      Plant Biology
Plant biology is a thriving area of research, where the emphasis is placed on using genetic and molecular techniques to answer fundamental questions relating both to plant function and development, and to the responses of plants to biotic and abiotic stress. This approach includes functional genomics supported by a strong background in the biochemical and physiological analysis of plant tissues. Key research areas include: membrane transport proteins involved in the acquisition and distribution of essential nutrients around the plant; defences against disease-causing organisms; control of chloroplast development; chlorophyll synthesis; plant function in relation to environmental change; and plants as a source of renewable energy. Facilities for the growth and molecular analysis of plants are excellent, and include the latest
developments in microarray research and associated bioinformatics.

    PC News
    • We used fast absorbance spectroscopy to investigate in vivo binding dynamics and electron transfer between plastocyanin (pc) and photosystem I (PSI), and cytochrome (cyt) f oxidation kinetics in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutants in which either the binding or the release of pc from PSI was diminished. Under single flash-excitation conditions, electron flow between PSI and the cyt complex was not affected by a 5-fold lowering of the binding affinity of pc to PSI, as induced by a mutation replacing the tryptophan-651 of the PsaA subunit by a serine residue (PsaA-W651S). On the other hand, electron flow from PSI to the cyt b 6 f complex was very sensitive to a 2- to 3-fold decrease in the rate of pc release from PSI, obtained by replacing the glutamic acid residue 613 of the PsaB subunit with glutamine (PsaB-E613N). Thus, our data indicate that under these experimental conditions the release of oxidized pc limits electron transfer between cyt b 6 f complex and PSI in vivo .

DP IRES 2002-24 When adoption costs depend on the technical growth rate, the effect of growth on optimal lifetime of machines is indeterminate ; the creative destruction effect can be compensated by the adoption effect, and faster growth rates delay the technological substitution. Then, we analyze the consequences of adoption costs in technological substitution extending the model in two ways: we let adoption costs depend on the technical growth rate, and we endogenize them, depending on the technological gap. In this paper we introduce adoption costs in a vintage capital model. http://www.ires.ucl.ac.be/DP/Biblio_html/2002-24.html (170 words)

Indeterminate pinto bean genotypes had, on average, higher mean seed yield and showed a greater seed yield response to increasing soil moisture availability compared to determinate genotypes. In addition, three indeterminate pinto bean genotypes (Othello, Nodak and Fiesta) and three determinate genotypes (Agate, Agassiz and Earliray) were exposed to a soil moisture gradient to study the effects of soil moisture level on seed yield and other agronomic traits.

Programs of Study
The Program of Study in plant biology is designed for students who would like to gain a greater understanding of the structure, classification, ecology, function, development, and molecular biology of plants. Two options are offered: (a) botany and (b) plant biotechnology. In Option (a), students are required to take the introductory botany course and a minimum of three other courses from a group including function and development, cell structure and function, structure, classification, evolution, ecology, and molecular biology. Option (b) is primarily for students who wish to specialize in the molecular biology of plants and its agricultural application. It centers on the Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering of Plants course. In addition students should take at least ten credits of other courses in plants and biotechnology. In addition to plant biology and plant ecology offerings of the biological sciences, students may choose from courses offered by other departments in areas of applied research such as crop science, floriculture and ornamental horticulture, fruit and vegetable sciences, plant breeding, and plant pathology.
