This article is a very brief description of the subject.
It is not intended to give a full scientific explanation
Please see the "see also" or "references" sections for further explanation. The ozone layer is anywhere between 15 km and 35 km above the surface of the earth. The name is a slight misnomer as the percentage of ozone in the layer is only a few parts per million; however, over ninety percent of the free natural ozone in the atmosphere is found within this layer. It varies in thickness throughout the year and across the globe. The most notable effect of the ozone layer is to absorb most of the high frequency ultraviolet light from the sun. This light would be very harmful to most terrestrial life if it reached the earth's surface. Annual fluctuations occur naturally in the position, thickness and density of the layer. However, it has been affected by man-made chemicals transported into the stratosphere by air currents. Chlorofluorocarbons, which are inert and harmless in the lower atmosphere, and were used heavily for refrigeration and as propellants in aerosols, are long lasting pollutants that form radicals that catalyse the breakdown of ozone. As a result oif this, CFCs have been largely phased out of use.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 3 items Ozone Layer , a region of the atmosphere from 19 to 48 km (12 to 30 mi) above Earth's surface. Ozone concentrations of up to 10 parts per million occur in the ozone layer. The ozone forms there by the action of sunlight on oxygen. This action has been taking place for many millions of years, but naturally occurring nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere apparently have kept the ozone concentration at a fairly stable level. The ozone layer of the atmosphere protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. If all the ultraviolet radiation given off by the Sun were allowed to reach the surface of Earth, most of the life on Earth’s surface would probably be destroyed. Short wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation, such as UV-A, B, and C, are damaging to the cell structure of living organisms. Fortunately, the ozone layer absorbs almost all of the short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation and much of the long-wavelength ultraviolet radiation given off by the Sun.

Even the small concentrations of ozone present in the ozone layer are vital to life on most planets because of the particle's ability to block ultraviolet radiation , which can be harmful to biological life. The ozone layer of Earth suffered severe damage during the 20th century and by the 21st century had been nearly destroyed. The planet Aldea suffered damage to its ozone layer from the long-term use of its planetary defense system. The resulting radiation poisoning rendered the Aldeans sterile and threatened to destroy their civilization. In the Antarctic region the ozone levels in the stratosphere were discovered to have dropped to as low as 33% of their pre-1975 values. This reduction in the ozone levels was termed a ‘hole’ in the ozone layer. It occurs primarily during the Antarctic spring, from September to early December, during which time a strong westerly wind circulates around the continent and creates an ‘atmospheric container’ in which over 50% of the stratospheric ozone is destroyed.

Recently, however, a new study based on the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data found evidence that the Earth's ozone layer was getting mended. The study was based on 25 years of independent ozone observations at different altitudes in the Earth's stratosphere, which lies between 9.6 and 50 kilometers above the surface. The ozone level, it has been forecast, would be restored to the 1980 one by the middle of this century.
On the other hand it has also been predicted that the Antarctic ozone hole will reach sizes of 8-10 million square miles nearly every year until about 2018, which is larger than the North American continent. It is, however, certain that the ozone hole is still fragile and needs all our attention.
Environmental issues are of prime concern today. But whereas hazardous waste, Acid raid etc are more or less localized issues, ozone depletion stands to affect the whole world. In the absence of the ozone layer a hostile atmosphere would be created on the planet which would be harmful for humans, and lead to all kinds of skin cancer.

This page needs your help. Feel free to jump in, add content, edit or categorise it. See stub The Ozone layer is part of the stratosphere and is where 90% of the earth's ozone resides. The Ozone Layer begins between 6-10 miles (10-17 km) above the Earth and extends for about 30 miles (50km). Ozone molecules (O3) play a key role in absorbing damaging ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) from the sun. Man-made chemicals such as ChloroFluroCarbons (CFCs) and certain bromides are known to react with the ozone in the stratosphere causing a thining of the ozone layer. The thining is so extreme in Anatartica (up to 60%) that it creates a 'hole' in the ozone layer allowing most of the harmful UV-B rays from the sun to reach the Earth. These high levels of UV-B radiation can be easily felt by anyone in Austrlia or New Zealand and are responsible to some extent for the very high cancer rates in these countries. Moreover, a similiar process is at work over the Artic with a small 'hole' being detectable near Europe.
