Having a greater understanding of the genetic mutations which affect mitochondria can not only give us a much better understanding of how our bodies and cells work, evolution, and give us insight into methods for successful therapeutic tissue and organ cloning, but it can also lead us to better treatments and possibly even cures for many of the diseases that devastate many individuals and families.

    Mitochondrial genetics are the genetics of the DNA contained in mitochondria, eukaryotic cell organelles that generate adenosine triphosphate from pyruvic acid and are hence referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is not transmitted through nuclear DNA , and in most multicellular organisms, virtually all mitochondria are inherited from the mother's ovum.

    For those other readers not interested in techno talk about STRs and
    mutations I suggest moving on to the next list message at this point. You asked Then again, look at mtDNA. It lacks repair enzymes and duly has a two-order-of-magnitude higher net SNP mutation rate than Y DNA, but the STR mutation rate doesn't show the same enhancement. The poly-C "hotspot" insertions would have to occur with a 20% probability according to that scenario. Indeed, I noticed just today that HVR2 actually has two proper STRs: an ATA and a TTAA. These have only three repeats each, and so they wouldn't be very active, but they should at least be polymorphic if the rate were jacked up.

Furthermore, some coniferous families show paternal inheritance of mitochondria , and some organisms such as Cryptosporidium have mitochondria with no DNA whatsoever. Eighty percent of mitochondrial DNA codes for functional mitochondrial proteins, and therefore most mitochondrial DNA mutations lead to functional problems, which may be manifested as myopathies (muscle disorders).
