Is climate change something different from the hole in the ozone layer ? last update : december 2003 website of the author : www.manicore.com - contact the author : jean-marc@manicore.com I would not have supposed it that frequent when I started to investigate our "climatic future", but there is a very frequent confusion that is made between two important environment problems that happen "above our heads" : the enhancement of the greenhouse effect and the "hole in the ozone layer". This confusion even happens for some high-ranking members of the government or known journalists (I've got names !). These two phenomena have certainly characteristics in common, that explain this confusion. Here are - among others - some of them : climate change and ozone destruction in the high atmosphere are two phenomena that derive from human induced emissions of particular gases : greenhouse gases in the first case, CFC in the second, the latter, in order to increase the confusion, being also a greenhouse gas ! in both cases it refers to a global atmospheric process, meaning that the place where the gases are emitted is of no importance for the consequences, because the residence time of the gases in the air is long enough (decades or centuries in both cases) for the atmosphere to be well mixed shortly after the emissions happened (a matter of weeks to months)

Introduction Ozone Layer , layer of the chemical ozone present in the atmosphere protecting the Earth from ultraviolet radiation. II. Composition of the Ozone Layer Ozone is formed in the atmosphere when ultraviolet radiation from the Sun splits one oxygen molecule into two oxygen atoms (O ). The atomic oxygen then combines with another oxygen molecule to form ozone (O ). Most ozone found in the Earth’s atmosphere occurs in one layer in the stratosphere, between altitudes of around 20 to 50 km (12 to 30 mi). Early in the Earth’s history, the gradual build-up of this layer from oxygen released by marine life allowed life to develop on land. Today, the ozone layer helps to produce the observed vertical structure of the atmosphere, and absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation that would otherwise damage plant and animal life (also causing skin cancer) on the Earth’s surface. In contrast, ozone close to the Earth’s surface is a health hazard, as it is one of the major constituents of photochemical smog. III.

The layer of gaseous ozone (O ) in the stratosphere that protects life on earth by filtering out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. See stratosphere ultraviolet radiation . (source: EPA)
Background from Wikipedia
The ozone layer, or ozonosphere layer (rarely used term), is the part of the Earth's atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). "Relatively high" means a few parts per million - much higher than the concentrations in the lower atmosphere but still small compared to the main components of the atmosphere. The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations which continues to operate today. The "Dobson unit", a convenient measure of the total amount of ozone in a column overhead, is named in his honor. Asthma Inhalers Go CFC-Free, Australia
