THE PIPESTONE PETROGLYPHS
Thomas D. Thiessen National Park Service The "Three Maidens" Pipestone National Monument, bordering the town of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota, preserves and interprets the historic catlinite quarries which, for hundreds of years, served as the source of a soft red claystone that Native Americans carved into pipes and other objects. These famous quarries have often been described in travelers' accounts since 1832, when they were first known to have been visited by non-Native Americans (Prescott 1852; Parker 1966). Almost as famous as the quarries are the petroglyphs carved into Sioux Quartzite outcrops near the quarry pits. Many of these petroglyphs were observed, commented on, and recorded at various times during the nineteenth century by visitors drawn to the nearby quarries. A large number originally were carved into the quartzite bedrock that underlies a glacially deposited group of large granite boulders called the Three Maidens. At two other locations within the Monument, Native American petroglyphs have been recorded within the past decade. It is possible, even likely, that additional petroglyphs remain undiscovered within the Monument's boundary. Catlin's painting of Pipestone - Three Maidens are on the upper right.

Parowan Gap Petroglyphs
How The Wind Gap Was Formed
Approximately 15 million years ago, a long slender section of sedimentary rock sheared from the earth's crust along parallel fault lines. This up-thrown block, later named the Red Hills, began to inch its way above the surrounding valley floor. At the same time the block was rising, a stream was cutting a path perpendicularly across the ridge. For millions of years the uplifting of the ridge and the down-cutting of the stream remained in equilibrium. Eventually however, the relentless rise of the ridge and the drying of the region's climate combined forces to defeat the stream. The stream disappeared and the valley became a waterless wind gap. Continued erosion by wind and rain have shaped the gap into the pass seen today.
Parowan Gap Petroglyphs
Several centuries ago Native Americans traveling through the area stopped and pecked designs onto the smooth faces of large boulders found on the east side of the gap. Over the years many of the boulders have been covered with these chiseled figures known as petroglyphs. The petroglyphs here are thought to be the work of several cultural groups and represent a long period of use by Native cultures.

Petroglyphs (also called rock art) are carvings or drawings on rocks. Pictographs are painted designs on rocks. Several impressive, but extremely fragile, rock art sites exist in White Pine County. All sites in White Pine County are very difficult to access and require a high-clearance vehicle just to get to hiking distance. Detailed information on the exact locations of these delicate sites can be obtained by contacting the archaeologist at the US Forest Service (702) 289-3031 or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Offices (702) 289-1800 in Ely, Nevada. These extremely sensitive sites are easily destroyed by touching or applying any foreign substances (water, chalk, aluminum powder, etc.) to them. Please do not touch them in any manner. "Take Nothing But Photographs and Leave Nothing But Footprints" so others may enjoy this wonderful and irreplaceable art too. The easiest Petroglyph site to access is in Jakes Wash, on BLM public lands. This site is called City of Rocks or Honeymoon Hill. There are numerous anthropomorphous (human forms) and geometric designs pecked into the rocks. The location is on a high point which affords a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The high position may indicate that the site was used for calendric and seasonal observations of the suns position on the horizon. Take US 6 about 15 miles south of Ely, turn on a (good weather only) dirt road and proceed about 5 more miles. The site can be found by hiking uphill for about a quarter of a mile.

The Sanilac Petroglyphs is a Michigan State Historic Site located in the center of Michigan's Thumb area. Though this site is jointly administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries , the pavilion surrounding the petroglyph area is currently closed to the public. The park is not staffed due to Michigan budget concerns, and the area is fenced in and locked. However, it is possible to get permission to view the petroglyphs if you contact the park manager at Albert E. Sleeper State Park . There may be a use fee involved. Great care must be taken when viewing the petroglyphs not to touch them, walk on them, or harm them in any way. To get to the petroglyphs from the south, take M-53 north to Bay City - Forestville Road, turn right and go past New Greenleaf about 8 miles. Germania Road turns south and a parking lot for the petroglyph trail is almost immediately on the right hand side. If you are coming from the north, the petroglyphs are almost directly south of Bad Axe about ten miles. We visited the site May 31, 2003. One of our interests in visiting the site had to do with whether or not there is any correlation between the carvings on the sandstone at this site and the Soper-Savage artifacts (commonly called "frauds" by many researchers). The Soper-Savage collection is a featured exhibit at the

etroglyphs are designs pecked into boulders, cliff faces, and other stationary pieces of stone. This type of artwork is rare in Alaska. The Tlingit of southeast Alaska made similar carvings and there are a few pieces of rock art in western Alaska. In the Kodiak Archipelago, there are at least seven known petroglyph locations which depict human figures, animal forms and geometric designs. These characters are probably from Alutiiq myths or family stories. Archaeologists do not know the precise age of this art form, but suspect that at least some of the images may be up to 2,000 years old, based on their association with ancient village sites. Whale watching in Rincon/surfing/diving Petroglyphs I am trying to photograph and document all the ancient petroglyphs in Puerto Rico before they are lost to time. And they are going fast. If you have knowledge of any petroglyphs other than the obvious ones in the parks and the ones seen on this site, please e mail location to me: ltmtnele [sign for at] yahoo.com. Petroglyphs are ancient rock carvings. What they actually mean is anyone's guess. They can be found by running your fingers over the surface of the boulders and feeling for the depressions. Sometimes you can see them if the shadows are just right; other times they can be right in front of but yet, invisible. One I know of, I can only see faint impressions in the vertical rock face overlooking a pool when I am treading water in the pool. But when I get to the rock face itself (I have to hang over the cliff with a rope) I cannot find it.
Petroglyphs are normally found around water. The old timers allege that when the Fajardo yacht club was developed, thousands of them were destroyed. What we see now are just the ones that have survived. To find the petroglyphs, look around pools of water. Another good place to look is a section of land between two small streams. It has been said that the indigenous Indians thought that water was magical.

HAWAIIAN PETROGLYPHS
Na Ki'i Pohaku (Hawaiian Petroglyphs) is an early Hawaiian art expression carved in rock. Because of the nature of ancient Hawaiian life, it is difficult to interpert these petroglyphs. They can be legends, myths, art expression or everyday life in general. Petroglyphs are still visible today on various parts of the islands. The Rainbowman on Oahu, the Surfer, Paddler and Dancer on Hawaii. The choice of sandstone instead of lava rock (of which most Petroglyphs are on), came about because of the ancient Hawaiian legend that you will receive bad luck with the removal of any lava rock. Many people have experienced problems until they replace the rock back where it belonged. Due to superstition, lava rock couldn't be used, but the idea of Hawaiian Petroglyphs etched in rock would be wonderful to have, so we have decided to try them in sandstone like the southwest American Indian, Hieroglyphs.

Mysterious Petroglyphs of Western America Viewzone recently received images of some petroglyphs from Shawn Davies, one of the founders of the Ancient Historical Research Foundation and co-author of the article "Mysterious Petroglyphs in the Western US". One of the current projects of the Ancient Historical Research Foundation is concerning a series of mysterious petroglyphs that, so far, has only been found in the western US. To date no major headway has been made concerning the critical information of these petroglyphs, including any knowledge as to who made them and why. Shawn said that he would like to further their existing knowledge base concerning these petroglyphs by soliciting additional help from other individuals who may know of other existing panels. For this reason, he asked Viewzone to publish the attached photos and to ask readers to contact us concerning any knowledge they may have concerning the Mystery Glyphs. Shawn states that he does have information leading him to believe that they are at least 100+ years in age, since one of the panels was first seen by pioneers in the 1850's. To date they know of 24 panels scattered across the western US, separated by hundreds of miles. There is at least one known panel in all of the western States, California, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. The two exceptions being Washington and Oregon where they donÕt know of any existing panels É yet. They do have a few leads indicating that there was a panel in Oregon but it is now under water due to a man made dam.

    The Rodman Mountains Petroglyphs
    Lucerne Valley / Barstow Area
by Frank Rodrigue Situated in the Mojave Desert about 30 miles north-east of Lucerne Valley lies a historic wash where Indians once came to leave us reminders of the past. These "rock art" engravings were put here by Native Americans over the past 12,000 years using stone tools. Some believe the rock art was left by the Cahuilla or the Chemehuevi Indian Tribes. We may never know for sure. Over the years the petroglyphs site has been visited by hundreds of people. The BLM is keeping the access roads open, marked and available but the exact location is still somewhat unadvertised to help keep the destructive weekend warriors away. There is unfortunately a part of society that is not content with viewing and observing the beauty and history surrounding us.
The petroglyph visiting rules are quite simple: Only take pictures and leave footprints.
A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. 4WD is not necessary. At the entrance there is a clearing with plenty of parking.

I n the 1950's and '60's Morrisseau traveled widely to bush communities in Canada and visited some northern Minnesota reservations. He met with many who today are considered knowledgeable elders, both to learn from them and to teach. He visited many sacred sites where there are petroglyphs both carved and painted on the stone, places quite hard to reach, generally unknown. He taught by painting, as well as (later) writing. I named this sky-figure Mide Skyman when I first saw it. Clicking will display it larger. It was donated (in black and white drawing) to Awkesasne Notes in 1974. Morrisseau is the progenitor of an entire stylistic school, sometimes called "Northern Woodland Painting" and sometimes referred to as "Legend painting", but to almost all Indian people who know and are moved by it, it is called "Medicine Painting." Compare Skyman with the ancient rock painting, below left. M orrisseau would give paintings and drawings to people he stayed with back in the far shabby parts of reservations where government money and jobs never reaches, where the traditional old people tend to live. O ne of Medicine Painting's features is the so called "mystic x-ray vision" where animal spirits (and sometimes people) are shown with non-anatomical symbolic-patterns insides, representing internal powers, rather than guts. Projections hooks, points, rays indicate various forms of power radiating from the beings, and connecting lines indicate either " power directed to" or a causal connection of some type.

A Linguistic Analysis of Some West Virginia Petroglyphs
By Monroe Oppenheimer and Willard Wirtz
The West Virginia Archeologist Volume 41, Number 1, Spring 1989
The March, 1983, issue of Wonderful West Virginia contained a fascinating account of the "Wyoming and Boone County petroglyphs" (Pyle, 1983; Gallagher, 1983; Hyde, 1983; Fell, 1983). Markings on the stone walls of two rock shelters in the southern part of the state had been interpreted by Dr. Barry Fell, described as an emeritus professor at Harvard and "America's leading ancient language expert," as being in old Irish script called Celtic Ogam (or Ogham) and as dating back to the 6th or 8th Century A.D. They were interpreted by Dr. Fell as carrying, in extensive detail, the story of Christ's nativity.
The momentous implications of the reported discovery were obvious. It meant that somebody had come to this country from Europe, carrying Christianity's message, seven or eight centuries before Columbus.
Recognizing that some pieces of the picture needed further development, the 1983 Wonderful West Virginia articles promised that additional information would follow. Three years later, a brief follow-up story in the June, 1986, issue reported that the "Petroglyph Case Remains Open." This second article included none of the further information that the first report had referred to. It recognized that the earlier account had created "considerable controversy," and said that "Assembled Evidence Strengthens Petroglyph Interpretation Case," but left the reader to decide for himself if the evidence is plausible, regardless of the dissension of professionals and avocational archaeologists in the state.
