Environmental Health POLLUTION CONTROL - WATER QUALITY Water Quality requirements originate from a European Directive of 15th July 1980 (80/778/EEC) relating to the quality of water intended for human consumption. In 1999, Local Authorities and Water Boards enforced legislation, key points that are relevant to this authority have been extracted and are detailed below. Water Scotland Act 1990

Water Pollution Control
The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 as amended in 1988 was enacted to prevent and control water pollution and to preserve or maintain or restore the quality of water. As per the provisions of this Act, the local bodies and industries, which discharge sewage / trade effluent are required to apply and obtain consent from the Board. The industries generating trade effluent are required to provide Effluent Treatment Plant to treat their trade effluent to satisfy the standards prescribed by the Board. Industries are constantly monitored regarding the functioning of their effluent treatment plants and samples of treated sewage / trade effluent are collected regularly to asses the quality of effluent discharged and also to assess the efficiency of the effluent treatment plants provided. Water Pollution
With the increased development and industrialisation of the world so the likelihood of water pollution increases. While it is essential that we have clean fresh drinking water for drinking and cooking. The other main forms of water pollution come from: - runoff from farms whether pesticide, herbicide or fertiliser all will pollute the watercourse into which it runs. Industry is responsible for the discharge of many chemical agents into watercourses or leaching into water table. Trade, such as the export and import of oil, we have all heard of the oil spills which cause devastation. Related information: Reedbed Sewage Treatment Pollution Links www.sepa.org.uk

  • Home ... Helpful? Managing Water Pollution At DERM we are constantly working to ensure the quality of our surface water, groundwater, stormwater runoff and drinking water for our community. This includes a variety of activities such as promulgating regulations, maintaining permit programs, and participating on local advisory committees. Sources of water pollution can be wastewater, other liquid wastes, stormwater runoff or even solid wastes that contaminate or even obstruct our waterways and conveyance systems. An important consideration in Miami-Dade County's unique environment is that anything that spills on the ground could contaminate our source of drinking water, the aquifer, which is located just below the surface. Many of these sources may be industrial or pretreatment facilities, however industry does not bear all the responsibility for this type of pollution . Even you contribute to this type pollution when you pour your used engine oil in the backyard, throw litter out the car window, or use too much fertilizer or pesticides at home. Together we must work together to ensure that the water bodies, groundwater, and drinking water that we share will be clean and healthy.
