Overview
Plasma Physics Areas of Research Plasma Physics Faculty: Overview The plasma research effort at MIT is concerned with a wide variety of problems, ranging from astrophysical plasmas to laboratory and fusion-grade plasmas, as well as with using plasmas for environmental remediation. This work combines theory and experiment and involves faculty members from physics and other departments. The program has the goals of understanding the physics of plasmas and charged-particle beams and of designing plasma containment devices, with the ultimate aim of achieving the conditions in which a plasma can ignite by fusion reactions. Research is carried out not only on-site, but also at other major national and international laboratories. Most of the volume of the universe is in the electrodynamic plasma state. Moreover, the dynamics of the universe on a grand scale is described as a gravitational plasma. The theory of galaxies as gravitational plasmas is well-developed and its results, for example, spiral arm structures, are relatively well-correlated with the experimental observations. While many aspects of laboratory plasmas are understood and correlate with experiments in relatively simple magnetic geometries, the physics of high-temperature plasmas on a microscopic scale continues to be an area of intensive investigation.

Plasma Physics
Research on magnetic confinement fusion has undergone large changes during the last decade, moving away from the semi-empirical, predominantly experiment-driven approach to one accompanied and supported in all areas by first-principle based modelling. This development has been particularly dramatic in the area of turbulence, which is held responsible for energy and particle transport in magnetically confined plasmas. For a qualitative progress in the theoretical understanding of turbulence in fusion devices and in the capability to quantitatively predict its consequences, supercomputers are absolutely essential as an instrument of numerical modelling.
Objectives
The objectives of this JRA are to adapt important European plasma physics codes to the DEISA environment and to enable them for advanced supercomputing. Their satisfactory resolution will allow to exploit existing and planned large experiments more efficiently, including, in particular the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER, and to proceed more rapidly to a practicable fusion power plant. Advisories of this JRA include well-known scientists in the field of numerical plasma simulation, Prof. K. Lackner and Prof. J. Nuehrenberg from the Max Planck Institute for Plasmaphysics, and Prof. L.Villard from the Centre de Recherches en Physiques des Plasmas (CRPP-Lausanne).

"Ionized" means that at least one electron has been dissociated from, or added to, a proportion of the atoms or molecules. The free electric charges make the plasma electrically conductive so that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields. Plasma is typically formed by heating and ionizing a gas, stripping electrons away from atoms, thereby enabling the positive and negative charges to move freely.

Plasma physics
Fusion on earth requires the fusion fuel to be heated to 150 million degrees. In that state, matter forms a plasma. For the operation of a fusion power plant, a thorough understanding is needed of the behaviour of this "fourth state of matter". European research focuses on using strong magnetic fields to keep a hot fusion plasma together, and to isolate it from material walls: so-called magnetic confinement . In the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the understanding of the basic principles of plasmas and magnetic confinement.
Magnetic confinement
At the very high temperatures required for fusion to occur, electrons are knocked of the atoms they belong to, leaving the atoms fully ionized. The resulting mixture of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons is very different from a normal gas or liquid and is given a special name - plasma Figure 1: plasma follows magnetic field lines Because a plasma is a mixture of charged particles, it can be controlled and influenced by magnetic fields. Charged plasma particles can move easily along magnetic field lines, but not across them. If the magnetic field is given the right shape, plasma particles can be kept together and away from the walls of the plasma vessel, in other words, the plasma can be

14, 2008) The first milestone in the successive assembly of the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device at the Greifswald branch of Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP) has been reached on schedule with the completion of the first two half-modules of the large-scale experiment: Two-tenths of the inner core of the device is now ready and is being assembled. Industrial production of the essential components for Wendelstein 7-X is almost complete. (Science Daily)

There have been reports that NASA beamed a Beatles song towards the Polaris star system, though as this is a 1,000 light year round trip, it's highly unlikely it will ever be received by extra-terrestrials. With the transmission technology and planning we are employing there is a much... (Science Daily)
