Reaching full capacity
Our poultry population continues to expand - the broody chook I brought home from work (which Bruce has christened 'Janet', after my boss) successfully hatched six eggs and we still have two of our own hens sitting on yet more eggs. I thought we were doing very well until I saw Rose's comment that she has 67 chicks - can't compete with that! Actually the domes are nearly at full capacity. The Permaculture Home Garden suggests a maximum of 12 birds per dome, and we've currently got:
  • 8 hens and 1 rooster in the main dome that's travelling round the mandalas 4 hens and 1 rooster in the smaller dome that sits next to Bruce's veggie patch by the septic tank, plus 13 chicks ranging in age from about 2 to 6 weeks 2 broody hens sitting on eggs in the A frame that we use as a maternity ward.
That makes 29 birds altogether, plus whatever hatches from the two broody hens, which is way too many. So, once the chicks get big enough, we'll eat any that are roosters, and keep the female ones to replace some of our older birds that aren't laying very well. We'll also do a rooster swap with our neighbours, to get some new blood into our flock, which is getting rather inbred.

Definition as written by paulgrow
The word "permaculture" was coined in 1978 by Bill Mollison, an Australian ecologist, and one of his students, David Holmgren. It is a contraction of "permanent agriculture" or "permanent culture."
Permaculture is about designing ecological human habitats and food production systems. It is a land use and community building movement which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate,

The Permaculture Guild of Houston Welcome to the online home of the Permaculture Guild of Houston. Urban Harvest is hosting our website so that we can provide to you information about permaculture in the greater Houston area. Provided here is information about our series of classes resulting in a design certification, directions to our classes, and links and resources so you can learn more about permaculture. The Permaculture Guild of Houston consists of Permaculture Design Certificate holders who meet on a regular basis. The Teaching Guild meets regularly to plan the scheduled classes and to work out class logistics and needs of the group as a whole. This may include ongoing or future projects and long-term goals for the Guild. The Quarterly Guild meets 4 times a year. The mission of the Quarterly Guild is to perpetuate the existence and the work of the Guild by supporting the teaching of Permaculture classes and community involvement of the Guild. The quarterly meetings are intended to be an active outlet for current members, new graduates and interested parties for networking, information sharing, continuing education and fellowship. The goal of continuing and perpetuating a Permaculture Guild is to support the classes and each other. Ultimately, all who graduate as Permaculture Designers will find it inherent in the training to spread your ideas to others by teaching, marketing Permaculture classes and ideas, practicing Permaculture design and living your life with a lighter ecological footprint.

    PERMACULTURE
Pemaculture is a method of gardening, and living, that looks to nature for guidance, emulating the patterns found in natural ecosystems. The word Permaculture is a combination of permanent and agriculture , and stresses the importance of low maintainance perennial crops, natural water catchment, and low energy inputs. Permaculture is, in many ways, acting out our commitment to Deep Ecology.

How do we acquire the skills we need to "indigenize" to the places we live? How do we bring into our communities the diversity of skills needed to have thriving local economies? How do we live in our towns and cities and not continue to damage ecosystems around us? And how do we become "

text more text One group of these individuals has developed a method of self-sustained living known as permaculture . Unlike many other methods of alternative agriculture, permaculture is not simply a method of food production. It is a complete lifestyle with its own overarching set of beliefs that can be applied to every aspect of one’s life. The term "permaculture" was coined in the late 1970s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, authors of the first permaculture manual . These philosophers of science believe that "when we left tribal life, we left with it all guides to sensible behavior in the natural world." They believe that we, as a human race, have forgotten how to "evolve self-regulating systems" and that the widespread destruction caused by our current system of agriculture is clear evidence of this. Mollison and Holmgren sought to design a method through which humans might again live within self-regulating natural systems. These men were not modern "Luddites" who desired to reject all of modern science’s technological advances and return to primitive methods of production. On the contrary, they envisioned a lifestyle in which humans would utilize all of this new scientific understanding and their own commonsense to create small systems of food production which would simulate natural ecosystems and be individually tailored to suit the situation of each household. In this type of system the primary concerns would not be mass production and economics but "people care" and "earth care." Because successful permaculture requires great inputs of knowledge of natural systems, creativity, and expertise in a number of different areas, the ideal of "people care" encourages individuals to share both their crop yield and their knowledge and talents. "People care" also encompasses the ideal that, just as an individual should care for the earth, the earth should care and provide for that individual. Each permaculture system is thus developed and personally tailored to suit the needs and desires of the individuals for which it provides.
