Petroleum engineering
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Petroleum engineering refers to the subsurface engineering activities related to the production of hydrocarbons , which can be either crude oil or gas . These activities are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry which are the activities of finding and producing hydrocarbons prior to the point of refining or distribution to a market, which is referred to as the downstream sector. Petroleum Geology and Petroleum Engineering are the two main subsurface disciplines within the oil and gas industry, which focus on maximising economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum Geology focuses on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, whilst Petroleum Engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure. The combined efforts of Geologists and Petroleum Engineers throughout the life of a hydrocarbon accumulation determine the way in which a reservoir is developed and depleted, and usually they have the highest impact on field economics. Petroleum Engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as Geophysics Petroleum Geology Formation Evaluation (well logging)

Petroleum Engineering
Petroleum engineers explore for and devise methods for the production of oil and natural gas. If a workable reservoir containing oil or natural gas is discovered, petroleum engineers work to achieve the maximum profitable recovery from the reservoir by determining and developing the most efficient production methods. Because only a small proportion of the oil and gas in a reservoir will flow out under natural forces, petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced recovery methods. These include injecting water, chemicals, or steam into an oil reservoir to force more of the oil out, and horizontal drilling or fracturing to connect more of a gas reservoir to a well. Since even the best methods in use today recover only a portion of the oil and gas in a reservoir, petroleum engineers work to find ways to increase this proportion.

I am Mounir, and I am a petroleum engineer. I got interested in petroleum engineering while attending four years of college in mining engineering. Several years after earning a bachelor's degree in mining engineering, I earned a master's degree in petroleum engineering. At MMS I calculate oil and gas reserves for the Gulf of Mexico fields. My job in MMS is to estimate how many cubic feet and how many barrels of oil there are in the Gulf of Mexico.

About Petroleum Engineering
Petroleum Engineering involves the technology of economically developing and producing subterranean reservoirs of oil, gas, steam and hot water and designing underground waste disposal facilities. This technology relies on basic concepts of physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and economics. Because more than 300 products are derived from petroleum, it has become a vital part of our everyday life. The petroleum industry is one of the largest and most prominent in the United States today and the companies involved are dependent on the services of petroleum engineers to explore, discover and produce oil and gas to meet energy needs.
The University of Southern California's Petroleum Engineering Program is one of the oldest in the country with considerable industry support and interaction. Its assets are numerous. Combined with USC's impressive academic and research facilities, along with its proximity to major oil fields in California, which offers an excellent setting for field visits, this small friendly program makes for a quality education provided by experienced and nationally renowned faculties.
Students interested in Petroleum Engineering should have an interest in energy resources, earth sciences, geology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computers, economics and engineering design, as well as management skills.

Jump to: navigation search Welcome to the department of petroleum engineering! Petroleum Engineering is involved in the exploration and production activities of petroleum as an upstream end of the energy sector. Upstream, refers to the source of the petroleum, the petroleum deposit, usually buried deep beneath the earth's surface supplying flow to consumers as a river supplies the ocean. The diverse topics covered by petroleum engineering are closely related to the earth sciences. Petroleum engineering topics include economics, geology, geochemistry, geomechanics, geophysics, oil drilling, geopolitics, knowledge management, seismology, team building, team work, tectonics, thermodynamics, well logging, well completion, oil and gas production, reservoir development, and pipelining. It is an increasingly technical profession that involves procuring reserves from places that predecessors deemed too difficult or not economic with the technology of the day or commodity prices. The use of high technology equipment, high speed computers, innovative materials, team management philosophies, statistics, probability analysis, and knowledge management, is usually coupled with the reality of only indirect measurement of most essential facts due to being buried under miles of earth. As such engineers must sometimes develop new techniques from one source to another, and one look at the number of patents held for use in the industry is testimony to the highly technical nature of this field.

It is an increasingly technical profession that involves procuring reserves from places that predecessors deemed too difficult or not economic with the technology of the day or commodity prices. While not thought of as highly technical in some circles, this is a fallacy. The use of high technology equipment, high speed computers, innovative materials, team management philosophies, statistics, probability analysis, and knowledge management, is usually coupled with the reality of only indirect measurement of most essential facts due to being buried under miles of earth. One look at the number of patents held for use in the industry is testimony to the highly technical nature of this field.
edit Key aspect
One key aspect of this profession is excellence. Where mistakes are measured in millions of dollars petroleum engineers will be held to a higher standard. Deepwater operations can be compared to space travel in terms of technical challenges. Arctic conditions and conditions of extreme heat have to be contended with. High Temperature and High Pressure (HTHP) environments that have become increasingly commonplace in today's operations require the petroleum engineer to be saavy in topics as wide ranging as thermohydraulics, geomechanics, and intelligent systems.

Printer-friendly version Petroleum Engineering involves locating petroleum and natural gas deposits (called reservoirs) and estimating their value. Determining the quantity and quality of oil and natural gas in a reservoir is essential, as setting up pretroleum and gas production is extremely expensive, potential recovery must justify the cost. Petroleum Engineering is concerned with the safe drilling of oil wells and managing the extraction of oil and gas from reservoirs. Petroleum Engineers may specialise in different disciplines such as drilling exploratory wells, the design and building of oil wells and estimating the size, volume and quality of petroleum reservoirs. Petroleum Engineers manage the safe and cost effiecient day to day running of petroleum and gas reservoirs.
