Research Program Summary Studies of fossil and living land plants are directed toward a fuller understanding of phylogeny and evolution. These are explored using data from morphological, anatomical, ultrastructural, and developmental characters. Evaluations of ontogeny, reproductive biology, and organismal interactions are emphasized in interpreting development of the modern flora within the context of evolutionary ecology. Plant Fossil Record
Summary: "This Version 2.2 of the Plant Fossil Record (PFR2.2) database includes descriptions and occurrences of many thousands of extinct plants. For the first time modern genera with fossil species are included in the desription database. Names, places and ages can be searched and the occurrences are instantly plotted on a global map. Patterns of migration and evolution through geological time can be clearly examined to help better understand the history of climatic and environmental change." "The biological, geological and geographical aspects of [the Plant Fossil Record] ... data have been obtained directly from the scientific literature or from museum collections. Please understand that the records have not been checked as "correct" identifications, locations or age determinations, and are as they were published. ...[T]he user, must take responsibility to justify their reliability." "The data was kindly provided by the following individuals: D. Mai, Berlin; J. Kvacek, Prague; E. Wheeler, North Carolina; J. Eder-Kovar, Vienna; R. Ravn, Alaska; L. Budantsev and O. Lavrenko, Saint Petersburg; L. Fotyanova, Moscow; S. Brown and H. Fisher, London."

History of the Paleobotanical Section of BSA
"The Paleobotanical Section of Botanical Society of America is the oldest organization of Paleobotanists in the world. The founding father of the Section in the years of 1934-1936 was Loren C. Perry, then of Cornell University. Paleobotanical contributions at the Botanical Society of America's meetings had customarily been presented before the General Section. Professor Perry initiated discussions of forming a formal organization of the Paleobotany Section. The idea was enhanced by the visit to the U.S.A. of Dr. H. Hamshaw Thomas during the Pittsburgh meeting of the Botanical Society. The Botanical Society Council minutes for the 30th Annual Meeting, at Washington University, St. Louis, December 31, 1935 - January 2, 1936, include an item: 'The Secretary reported a movement on the part of several of the younger members interested in paleobotany to ask for the formation of a paleobotanical section. The Council informally expressed its hearty approval of such action.' The minutes for the corresponding meeting at Atlantic City, December 29-31, 1936, include an item:'The Secretary reported plans for the organization of a Paleobotanical Section of the Society. The Council voted its approval of the proposal to organize such a Section.'

The International Organisation of Palaeobotany promotes international co-operation in the study of palaeobotany including palaeo-palynology. This is achieved through the publication of an informative newsletter and organisation of international conferences focussing on all aspects of palaeobotany. Organisational activities also include collaboration with numerous other international bodies to ensure the continued scientific development of palaeobotany and its further integration within related fields.

Sir J. William Dawson
The first Canadian-born scientist of worldwide reputation was Sir John William Dawson, born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1820. As a boy, he developed an incurable interest in geology and was an avid collector of local fossils. In Dawson's day, schoolboys often found fossil leaves while gathering shale to make slate pencils. Dawson recorded his discoveries and exchanged fossils with other geologists from the Pictou and Joggins areas, adding to his already overflowing collection. He attended the University of Edinburgh to study geology in 1840, but was forced to leave after only one year due to financial problems. The next few years of his life were spent working for mining companies and doing field work which was published through the Geological Society of London. When the famous geologist Charles Lyell visited coal deposits in Pictou, Dawson acted as his guide. In 1851, Dawson and Lyell teamed up again to examine the interiors of fossil tree trunks at Joggins , Nova Scotia. They discovered the remains of some of the earliest known reptiles

Description
The Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology is an international journal for articles in all fields of palaeobotany and palynology dealing with all groups, ranging from marine palynomorphs to higher land plants. Original contributions and comprehensive review papers should appeal to an international audience. Typical topics include but are not restricted to systematics, evolution, palaeobiology, palaeoecology, biostratigraphy, biochronology, palaeoclimatology, paleogeography, taphonomy, palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, vegetation history, and practical applications of palaeobotany and palynology, e.g. in coal and petroleum geology and archaeology. The journal especially encourages the publication of articles in which palaeobotany and palynology are applied for solving fundamental geological and biological problems as well as innovative and interdisciplinary approaches.

Dr. Diane Erwin (left), Collections Manager of Fossil Plants at the University California Museum of Paleontology, and Cathy Zyskowski collect fossil leaves from Middle Eocene (roughly 48 million years old) "chocolate shales" at the Sailor Flat Hydraulic Mine in Nevada County, California, several miles east of Grass Valley/Nevada City; all significant fossil specimens went to the archival paleobotanical collections at the University California Museum of Paleontology. The fossil locality presently lies on private property. Permission to collect here was kindly granted by the owners of the Sailor Flat Hydraulic Mine. Come on along with the FarWest Geoscience Foundation for a day of paleobotanical discovery In the Sierra Nevada foothills, Nevada County, California.
