    About the Department
Our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying both normal function and drug action is advancing rapidly. The science of pharmacology addresses these issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. Researchers explore all levels of biological organization, from molecular interactions to entire animal systems. The Department of Pharmacology is part of the Medical School at the University of Minnesota. The Medical School and other healthcare professional schools make up the Academic Health Center. PlaceMenu("mainmenu") Welcome! Pharmacology at Yale
Pharmacology at Yale University has a rich history of achievement and a strong tradition of scholarship. Yale was the site of the first studies and trials of anticancer chemotherapy. The modern era of cancer chemotherapy began when Alfred Gilman and Louis Goodman studied the effects of nitrogen mustard on transplanted lymphosarcoma in mice and then initiated clinical trials in 1942 The department has maintained its position of pre-eminence through the end of the century with the recruitment and development of scientists with international reputations. Careers in Pharmacology
There are a variety of opportunities for those with degrees in pharmacology in addition to teaching and research in academic setting. Pharmaceutical companies and government research agencies have increasing requirements for scienti sts trained in pharmacology for the conduct and management of basic research. As a result, there are extensive employment opportunities for graduates of the program. Recent graduates of this department are now pursuing research that includes not only phar macology but also molecular biology, biochemistry, neurophysiology, oncology, cell biology and medicine.

The Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) within the UCSF School of Medicine pursues two related academic goals: [1] to discover new knowledge through innovative research on chemical and biological phenomena; [2] to transmit knowledge to students (graduate students, postdoctoral colleagues, and students and fellows in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry) at the conceptual and empirical levels Research in CMP spans a broad range of studies. Included are analyses of the mechanisms and biological consequences of the interactions of drugs and other small molecule ligands with receptors, channels, and cellular organelles, hormonal and sensory signal transduction, cytoskeleton-based intracellular motility, cell movement and migration, synaptic transmission and plasticity, protein design and structure prediction, protein folding, structure and function, and RNA-protein interactions. Experimental approaches include genetics, chemistry and crystallography; experimental systems stretch from yeast to human. (See more details under Faculty.) CMP is the administrative home to the graduate education program in Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Other graduate studies with Department faculty are carried out within two consortium programs, Biomedical Sciences (BMS) and the Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS); inquiries should be directed to those programs. Inquiries regarding postdoctoral research in CMP should be addressed to individual faculty members. For other information, search this Web Site or contact the CMP administrative staff.

Seminar Series Click here to see the Fall 2007 Seminar Series Schedule. The Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics plays an important role in the educational and research missions of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Our faculty provides professional instruction in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Allied Health and Graduate Studies. The Department offers Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. degrees. We are deeply committed to graduate and post-doctoral training. Our trainees successfully compete for prestigious positions in academia, industry and the government. Overall, we have made substantial progress toward our goal of establishing a program in “Integrative Pharmacological Sciences” and the unique place this program occupies among academic medical centers nationwide. This theme, in which we can exploit molecular information in the context of systems biology, will be crucial for harvesting the fruits of the human genome, developing new therapeutics and providing the best possible education for our health professionals.
