A magnet levitating above a high-temperature superconductor demonstrates the Meissner effect Physics is the science of matter and its motion as well as space and time — the science that deals with concepts such as force energy mass , and charge . Physics is an experimental science it is the general analysis of nature , conducted to understand how the world around us behaves. Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, having emerged as a modern science in the 17th century, and through its modern subfield of astronomy , it may be the oldest of all. Those who work professionally in the field are known as physicists Advances in physics often translate to the technological sector, and sometimes influence the other sciences, as well as mathematics and philosophy. For example, advances in the understanding of electromagnetism have led to the widespread use of electrically driven devices (televisions, computers, home appliances etc.); advances in

    Raman Spectroscopy
Stanford University announces a potential revolution in biological microscopic imaging technology with a precision level of 1 trillionth of a meter, nearly 1,000 times smaller than current imaging methods. The process is a form of Raman spectroscopy and involves injecting spectrally unique nanoparticles into a body and observing how they distribute throughout the body (gold nanoparticles in the case of this initial study). The first clinical trial will involve using the gold nanoparticles and Raman spectroscopy as a colorectal cancer detection system in conjunction with colonoscopy.

From those pioneering days and throughout the Department's long and illustrious history, its faculty and students have been engaged in groundbreaking research and standard-setting instruction, contributing importantly to Harvard's reputation as one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the world. Among Harvard's 43 Nobel laureates, 10 are or were physics faculty members. Today, the latest generation of Harvard physicists continues to bring new insights into the exploration of fundamental problems involving physics at all length scales, and to provide outstanding and innovative educational opportunities to the many talented men and women who enroll in Harvard's flexible undergraduate and graduate programs.

New Ground States seen at interfaces of correlated oxides
Researchers in the Abbamonte group , working in collaboration with Anand Bhattacharya of Argonne National Laboratory and the Eckstein and Zuo groups at Illinois, have shown that the interface between the two antiferromagnetic insulators LaMnO and SrMnO is ferromagnetic and metallic. Their results demonstrate that new ground states may arise at the interface between correlated oxides, providing a potential route to new devices. Their results were reported in Phys. Rev. Lett
