Home-Scale Permaculture by Toby Hemenway Chelsea Green, 2001, with a foreword by John Todd The Origins of Peak Oil Doomerism People in the Peak Oil movement chafe at the label of doomer, but many of us do have an apocalyptic bent. Although plenty of Peak Oil commentary is sober analysis, a survey of the major websites and books quickly brings up apocalyptic titles like dieoff.org, oilcrash.com, The Death of the Oil Economy, The End of Suburbia, and The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight. Peak Oil writings are sprinkled with predictions that billions will die, civil order will collapse, and even that civilization will end. Why are we so enamored with the idea of doom? . . . Whole Systems Design Of all the various incarnations of ecological design, sustainable living, holistic systems management, and related big-picture ideas for living on a small planet, the one that grabs me is permaculture. None of the other schemes seem so complete, self-contained, and naturally integrated. That may be because permaculture design combines a set of coherent and interlinked principles, an energy- and resource-conserving attention to relative placement of elements, and, unlike most other design systems, a set of ethical guidelines. It is also amply broad-reaching to appeal to a restless generalist like me.

We are an informal group interested in learning and promoting permaculture in the Portland, Oregon area. Permaculture is a system of conscious, sustainable, ecological design. See the glossary for more information. We hold free monthly educational meetings that are open to everyone the 3rd Monday of each month We form partnerships with other organizations to promote sustainability education and implementation in our region, and welcome inquiries from any group with similar goals. We are also interested in creating permaculture demonstration sites in the Portland area. If you know of a good potential site, we would be happy to discuss it with you! An ideal site would have wide public access and a volunteer support base. What is permaculture? Permaculture is a system of ecological design. It is the only design system which incorporates ethics as an integral part of the design process. The ethics of permaculture are Care for the Earth, Care for People, and Share your Surplus. By designing within these guidelines, we can all help to nurture and even regenerate our small portion of the planet. One of the important tenets of pc (permaculture) philosophy is that of providing for as many of your own needs as possible. Few of us can manage to grow all the food we eat, but all of us are able to contribute to our own diet in some way. This makes gardening a prominent (and popular) feature in pc design, and there are many principles and techniques utilized in our gardens. However, there are many more aspects of pc that do not relate to gardening that anyone can do, anywhere. We invite you to explore them with us at our various events - and feel free to ask questions!

Jill Bolte Taylor: My stroke of insight
From left: Al Gore at TED2006; Jane Goodall at TED2003 Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.
Watch this stirring and potent presentation by Jill at the TED talks:
http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/229

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes). This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free . Almost 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

Lesson Four
What are some principles of permaculture?
In this lesson you will learn:
  • What a permaculture principle is Seven principles of permaculture
Permaculture principles
Permaculture principles are derived from observing nature. They are things we see happening in natural ecosystems that we want to copy. We observe nature and try to mimic what it does. The principles can be viewed as guidelines to follow when we apply permaculture. Permaculture practitioners have identified many principles, but we are going to focus on seven basic principles which will give you an understanding of the function and importance of permaculture principles.
Seven principles of permaculture
  • Conservation - Use only what is needed.
  • For example, a family uses a hand pump, pictured right, for water on their homestead. The hand pump encourages them to conserve water and makes them very conscious of how much they are using so they only use what they actually need. Another example of conserving water is showering instead of taking a bath.
  • Stacking functions - In permaculture we speak about getting many yields (outputs) from one element (thing) in your system.

Permaculture Across Borders commits to tapping into local knowledge and experience; to connecting people to resources; to training teachers and leaders of regenerative development in their communities; to giving individuals and communities a place to share their knowledge; and to listen to and learn from that shared knowledge. Goals
    • To build permaculture demonstration and teaching sites in partnership with local communities To provide internship and teaching opportunities for PDC graduates To connect financial and technical resources to communities To connect sister cities and regions so that experiences can be shared and to learn from those shared experiences
History Permaculture Across Borders evolved from teacher-student discussions at Permaculture Design Certificate courses around the world. A foundation was envisioned that would build upon local knowledge by supporting community-based demonstration and education sites, and that would connect communities, cities and regions to each other to create a shared knowledge database . Join our Community We invite you to participate in our forum, to offer or apply for internships and training, and to let us know of projects that could become valuable learning tools.

not against her. Our Work Our Services Our Process Our Philosophy ... Contact Santa Fe Permaculture is a landscape consultation and design company started in 1992. The scope of our work includes a wide variety of landscaping services ranging from fine stonework to beautiful plantings, from edible gardens to erosion control, from water harvesting to xeriscape and from intimate, partially-fenced magic spots to elegant and elaborate walled-in patios with outdoor fireplaces. By using the principles of permaculture in everything we do, we create efficient and productive outdoor living spaces that increase both your quality of life and your property value. As a company with a conscience, here in the high desert of Santa Fe, New Mexico, we take water very seriously. From active water harvesting systems like underground cisterns that pump water through drip irrigation to passive systems like pumice wicks, gabions, on-contour swales, sheet mulch and gray water, we apply the gamut of rainwater collection and conservation techniques. A natural, organic style of flagstone masonry creates great curb appeal as do terraces built with local moss rock. Experienced designers from our team know our native and drought tolerant plants and understand how colors, shapes and textures should harmonize aesthetically. In addition to providing our knowledge and creativity, we do our very best to listen to our client's needs and desires. So we can create sustainable oases out of difficult problems caused by the usual cast of characters here in the desert: drought, flood, wind, fire, mud, erosion, people, pets, and wildlife.

    "Permaculture"
“Permaculture is a way of living which promotes a harmonious
balance between all forms of life within the ecosystem.”
PERMACULTURE (permanent culture) is an approach to everyday life that integrates plants, animals, landscape, structures; people who purposely design all the facets of their lives to enhance environmental sustainability within a permanent, sustainable agricultural and cultural system - a diverse, complex eco-system, where the all of the elements interact in mutually beneficial ways to produce a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts.
Permanent is from the Latin "permanens" - to remain to the end, to persist throughout. Culture is from the Latin "cultura" - meaning the cultivation of land, or the intellect. It is a philosophy, an ethic of caring for the earth and working with, not against nature with an attitude of thoughtful observation, an action-meditation - rather than undirected and thoughtless labor.
A way of looking beyond a single-product system, and a means to leave the earth richer than we found it. Its aim is to create self-maintaining, efficient, and highly productive agricultural eco-systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural eco-systems.
