Complexity : Life at the Edge of Chaos by Roger Lewin "Put together one of the world's best science writers with one of the universe's most fascinating subjects and you are bound to produce a wonderful book. . . . The subject of complexity is vital and controversial. This book is important and beautifully done."Stephen Jay Gould "[Complexity] is that curious mix of complication and organization that we find throughout the natural and human worlds: the workings of a cell, the structure of the brain, the behavior of the stock market, the shifts of political power. . . . [I]t is time science . . . think about meaning as well as counting information. . . . This is the core of the complexity manifesto. Read it, think about it . . . but don't ignore it."Ian Stewart, Nature Complexity theory holds that at the root of all complex systems lie a few simple rules that will yield a grand unification of the life sciences. Lewin personalizes a dramatic story of scientific discovery that includes explorations by such diverse scientists as

The Use and Abuse of Philosophy of Science*
Recently, P.Z. Myers posted about the abuses of philosophy of science (particularly Popper) perpitrated by creationists. To my dismay, he reports that: Scientists are a pragmatic bunch who are more likely to poke something with a stick than wonder if they should poke something with a stick. We are Bold Men and Women of Action! Very few have much training in the philosophy of science, and the usual experience in grad school is to get dissuaded from taking any courses at all (and sometimes, from thinking at all), and instead get right to work with a sharp knife or a PCR machine or whatever. Philosophy, if anything, is the exercise we do after the fact to rationalize what we just did. However, he distances himself from this view: Although...the older I get and the more philosophy I read, the more I think some exposure to philosophy would be a useful requirement for biology graduate students. Questioning assumptions is a good first step towards learning something new, and that's exactly what philosophy can train people to do. Others were quicker to discount the value of philosophy to scientists. Arun, for example:

http://www.iotascope.com/philosophy_of_science/wittgenstein_lecture_on_ethics.ht
My subject, as you know, is Ethics and I will adopt the explanation of that term which Professor Moore has given in his book Principia Ethica. He says: "Ethics is the general enquiry into what is good." Now I am going to use the term Ethics in a slightly wider sense, in a sense in fact which includes what I believe to be the most essential part of what is generally called Aesthetics. And to make you see as clearly as possible what I take to be the subject matter of Ethics I will put before you a number of more or less synonymous expressions each of which could be substituted for the above definition, and by enumerating them I want to produce the same sort of effect which Galton produced when he took a number of photos of different faces on the same photographic plate in order to get the picture of the typical features they all had in common. And as by showing to you such a collective photo I could make you see what is the typicalsayChinese face; so if you look through the row of synonyms which I will put before you, you will, I hope, be able to see the characteristic features they all have in common and these are the characteristic features of Ethics. Now instead of saying "Ethics is the enquiry into what is good" I could have said Ethics is the enquiry into what is valuable, or, into what is really important, or I could have said Ethics is the enquiry into the meaning of life, or into what makes life worth living, or into the right way of living. I believe if you look at all these phrases you will get a rough idea as to what it is that Ethics is concerned with.

California Physicist's "Einstein's Legacy" website scientifically defining the human Mind/Spirit/Soul is controversial research
San Francisco Bay Area, San Mateo, California......Rated as one of the TOP 1% of websites on the Web and acclaimed by colleges, universities, research institutes, science, philosophy, psychology, medical and sociological organizations as well as individuals worldwide, San Mateo resident Nelson Rau has made his "QUFD: Einstein's Legacy" website a most intriquing yet controversial place to visit on the Web ( http://go.to/QUFD ). Billed as a website for 5 year old "mad scientists" who will have their first Doctorate by age 10, Father Jerome (Mr. Rau's legally ordained professional name, as a researcher/scientist/theologian/author and ordained Cleric of The Ancient Order, the OA/OWB) says his works are surely readable and understandable by adults as well, no matter how much one may detest reading about science. He says he has written the equivalent of a "Science, the Mind, Humanity and the Cosmos FOR DUMMIES!"
