Particle physics
Particle physics , also called high energy physics , is a branch of physics which studies the elementary constituents of matter , and the interactions between them. Strictly speaking, the term particle is something of a misnomer. The objects studied by particle physics obey the principles of quantum mechanics . As such, they exhibit wave-particle duality , displaying particle-like behavior under certain experimental conditions and wave -like behavior in others. Theoretically, they are described neither as waves nor as particles, but as state vectors in an abstract Hilbert space . For a more detailed explanation, see quantum field theory . Following the convention of particle physicists, we will use "elementary particles" to refer to objects such as electrons and photons , with the understanding that these "particles" display wave-like properties as well. Modern particle physics research is focused on particles smaller than atoms . These include atomic constituents such as electrons protons , and neutrons (protons and neutrons are actually composite particles, made up of

[Your user agent does not support frames or is currently configured not to display frames. However, you may visit the related document. Flavor is a property of a fermion that identifies it, a label that specifies the name of the particle. In the Standard Model quarks are said to be present in six flavors ( up down charm strange top and bottom , often abbreviated by their initial letter as u b c s t and b ), and leptons are said to be present in other six flavors ( electron muon tau electron neutrino muon neutrino and tau neutrino , often abbreviated as e e and A fermion of a given flavor is an eigenstate of the weak interaction , that is, it will interact in a definite way with the bosons W W and Z . On the other hand, a fermion of a fixed mass (an eigenstate of the hamiltonian ) is normally a superposition of various flavors, and this gives rise to processes that change the flavor. In the case of quarks, it is reflected in the so-called CKM matrix , and the equivalent for neutrinos is the MNS matrix

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorimeter_(particle_physics)A calorimeter will only measure the kinetic energy of a particle, not the total energy.
Pete pervect One can also determine rest energy via calorimetry if one looks at particle /antiparticle annhiliation.
This may not be the most precise way of determining rest energy, though.
Also, I took the question to be more in terms of measuring the energy of a single particle, i.e. the particle physics version of the calorimeter. The original principle was based on measuring the actual heat energy, but they have since then become more sophisticated and complicated. Some of the more sophisticated versions routinely take into account known rest masses, i.e. they identify that a muon was created, and add in the known energy to do that into the particle energy.

Particle Physics
CCLRC Instrumentation Department works in close partnership with the UK academic community to build instrumentation systems for Particle Physics that employ the latest technology in radiation detectors and microelectronic engineering. The microelectronic systems include high-density, low noise, radiation-hard front end ASICs; high-performance readout systems for handling Tera-Bytes of data per second; and high-speed massively parallel processors for data analysis. Projects are taken from the initial development of the specification, design, manufacture and test through to the installation and long-term maintenance and support for the life of the experiment. Major projects currently in design and development include the readout system for Atlas Semiconductor tracker, the Atlas Calorimeter first-level trigger, readout for the CMS end-cap calorimeter and the CMS tracker, trigger for the BaBar Electromagnetic Calorimeter and readout for the MINOS neutrino experiment.

edit Particle physics
In an attempt to explain the decay and to understand internal structure of the neutron a new branch of physics was born, the particle physics . The only way to explore the structure of sub-atomic particles is to strike them with other particles in order to knock out their constituent parts. The simple logic says: The more powerful the impact, the smaller parts can be knocked out. At the beginning the only source of energetic particles to strike other particles were the cosmic rays. Earth is constantly bombarded by all sort of particles coming from the outer space. Atmosphere protects us from most of them, but many still reach the ground.
edit Antiparticles
In 1932, studying the cosmic rays with a bubble chamber, Carl Anderson made a photograph of two symmetrical tracks of charged particles. The measurements of the track curvatures showed that one track belonged to an electron and the other was made by a particle having the same mass and equal but positive charge. These particles were created when a cosmic
