Mammals developed from primitive mammal-like reptiles during the Triassic Period , some 200-245 million years ago. After the terminal Cretaceous extinction (65 million years ago) eliminated the dinosaurs, mammals as one of the surviving groups, underwent an adaptive radiation during the Tertiary Period. The major orders of mammals developed at this time, including the Primates to which humans belong. Phylogenetic relationships of the primates. Image from Purves et al., Life: The Science of Biology , 4th Edition, by Sinauer Associates ( www.sinauer.com ) and WH Freeman ( www.whfreeman.com ), used with permission. Other primates include the tarsiers, lemurs, gibbons, monkeys, and apes. Although we have significant differences from other primates, we share an evolutionary history that includes traits such as opposable thumbs, stereoscopic vision, larger brains, and nails replacing claws. Primates are relatively unspecialized mammals: they have no wings, still have all four limbs, cannot run very fast, have generally weak teeth, and lack armor or thick protective hides.

About this article
Close This article appeared in the Guardian on Friday October 26 2007 on p9 of the UK news and analysis section. It was last updated at 00:56 on October 26 2007. An orang-utan in Sumatra, Indonesia. Photograph: Michael DeYoung/Corbis Sri Lanka's Horton Plains slender loris has been seen just four times since 1937. Miss Waldron's red colobus monkey was not found in an exhaustive six-year study ending in 1999 and there have been no definite sightings since. Vietnam's golden-headed langur and the Hainan gibbon in China both number in the dozens. These are the primate species on the edge of oblivion and, according to a report commissioned by three leading conservation charities, scores of others of our closest relatives are poised to suffer the same fate. It names the top 25 species most in need of help but concludes that 114 primate species are also close to extinction.

The taxonomy of primates is an issue that is not resolved and has undergone many revisions over the years. Here will be presented five different current taxonomies, with two by the same author but have dramatic differences.

Evolution of the hepcidin gene in primates
Ludovica Segat Alessandra Pontillo Michele Milanese Alessandro Tossi and Sergio Crovella BMC Genomics doi:10.1186/1471-2164-9-120 Published:
    Abstract (provisional)
    Background
Hepcidin/LEAP-1 is an iron regulatory hormone originally identified as an antimicrobial peptide. As part of a systematic analysis of the evolution of host defense peptides in primates, we have sequenced the orthologous gene from 14 species of non-human primates.
    Results
The sequence of the mature peptide is highly conserved amongst all the analyzed species, being identical to the human one in great apes and gibbons, with a single residue conservative variation in Old-World monkeys and with few substitutions in New-World monkeys.

Photo: Herbert Gustafson Hamel Named New Library Director A 25-year veteran of the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center is the new head of its library. Raymond Hamel, known to many as one of the New York Times's premiere crossword puzzle constructors and a movie trivia buff, becomes the third director of the Lawrence Jacobsen Library, succeeding Cynthia Robinson and, before her, Larry Jacobsen, who began the library in the 1970s and retired in 2003. As Director of Library and Information Services, Hamel will oversee library operations including hiring, budgeting, purchasing, space planning and goal setting. He will lead the design team for PIN, and serve as a member of the design team for PrimateLit, an international database for primate literature. He will work closely with senior library staff members Joanne Brown and Matthew Hoffman, as well as with the many students who are the core of daily library operations and customer service. Hamel has been the media reviews editor for the American Journal of Primatology for the past five years. With Jacobsen and Brown, he co-authored Internet Resources in Primatology, ILAR Journal, 1987. He is also the author of The New York Times Trivia Quiz Book and co-author of Star Trek Crosswords, among several other puzzle books. Hamel worked as a host and writer for WTDY-AM Madison radio's weekly trivia show in the late '80s to early '90s.

    About Primates
Grant Applications Assisting PCI News ... Publications Primate Conservation, Inc., (PCI) is an all volunteer not for profit foundation [501(c)(3)] dedicated to studying, preserving and maintaining the habitats of the least known and most endangered primates in the world. Over 100 species, approaching half of all primates, are threatened or endangered. The tropical forests where most primates live are disappearing at an alarming rate.
Jane Goodall and others who have done field studies of primates in their natural habitat have shown that dedicated individuals are one of the keys to successful conservation. PCI provides grants to support the next generation of researchers and conservationists in the field. These grantees research the needs of species, focusing the attention of local people and the world. In many cases they are the endangered primates only defense against hunters and loggers.
