Plastic is the general term for a wide range of synthetic or semisynthetic polymerization products. They are composed of organic condensation or addition polymers and may contain other substances to improve performance or reduce costs. There are many natural polymers generally considered to be "plastics". Plastics can be formed into objects or films or fibers . Their name is derived from the malleability, or plasticity , of many of them.

World Food Prices Soar As Asia Consumes More
food prices have soared 35% in the last year alone, including increases in dairy prices of 80% and grain prices of 42%, on top of the 30% increase between 2002 and 2007. Global wheat stocks are at 30-year lows, and grain prices have been rising for five years, putting an end to the era of cheap food. Drought, the falling dollar, investment in commodities and use of farmland to grow biofuel crops have contributed to food woes, but rising population is the long-term culprit. The world is expected to have 9 billion people by 2050, and most of the extra 2.5 billion people will be in the developing world. Angel Gurria, head of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, comments "This is an additional setback for the world economy, at a time when we are already going through major turbulence, but the biggest drama is the impact of higher food prices on the poor."

The First Man-Made Plastic - Parkesine
The first man-made plastic was created by Alexander Parkes who publicly demonstrated it at the 1862 Great International Exhibition in London. The material called Parkesine was an organic material derived from cellulose that once heated could be molded, and retained its shape when cooled.
Celluloid
Celluloid is derived from cellulose and alcoholized camphor. John Wesley Hyatt invented celluloid as a substitute for the ivory in billiard balls in 1868. He first tried using collodion a natural substance, after spilling a bottle of it and discovering that the material dried into a tough and flexible film. However, the material was not strong enough to be used as a billiard ball, until the addition of camphor, a derivative of the laurel tree. The new celluloid could be molded with heat and pressure into a durable shape.

About PLASTIC
Elevator pitch
PLASTIC is a protocol for communication between client-side astronomy applications. It is very simple for application developers to adopt and is easily extended. Through PLASTIC applications can do tasks such as instruct each other to load VOTables, highlight a subset of rows or load an image of a particular area of sky. Although such operations are quite simple, they enable powerful collaborations between tools. The philosophy is that the astronomer should have a suite of interoperating tools at his disposal, each of which does

      The Mission
Welcome to the STEREO PLASTIC website...
Part of the NASA STEREO mission for providing a global view of the Sun and its effects on the Heliosphere. The NASA Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission uses two nearly identical spacecraft in orbit about the Sun to provide a unique and revolutionary view of the Sun-Earth system. The strategic placement of the two spacecraft allows for the first time a stereoscopic (3-D) view of the Sun and the interplanetary space environment out to the orbit of the Earth. Of particular interest to this mission is the origin, propagation and evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). CMEs are the primary cause of major space weather disturbances at the Earth. The STEREO payload combines remote imaging of the Sun and its eruptions with in-situ sampling of the particles and fields that subsequently flow past the spacecraft. The Plasma and Suprathermal Ion Composition (PLASTIC) portion of the scientific payload samples the solar wind and suprathermal particles, providing measurements of kinetic properties and composition. The PLASTIC consortium includes the University of New Hampshire, the University of Bern, the Max Planck Institute, Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, under the overall direction of the University of New Hampshire (Dr. A.B. Galvin,PI).

Plastics
Plastics play an important role in almost every aspect of our lives. Plastics are used to manufacture everyday products such as beverage containers, household items, and furniture. The widespread use of this valuable material demands proper management of used plastics, as they have become a larger part of the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream in recent decades.
Just the Facts
  • In 2006, the United States generated about 14 million tons of plastics in the MSW stream as containers and packaging, over 6 million tons as nondurable goods, and almost 9 million tons as durable goods. The amount of plastics generation in MSW has increased from less than 1 percent in 1960 to 11.7 percent in 2006. Plastics are a rapidly growing segment of the MSW stream. The largest category of plastics are found in containers and packaging (e.g., soft drink bottles, lids, shampoo bottles), but they also are found in durable (e.g., appliances, furniture) and nondurable goods (e.g., diapers, trash bags, cups and utensils, medical devices).
