The faculty in the psychology department believe that a strong scientific and research foundation in psychology best prepares students to make use of psychological research in everyday life. Such preparation also enables students to continue with graduate training in psychology, whether one's career choice is clinical, applied, or research oriented. The psychology department at Brandeis therefore emphasizes a rigorous, scientific approach to the understanding of human behavior. The program examines the most up-to-date and comprehensive psychological research and theory and provides opportunities for direct involvement in psychological research and application. Faculty conduct research in diverse areas that include cognitive science, normal and abnormal development, social interaction, spatial orientation, linguistics, perception, memory, emotion, life span development, and effects of brain damage.

Our students compete nationally for scholarships, grants and awards. Together with faculty, they publish cutting-edge research. They consistently secure postgraduate positions at some of the most prestigious universities in the country as well as employment in industry, government and academia. Department Chair Welcome to the Psychology Department at Tufts University. We are a large, modern, and diverse Psychology department. Our department is focused on preparing undergraduate and graduate students to ask science-based questions about the origins and mechanisms of human and animal behavior using discovery-oriented research and teaching. We are highly student-oriented, striving to combine excellence in teaching, research and advising.
Among the departments at Tufts, we are distinctive in having one of the largest majors on campus, while simultaneously maintaining one of the University’s highest research profiles. Our primary focus is strongly experimental, with researchers at the forefront of neuroscience, cognition, social cognition, experimental clinical psychology, cognitive and affective neuroscience, and developmental psychology. By purposefully bridging across these different areas of Psychology, we want to create a more complete picture of the how and why of behavior, from the microstructure of perception and cognition to the varied robustness of social behavior. In both our undergraduate and graduate programs, we are highly committed to getting our students involved in collaborative scholarship at every level, both inside and outside the classroom.

Our department is divided into three research areas, Cognitive Developmental , and Social Psychology. Each area has its own theme, but a common thread across all three areas is a connection between the study of psychology and people's everyday lives. In our graduate program , students work closely with faculty to develop and conduct original research. Coursework provides depth of knowledge in the student's main areas of interest, as well as breadth in other areas of psychology. We have excellent facilities, and conduct research in both the laboratory and community. Our undergraduate program offers courses in all areas of psychology, and provides many unique opportunities.
