Geology / Maps
The position of land masses as long ago as four hundred million years ago was totally different to that of today. With the motion and collision of the plates that make up the earth's crust the location and climate of familiar 'hot' or 'cold' places bears little relation to the present. In the North Atlantic area the Silurian marked the closure of the great 'Iapetus' Ocean that separated present-day North America from Northern Europe. At that time, even though the boundary of the Eastern edge of North America was more or less in the same position as today, Newfoundland and a portion of Eastmost America was on the South of the ocean together with England and Ireland. Northern Ireland and Scotland were on the Northern flank. The end of the Silurian saw the formation of massive mountain ranges along the edges of the two continental margins, and in England, a move to deposition of sediments derived from the new mountains. This created the Devonian system. The deposition of Silurian rocks was widespread worldwide.

NGU Rapport 2007.057
Forfatter: T. Redfield, S.J.H. Buiter and M.A. Smethurst Utgivelses¥r: 2007 Last ned pdf Prof. Dr. Trond Helge Torsvik was born on October 12, 1957. He attended the Norwegian Naval Academy before taking degrees from the University of Bergen in 1982 and 1985. In 1991, after a post-doctoral position at Oxford, Trond joined the Geological Survey of Norway in Trondheim, where he continues working today. Since then, he has also held appointments at the University of Bergen, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the University of Witwatersrand, and the University of Oslo. Trond is an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Norway, the Norwegian Academy of Science, the Academia Europea, and the American Geophysical Union. Trond has made significant contributions in (among other sciences) paleomagnetism, paleogeography, plate tectonics, and mantle dynamics. His field areas have spanned the world's continents, and probed the Core Mantle Boundary. His list of collaborators is impressively international. Although his published contributions are legion, Trond is also well known for his paleomagnetic and plate reconstruction software, which he has consistently made available to the scientific community.

Abstract
Tuvaella Fauna). South China has varied faunal links but seems best treated as at the edge of the peri-Gondwanan collage for most of the period. We show how faunas document the early Ordovician rift of Avalonia from West Gondwana and its movement and subsequent collisions, first with Baltica in the end Ordovician and then with Laurentia in the early Silurian. Faunas also support the postulated movement of the Precordillera of South America from Laurentia in the early Ordovician to intermediate- to high-latitude Gondwana in the Silurian. We examine peripheral terranes bordering Iapetus to demonstrate their pre-collision positions. Analysis of some of the many terranes now forming Kazakhstan and adjacent areas in central Asia today reveals that the benthic faunas there have more affinity with Gondwanan and peri-Gondwanan faunas than with Baltica or Siberia, and thereby challenge structural models postulating an Early Palaeozoic Kipchak arc.

Paleogeography
(or, what the continents looked like a long time ago) Below are links to Powerpoint shows made from really stunning maps produced by Dr. Ron Blakey, at Northern Arizona University. By clicking through the slides, you can see how the continents moved and formed in the distant past (the Fade Slow slide transition is important for the effect). Dr. Blakey's website with all the individual images and much more is here . Many thanks to Dr. Blakey for the use of the images. North America Paleogeography (6.1 MB Powerpoint Show file)

Southwest U.S. Paleogeography
(4.6 MB Powerpoint Show file)
This shows the (speculative) development of the southwest U.S. starting about 1.7 million years ago. You can watch island arcs "crash" into the ancient continent, and the coming and going of the inland seas that were the basis of much of the sedimentary rock in that area. The current location Grand Canyon is denoted by a yellow circle, and helps illustrate why the Canyon has such an abundance of different strata, being often on the margins of those seas. As originally compiled by Stephen X. Arthur in 1999
(revisions 2000 not posted) COMMON FIRST PART OF FILMS 1-4: PALEOZOIC NORTH AMERICA: NOTE: The cratonic deposition sequences of Sloss (revised) and the Vail curves for eustatic sea-level fluctuations are basis for animation of coastlines and shallow sea transgressions. They provide both large scale flooding periods as well as secondary "heart-beat" pulses and even some faster flutter of coastlines. These will be combined at all stages with specific outlines as delineated in several sources from interpretation of local stratigraphy, which include the additional local effects of downwarped foreland basins inland from orogenic zones, etc. The many inbetween stages of inland seas are only hinted at here (see various paleomaps). The West is a Cordilleran Seaway throughout this period. Many subsiding basins are filling with sediment shed from various eroding uplifts throughout this period (for example Ozark dome into Illinois Basin). These features and processes are identified but are not specified in the minimal outline below. CAMBRIAN/ORDOVICIAN

    The Paleogeographic Method
The study of paleogeography has two principle goals. The first goal is to map the past positions of the continents. The second goal is to illustrate the changing distribution of mountains, lowlands, shallow seas, and deep ocean basins through time. Mapping the Past Positions of the Continents The past positions of the continents can be determined using the following five lines of evidence: paleomagnetism, linear magnetic anomalies, paleobiogeography, paleoclimatology, and geologic history.
Paleomagnetism. By measuring the remanent magnetic field often preserved in iron-bearing rock formations, paleomagnetic analysis can determine whether a rock was magnetized near the Pole or near the Equator. Paleomagnetism provides direct evidence of a continent's N-S (latitudinal) position, but does not constrain its E-W (longitudinal) position.
Linear Magnetic Anomalies. The Earth's magnetic field has another important property. Like the Sun's magnetic field, the Earth's magnetic field "flips" or reverses polarity. Fluctuations, or "anomalies", in the intensity of the magnetic field, occur at the boundaries between normally magnetized sea floor, and sea floor magnetized in the "reverse" direction. The age of these linear magnetic anomalies can be determined using fossil evidence and radiometric age determinations. Because these magnetic anomalies form at the mid-ocean ridges, they tend to be long, linear features (hence the name "linear magnetic anomalies") that are symmetrically disposed about the ridges axes. The past positions of the continents during the last 150 million years can be directly reconstructed by superimposing linear magnetic anomalies of the same age.
