Activity 2. The Changing Ozone Layer
In this activity students will explore the nature of the ozone layer that protects the surface of the earth from ultraviolet radiation of the sun. They will find out how ozone is produced in the upper atmosphere, and what appears to be causing the deterioration of the earth's protective layer. Students will discuss the ways of curbing this trend, and in the extensions, explore a way to detect total column ozone levels. Objectives
  • Explain how ozone is destroyed by CFCs in the stratosphere. Identify ways of curbing the deterioration of ozone. Discuss ways of detecting and measuring ozone (total column).
Materials spray can, set of Styrofoam spheres to make molecular models (or a variety of colors of clay), light meter, UV detector Procedure 1. Begin the lesson by showing a spray can product, and spraying a small amount into the air. Then say: "Some of the chemicals in spray cans can effect the ozone layer. How can this be? "Give students a few minutes in their groups to discuss what they know about this statement, and what might be creating the problem.

Ozone layer: Encyclopedia II - Ozone - Ozone layer See main article: Ozone layer. The highest levels of ozone in the atmosphere are in the stratosphere, in a region also known as the ozone layer. Here it filters out the shorter wavelengths (less than 320 nm) of ultraviolet light (270 to 400 nm) from the Sun that would be harmful to most forms of life in large doses. These same wavelengths are also responsible for the production of vitamin D, which is essential for human health. The standard way to express total ozone amounts in the atmosphere is by using Dobson units. Ozone used in industry is measured in ppm (OSHA exposure limits for exa ...

It also varies with season, being in general thicker during the spring and thinner during the autumn. The reasons for this latitude and seasonal dependence are complicated, involving atmospheric circulation patterns as well as solar intensity. Ozone layer - Di ...

Ozone Layer
What is the ozone layer and what is its significance? Most of us have already heard of the terms ‘ozone layer’ but do not really know or understand what it is. In simplest terms, the ozone layer is a layer of gas in the earth’s atmosphere with relatively high concentrations of ozone gas. Although ozone gas also occurs close to the ground where it is known as a pollutant, 90 percent of ozone is found in the ozone layer. This layer of gas, found approximately 20-50 kilometres from the earth’s surface, was discovered by French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson back in 1913. The ozone layer plays a very important role in the existence of all life on earth - it filters out almost all of the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun and blocks out the hazardous radiation from reaching the earth’s surface. The amount and concentration of ozone in any given area of the stratosphere differs according to various factors including weather, temperature, latitude and altitude. However, it was discovered that harmful aerosols and other particles have a significant impact on the level of ozone present in the atmosphere.
In 1985, a thinning area of the ozone layer was discovered above Antarctica. This eventually progressed into an ozone hole. The discovery sparked worldwide concern over the depletion of the ozone layer especially since it was discovered that the main culprits for the deterioration of the layer are human-produced chemicals and ozone depleting substances (ODS) such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) liberally used in refrigerants and aerosol propellants.

The Ozone Layer What is the Ozone Layer? Ozone is a naturally occurring gas found in the atmosphere where it absorbs most of the sun's ultraviolet light - invisible rays which are harmful to both plant and animal life. Ozone is found throughout the atmosphere including ground level, but is mostly found in a band called the ozone layer at about 15 - 40km above the Earth's surface. The ozone layer is essential for life - until it was formed, about a billion years ago, the only life on Earth was at the bottom of the ocean. At lower levels in the atmosphere ozone acts as a greenhouse gas helping trap heat and so contributes to global warming.
Destruction of the Ozone Layer - The Causes
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been identified as the main cause of the destruction to the ozone layer, but also compounds containing bromine, other halogen compounds and also nitrogen oxides. CFCs are found in refrigerators, air conditioning packaging and propellants. They were discovered by Thomas Midgeley in 1930 as a cheap, safe coolant for refrigerators. CFCs are very stable, they decay slowly and so endure in the atmosphere for up to a century.
