The Mariana Trench - Oceanography
What is a Trench? At least 22 trenches have been identified although not all are classified as major.
Of this number, 18 are in the Pacific Ocean, three in the Atlantic Ocean, and one in the Indian Ocean. Where, and What is the Mariana Trench? The Mariana Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of the 14 Mariana Islands (11"21' North latitude and 142" 12' East longitude ) near Japan. As you probably already know, it is the deepest part of the earth's oceans, and the deepest location of the earth itself. It was created by ocean-to-ocean subduction, a phenomena in which a plate topped by oceanic crust is subducted beneath another plate topped by oceanic crust.
But just how deep is the Mariana Trench?
First off, here are the average depths of the earth's oceans; the Arctic Ocean is 1,038 meters (3,407 feet) deep, the Indian Ocean is 3,872 meters (12,740 feet) deep, the Atlantic Ocean is 3,872 meters (12,254 feet) deep and the Pacific Ocean is 4,188 meters (13,740 feet) deep.
The deepest point in each of the earth's oceans are as follows; the Arctic Ocean's Eurasian Basin at 5,450 meters (17,881 feet) deep, the Indian Ocean's Java Trench at 7,725 meters (25,344 feet) deep, the Atlantic Ocean's Puerto Rico Trench at 8,648 meters (28,374 feet) deep and the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench at 11,033 meters (36,201 feet) deep.

Carolina Coastal Science is an innovative, inquiry-based, science resource that utilizes the interactive technologies of the World Wide Web to explore science in coastal Carolina. Carolina Coastal Science has been created based on the goals stated in the National Science Education Standards. While this web site has been designed specifically for an Environmental Science component of a primary and secondary science curricula, it may be used in different curriculum areas. Teachers and students can use this web site independently or as a class using a number of different teaching strategies including open-ended inquiries, guided inquiries, independent research, and cooperative group learning. Carolina Coastal Science contains an interactive photojournal that students can use to construct their own set of inquiry questions to explore; an inquiry simulation in which students investigate the issues concerning the fate of the Shell Island Resort and then debate the future of this and other oceanfront structures threatened by coastal erosion; a section of "Inquiry Images" which can be used as whole class guided inquiry activities; and a Coastal Research Technology section that students can use to identify the scientific instruments used by oceanographers and coastal geologists to collect data. An educators guide is provided with a variety of teaching suggestions to incorporate this site into primary and secondary school classrooms.

Herodotus map of world, modified from The Challenger Reports (summary), 1895 Aristotle modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds). " I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."

68. Learn About Oceanography--Girl Power! Science And Technology Section
Not long ago, oceanographers thought the deepest, darkest part of the ocean was a dead zone where nothing much happened. They were wrong.
http://www.girlpower.gov/girlarea/sciencetech/jobs/oceanography.htm
Oceanography
Mountains, volcanoes, hot water shooting out of chimneys, gold, silver, and weird creatures that eat chemicals and never see the light of day! Is this the latest video game or a science fiction movie? No, it's the deepest part of the ocean, a mysterious place where few people have gone. Not long ago, oceanographers thought the deepest, darkest part of the ocean was a dead zone where nothing much happened. They were wrong. There are thousands of miles of volcanic cracks around all of the continents. These cracks, called vents, push out molten lava, water, and warm chemicals from the inside of the earth. Tube worms, miniature lobsters, spider crabs, anemones, and mounds of bacteria live off the minerals that come from the vents. Tall chimneys build up as the blazing hot stuff hits the icy water. Why is this important? Understanding "deep volcanism" lets us know more about how the earth was formed and how life develops. The bacteria from the deep sea could be used to help in medicine and to clean the environment. Rock samples from the ocean floor help scientists understand what happened when a meteor hit the earth millions of years ago and give them new ideas about the Ice Age. The Real Deal What do oceanographers do? They make maps of the ocean floor, study the life and death of coral reefs, and keep track of ocean currents. Oceanographers work at sea, in floating laboratories, on land, and along the coast to collect information about the temperature and chemistry of the water, undersea land formations, and what it all means for weather, wildlife, and the environment. Oceanographers sometimes go underwater. They use a submarine to look for deep sea vents and chimneys 1½ miles below the ocean's surface.

You will read ABC books, especially The Ocean Alphabet Book and Swimming Through the Alphabet . While reading these books, look at the author's style of writing, the format of the book, and the illustrations. Research the ocean with a group of friends and pick a topic for your book. Your challenge is to create an ABC book that includes items from your chosen oceanography topic using all of the letters of the alphabet. Try to come up with an original idea and format. This is your chance to be an author and illustrator of a children's book. The Task Your task is to create an ABC book about the ocean for children your age.
