    However, the only examples I know of seem to be very low-dimensional: for example, in the DCQE, the state can be described using a basis consisting of just two vectors (eg. "slit A" and "slit B", or else some rotation thereof such as "in phase" and "anti phase", i.e. A+B and A-B). Looking at such examples, I can't see why the description needs to be a Hilbert space.

      In the late 19th century, physics was aware of a paradox regarding the spectrum of light emitted from an object (a so-called black-body) at a given temperature. Classical theory required that this black-body radiation should show equal amounts of energy being radiated at all possible wavelengths. This would necessarily result in an infinite amount of energy being radiated at shorter and shorter wavelengths, which is both physically impossible and also not what is observed. This paradox was known as the Ultraviolet Catastrophe. In 1899, Max Planck devised a mathematical formula that provided the correct spectrum for black-body radiation, seemingly solving the paradox. The formula rested on an unusual hypothesis that the radiated light could not be of arbitrary size, but had to be composed of discrete lumps of energy that Planck dubbed 'quanta'. The energy of a quantum of light is equal to its frequency multiplied by a constant now known as Planck's constant. If high frequency UV light only comes in quanta with high energies, the Ultraviolet Catastrophe cannot occur. Planck's constant is so small that these individual lumps are essentially indetectable at the human scale.

    Reviewed by Philip Camp The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to quantum mechanics for undergraduates and graduate students in chemistry, materials science, and biology. The style of the text is jaunty, which makes the book enjoyable to read and, more importantly, accessible. Unusual diagrams and schematics provide fresh perspectives on some old topics. Technical details are separated from the main text in appendices to the chapters, and more specialised applications of the general theory are postponed until the final chapters. The ‘chemistry’ component of the book covers atomic structure and the Periodic Table, valence-bond and molecular-orbital theories, Group Theory and spectroscopy. None of the chapters are dedicated to materials science or biology. I spotted several misleading statements, of which I give two examples. On page 22 the relations

    Around the turn of the century, the German physicist Max Planck postulated that a black body emitted light in discrete packets of energy. A few years later in 1905, Einstein invented the concept of light quanta by which he explained the photoelectric effect (and for which he recieved the 1921 Nobel Prize). The next twenty years were filled with revolutionary ideas. Niels Bohr postulated that electrons orbiting atoms could do so only in a discrete set of orbits, and Louis de Broglie proposed the idea that not only did light, previously thought to be a wave, have particle properties, but all particles had wave properties. The cumulation of all this was the theory of Quantum Mechanics , developed in the mid twenties by Erwin Schroedinger, Werner Heisenberg and Paul Dirac. Quantum Mechanics describes all of the microscopic world of atoms, electrons ..... (this definitely needs to be worked out more!       The system (an all-electron model) was described by the Kohn-Sham scheme of the density-functional theory within the local density approximation for the electron exchange-correlation (Perdew-Zunger parametrization).
