The Department of Ornithology and Mammalogy was established in 1853 with the creation of the California Academy of Sciences. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, which destroyed most of the original collections of birds and mammals, the department was reborn with the resurrection of the new Academy of Sciences. As a world renown repository for specimens and their accompanying information, the department's collections currently house over 107,000 specimens of birds and over 30,000 specimens of mammals. The department also houses a modern bioacoustics laboratory and an extensive sound library of over 4,000 recordings. Aside from maintaining these collections, department staff and associates are involved in various scientific studies, conservation efforts, and international research projects.
Over 120 countries are represented by specimens in the collections, but the strengths of the department are its extensive holdings of birds and mammals from western North America, as well as important collections from Mexico and Central America, the Galapagos Islands, the Solomon Islands, China, Myanmar, the Philippines, and eastern Africa.

This tutorial discusses the following topics: how NEXRAD WSR-88D radar works and how to interpret radar imagery; the appearance of non-biological phenomena; the appearance of biological phenomena; examples of bird migration; and related topics and radar ornithology bibliography. Welcome
In two centuries of American ornithology, The Birds of North America (BNA) is only the fourth comprehensive reference covering the life histories of North American birds. Following in the footsteps of Wilson, Audubon, and Bent, BNA makes a quantum leap in information beyond what these historic figures were able to provide. The print version of BNA was completed in 2002, a joint 10 year project of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Academy of Natural Sciences. Now as an online project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, BNA is poised to become a living resource. Account contents are updated frequently, with online-coordinated contributions from researchers, citizen scientists, and designated reviewers and editors. In addition, BNA Online contains image and video galleries showing behaviors, habitat, nests, eggs and nestlings, and more. And each online species account contains recordings of that bird's songs and calls, selected from the extensive collection in Cornell's Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds.

The Radar Ornithology Laboratory at Clemson University CUROL ) was established in 1990. The laboratory is devoted to the acquisition and analysis of radar data as it relates to bird movements in the atmosphere. Relating radar data, field observation, satellite imagery, and weather data, our laboratory has discovered important factors controlling temporal and spatial patterns of daily and seasonal movements of birds. Our use of the WSR-88D (NEXRAD - Weather Surveillance Radar 88D) network in the United States has allowed us to record large-scale migration events and relate these to topography and local and regional weather conditions. We also are using these data to develop continent-wide and regional migration maps and to build predictive models of migration for different regions of the United States. Some recent work at the Laboratory includes:
    • Calibrating WSR-88D displays for quantifying bird migration
