I ntroduction Welcome to the home page of the Palouse Mycological Association (PMA), the amateur mushroom club of Washington State University, the University of Idaho, and surrounding area. The Palouse Mycological Association is a relatively new club, formed in January, 1993 by Norma Copes who served as our president until 1995. The goal of our association is to provide opportunities for our members to gain a better understanding of mushrooms and related fungi through forays, presentations and fungal feasts. We have a dedicated and highly enthusiastic core of members and our numbers are growing each year. Our members include amateur and professional mycologists from the Pullman - Moscow area and the surrounding communities of the Palouse. Our scientific advisors are Dr. Lori Carris , associate professor at Washington State University and Dr. Edmund Tylutki, professor emeritus of the University of Idaho. Dr. Tylutki is the author of several books on regional fungi, including Volumes 1 and 2 of Mushrooms of Idaho and the Pacific Northwest

Welcome to my fungus web page! I hope you will enjoy learning something about lots of different kinds of mushrooms and other fungi.
April 1, 2008 - It 's been more than a year and a half since my heart transplant! For those of you who don't know, after having heart problems for several years, on May 22, 2006, I was fortunate enough to receive a new heart at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester!!! I am doing quite well. Thanks for all of your support. I really appreciate it. You can read more at my health update page. (There's a new update [and a picture of me] Nov 21, 2007). Even though I may never know who they are, I am very grateful to the person and the family who donated their heart to me. You can click on the ribbon to the right to find out how to become an organ donor in your state. Please sign up and potentially share your life with others. Thanks! The fungus of the month for April is Profollias downhoki , a recently discovered organism that is the missing link between fungi and plants! We need your help! We are doing some experiments with the black tulip fungus

The fungi shown on these pages may be found in the forests of central and coastal North Carolina. The photos and collections were made during the fall of 1995 as part of a class assignment for Introductory Mycology (Bot 220, taught by R. Vilgalys) at Duke University. Students were required to prepare a collection of 50 specimens representing a cross section of mushroom diversity from North Carolina, with notes and photos. The best student photos were selected for this homepage. Many of the specimens shown on these photos were collected during field trips to several interesting habitats in North Carolina, including the piedmont, sandhills, and coastal forest regions.

W elcome to the web page of the Julian H. Miller Mycological Herbarium. The goal of this web page is to make available to the citizens of Georgia information on fungi and the ways in which they affect our daily lives. You will see examples of how fungi have been used in art and on many everyday objects, as well as illustrations of Georgia fungi. You will also find information on the herbarium, a short history of mycological research at the University of Georgia, and a list of journals and reprints available for distribution. Additional features are planned for the future, so please check back often to see what is new. We hope you find your visit interesting and informative, and we welcome your comments and suggestions.

Fungal Mold Mycology is a field of scientific inquiry in the life sciences that studies microscopic forms in the FUNGI kingdom. Fungi are not plants or animals, have no legs, wings or any superior intellect but are very intersting and relevant to human health. WHAT IS SO INTERESTING ABOUT FUNGI? A medical mycologist molecular biologist will tell you that in the study of fungi they reveal themselves as far more interesting than humans due to the various morphologies within the same species of many genera - where else do you find dimorphs, telemorphs and anamorphs so dramatically in life? Did you know some fungi actually have locomotion abilities? Like animals they actually move on their own with a purpose upon their prey!

Center for Medical Mycology (CMM) is a unique institutional resource for the study of fungal diseases from the test tube to the patient, which serves as a mycology reference center providing services to clinicians and the pharmaceutical industry. We also perform molecular level research on areas including fungal pathogenesis, virulence and formation of fungal biofilm, as well as clinically relevant studies in fungal biology. The faculty and staff at the Center possess high ethical standards and are committed to being effective, responsible and accountable.
Our Mission
Overview
Research at the CMM is devoted to the following main areas:
  • A basic science area focusing on the biology of fungal biofilms , determination of virulence factors responsible for the pathogenesis of fungi including dermatophytes Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans , and A pre-clinical laboratory area concentrating on development of reference method for antifungal susceptibility testing An in vivo animal center Studies of mechanism of action of different antifungal agents.

    Description
Field Mycology is devoted to the identification and study of wild fungi in Britain and Europe. It is designed to aid readers' identification skills with user-friendly keys, many colour illustrations, and tips on where and how to look for interesting and less commonly recorded species. It guides readers through the techniques required for identifying fungi in the field and under the microscope, provides reviews and guides to literature, and brings readers up-to-date with local and national recording and conservation schemes. All of this, plus the latest mycological news and events from Britain and around the world is presented. Field Mycology is edited by a panel of expert British mycologists and conservationists.

    General Concepts of Mycology
    Michael R. McGinnis
    Stephen K. Tyring
    General Concepts
Fungi are eukaryotic microorganisms which are heterotrophic and essentially aerobic with limited anaerobic capabilities. Fungi synthesize lysine by the L-aadipic acid biosynthetic pathway. They possess chitinous cell walls, plasma membranes containing ergosterol, 80SrRNA and microtubules composed of tubulin. Fungi grow as yeasts, molds or a combination of both (i.e. dimorphism).
    Clinical Presentation
Fungal infections can present clinically in three general manners. Cutaneous presentations can include dermatophyte infections as well as more superficial manifestations seen in pityriasis versicolor. Subcutaneous infections, such as sporotrichosis, often result from traumatic inoculation of the responsible organism into the skin. Systemic mycoses usually follow inhalation and are subsequent to primary pulmonary infections. Alternatively, systemic fungal infections can occur in immunocompromised hosts from normal flora. For example, Candida albicans is frequently seen as part of normal vaginal flora but can produce systemic disease in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or in AIDS patients. In addition, fungi can indirectly produce disease by eliciting an immune response in the host.

USDA-ARS Collection of Entompathogenic Fungal Cultures (ARSEF) The ARSEF culture collection is the world's largest and most diverse collection of cultures for fungal pathogens of insects, mites, spiders, nematodes, and other invertebrates. This collection is an internationally recognized research resource providing clients around the world with cultures, identifications, and information on entomopathogenic fungi.
The collection currently comprises nearly 6000 isolates from more than 400 fungal taxa and ca. 930 diverse hosts, with isolates coming from every continent of the globe. ARSEF accessions of many taxa represent the only cultures of these fungi available anywhere. Such commonly encountered entomopathogens such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae are each represented by nearly 1000 accessions from extremely varied hosts and locations. No other culture collection offers either such diversity or depth of holdings as does the ARSEF collection.
