Radiocarbon dating
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Radiocarbon dating is a radiometric dating method that uses the naturally occurring radioisotope carbon-14 C) to determine the age of carbonaceous materials up to about 60,000 years. Raw, i.e. uncalibrated, radiocarbon ages are usually reported in radiocarbon years Before Present " (BP), "Present" being defined as AD 1950. Such raw ages can be calibrated to give calendar dates. The technique of radiocarbon dating was discovered by Willard Libby and his colleagues in 1949 during his tenure as a professor at the University of Chicago . Libby estimated that the steady state radioactivity concentration of exchangeable carbon-14 would be about 14 disintegrations per minute (dpm) per gram. In 1960, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for this work. He first demonstrated the accuracy of radiocarbon dating by accurately measuring the age of wood from an ancient Egyptian royal barge whose age was known from historical documents. One of the frequent uses of the technique is to date organic remains from archaeological sites. Plants fix atmospheric carbon during photosynthesis, so the level of C14 in living plants and animals equals the level of C14 in the atmosphere.

Basics
Carbon has two stable isotopes: carbon-12 ( C), and carbon-13 ( C). In addition, there are tiny amounts of the unstable ( radioactive ) isotope carbon-14 C) on Earth C has a half-life of just under 6000 years, and so would have long ago vanished from the earth, were it not for its constant formation by cosmic ray impacts on nitrogen in the earth's atmosphere . When cosmic rays enter the atmosphere they undergo various transformations, including the production of neutrons . The resulting neutrons participate in the following reaction:
n C + H
This reaction is relatively common, as nitrogen constitutes nearly 80% of

Advanced Physics Forums Lecture and Theory Topics Particle Physics PDA View Full Version : c-14 naturally radioactive? Saim Sultan 2007 January 11th, 14:27 is carbon-14 a natural or an artificial radioactive element? and does the defination of natural radioactive elements state tht "only elements with atomic number equal to or greater than 82 are a natural radioactive elements"? arent the unstable isotopes of smaller atoms included in this defination?
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiocarbon_dating editor 2007 January 11th, 15:07 What do you mean by 'artificial' ? If a reaction produces, for example C-10 it has a half life of 19.2 seconds, C-11 has 20.4 minutes, C-14 has 5730 years.
Short half lives means that there isn't much of it around from the formation of the Earth. But there may be processes going on now, natural or man made, that produce these isotopes.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiocarbon_dating Fernanda 2007 January 11th, 15:40 C 14 occurs naturally in nature and is the reason why we're able to do carbon dating of objects fairly accurately up to around 50,000 years. Obviously we weren't around then to produce any C14 artificially.
I don't understand what definition you are talking about. There are many isotopes below number 82.

People who contend the universe and or earth are young, how do you deal with carbon dating? Carbon dating has shown that nothing is older than 4.5 billion years old, and the vast majority of samples from space are exactly 4.5 billion years old. I'm not saying this proves the Big Bang or anything, but it seems to disprove young earth/universe ideology and be very congruent with the Big Bang. So what do you all say to carbon dating? Is it just erroneous? How so?
Keep in mind too that a Big Bang doesn't even come close to disproving God. In fact, it just begs the question, what caused the bang? That could easily be God couldn't it?
