Short news: Navideo, SketchUp components, paleogeography
Tuesday, October 17, 2006 (10:11 UTC)
  • Navideo is software for GPS enabled PocketPC that claims to perform some nifty tricks. You can track other Navideo users in real time, be tracked in turn, or send your position to others via sms/email. Navideo Controller for PC can keep track of multiple clients (using Google Earth), and send them new destinations. I'm sure it's intended for car fleets, but just think of the real-life games you could build on top of this system...:-) ( Via coolsmartphone Simplified Building Concepts is starting up a free SketchUp Library specializing in components and objects to place inside larger projects. You can also upload your own content. It's in beta, but it looks good. Valery Hronusov takes Geology professor Ron Blakey's renditions of global plate tectonics stretching back 600 million years and wraps them around Google Earth , adding time stamps. His task is made much easier by using EditGrid thus . If you're wondering whether Google Earth's timeline supports events 600 million years ago, the answer is No. Valery had to cheat:-).
But one serious question: Is it really at all possible to know where mountain ranges were on these continents half a billion years ago, or are those drawn with a huge dollop of paleopoetic license?

Morphology and paleogeography of the Ordovician conodont Paracordylodus gracilis Lindstrom, 1955: Comparison of two populations
Journal of Paleontology Nov 2000 by Tolmacheva, Tatiana Lofgren, Anita
ABsTRACT-Populations of the widely distributed Early Ordovician conodont Paracordylodus gracilis Lindstrom, 1955, have been measured and studied in detail. Natural clusters and rich collections of isolated elements allowed calculations of size frequency distributions and construction of survivorship curves. Small morphological differences, as well as dissimilarities in population structure between collections from separate areas, were observed. This led to the recognition of Type A populations from Kazakhstan and other Arenigian warm water, low latitude regions and Type B populations from Baltica and other areas with cool water, mainly located at high latitudes in the Arenigian.

PALEOGEOGRAPHY OF THE ARDENNES AREA (from Ziegler 1990) The Iapetus Ocean between the continental landmasses of Laurentia and Baltica closed during the Silurian, resulting in an enormous landmass sutured along the newly formed Caledonian fold belt that nowadays occupies large parts of Skandinavia and Scotland. This landmass, strongly weathered under tropical conditions, has been given the name Old Red Continent LEGEND

The images presented here show the paleogeography of the SW US
from 1.8 billion years ago to 10 million years ago. When played
in order, the paleogeographic evolution of the region
unfolds. Emphasis is on the Mesozoic where two or more images of
each period are shown. Two different interpretations are
presented for some of the periods. One shows a tectonic interpretation in which most elements of the western US were derived from North America; the second shows a tectonic interpretation in which some elements originated far from North America (exotic elements). Debate continues concerning these two different tectonic models.
