25. Fiber Optic Cable Tutorial
In recent years it has become apparent that fiberoptics are steadily replacing copper wire as an appropriate means of communication signal transmission.
http://www.arcelect.com/fibercable.htm
FIBER OPTICS THE BASICS OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE a Tutorial
BRIEF OVER VIEW OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE ADVANTAGES OVER COPPER:
SPEED: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds - up into the gigabits
BANDWIDTH: large carrying capacity
DISTANCE: Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be "refreshed" or strengthened.
RESISTANCE: Greater resistance to electromagnetic noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables.
MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs much less to maintain.
In recent years it has become apparent that fiber-optics are steadily replacing copper wire as an appropriate means of communication signal transmission. They span the long distances between local phone systems as well as providing the backbone for many network systems. Other system users include cable television services, university campuses, office buildings, industrial plants, and electric utility companies. A fiber-optic system is similar to the copper wire system that fiber-optics is replacing. The difference is that fiber-optics use light pulses to transmit information down fiber lines instead of using electronic pulses to transmit information down copper lines. Looking at the components in a fiber-optic chain will give a better understanding of how the system works in conjunction with wire based systems. At one end of the system is a transmitter. This is the place of origin for information coming on to fiber-optic lines. The transmitter accepts coded electronic pulse information coming from copper wire. It then processes and translates that information into equivalently coded light pulses. A light-emitting diode (LED) or an injection-laser diode (ILD) can be used for generating the light pulses. Using a lens, the light pulses are funneled into the fiber-optic medium where they transmit themselves down the line.

26. Light And Optics: Online Meteorology Guide
(WW2010) Introduces optical effects resulting from light interaction with air, dust haze particles ice crystals and water droplets.

Graphic by: Yiqi Shao Rainbows, sunsets and halos; a spectacular display of colors and visuals in the sky called "atmospheric optics". As sunlight (or moonlight) enters the atmosphere, it is either absorbed, reflected, scattered, refracted or diffracted by atmospheric particles or air molecules. These processes, individually or in combination, are responsible for producing most optical effects. This module investigates these particle-light interactions and the assortment of optical effects they produce. The Light and Optics module has been organized into the following sections: Sections
Last Update: 08/26/99 Mechanisms
Particle/Molecule-light interactions responsible for creating optical effects. These interactions include: reflection, scattering, refraction and diffraction. Air, Dust, Haze
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with air, dust and haze particles. These effects include: crepuscular rays, blue skies, blue haze and sunsets. Ice Crystals
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with ice crystals. These effects include: sundogs, sun pillars and halos. Water Droplets
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with water droplets. These effects include: cloud iridescence, rainbows and a silver lining along the edge of clouds.

Binoculars and Scopes
Birding Optics
Michael and Diane Porter are avid birdwatchers. They've been reviewing binoculars and spotting scopes since 1993. See their article on the "Ten Myths of Birding Optics" in the September, 2006 issue of Bird Watcher's Digest. They've surveyed hundreds of binoculars and scopes, testing them for optical qualities and noting the fit-and-feel characteristics of each instrument. In each survey, a team of Iowa birders helped by trying out the optics and contributing their considered opinions. Some of their articles and reviews are posted here.
SPOTTING SCOPES
Which Camera?
A reader writes: "I want to get into digiscoping. My problem is that I don't know which camera to get to go with a particular scope and digital camera adapter." Here are some suggestions. Backpackable Spotting Scope
New miniature scope from Nikon gives full-size images of great clarity and brightness. Birding Scopes: Angled or Straight (2005) lays out the advantages of angled scopes for birders.
