David F. 11-19-04, 12:14 PM How is it they know how old this find is?
How do they know this is not just a modern monkey or one of the millions of recently extinct species? Clockwood 11-19-04, 01:07 PM Fossils can be dated in many ways. What strata it was found in plus the measurements of K-AR and uranium decay rates can determine its age. Just the fact that 14C is at background radiation levels shows it is over 50,000 years old. Wheatever this thing is, it is old. Just the fact that they found petrified remains instead of bones tells you that.

I simply hope to find an answer to my question, or a lead to where I might find it.
GRMorton and Rogero, you gentlemen are not welcome in this thread. Do not post within it.
Okay, way back when in my grade school days... yeah, we were using fire by then...:teeth:... I remember being taught that Carbon 14 dating had been verified by comparing C-14 dates to artifacts with documented and known ages. I seem to recall being similarly reassured in college. My question is this: what artifacts were used in this process? I guess more precisely, where did the artifacts originate from?
If all artifacts were from the same geographic area, even a fairly large one, that raises a red flag with me. It's a point that has bothered me for sometime and I'd just like to see how this was done. I'd appreciate any help or link you can give me.
Thanks!

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Reuters) Ethiopian scientists said on Tuesday they have discovered hominid fossil fragments dating from between 3.5 million and 3.8 million years ago in what could fill a crucial gap in the understanding of human evolution.
Ethiopian archaeologist Yohannes Haile Selassie said the find included several complete jaws and one partial skeleton and were unearthed in the Afar desert at Woranso-Mille, near where the famous fossil skeleton known as Lucy was found in 1974.
"This is a major finding that could fill a gap in human evolution," he told a news conference in Addis Ababa.
"The fossil hominids from the Woranso-Mille area sample a time period that is poorly known in human evolutionary study."
Researchers say the area, about 140 miles northeast of Addis, boasts the most continuous record of human evolution.
Last year, an international team of scientists unveiled the discovery of 4.1 million-year-old fossils in the region.

Jump to: navigation search Radiocarbon dating is an archeological method to tell how old something is.For this it uses the radioactive isotope carbon -14. It is also known as C-14 method because of this. The half life of C is about 5740 years. This makes it possible to tell the age of things that contain carbon, to about 60.000 years old; Dates obtained that way are usually written before present (Present is 1950). It is not possible to tell the age exactly, there is an error of 30-40 years. This short article can be made longer. Radiocarbon Dating
Radiocarbon (also called 14C) dating was invented in the late 1940s by Walter Libby, who was awarded the 1960 Nobel Prize for his discovery. The technique is typically used on organic remains, such as baskets, leather, dung, plant remains, amino acids, etc. With the development of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), beginning in the early 1970s, radiocarbon dating has become an increasingly useful way to measure time for archaeologists as well as scientists in other disciplines Although the chemistry and physics involved is complex, the basis for the technique is relatively simple. Common nitrogen in the atmosphere (14N) can be changed to radioactive carbon-14 (14C) when bombarded by cosmic rays. Both are taken up by plants and animals along with the nutrients they need to survive. When the plant or animal dies, this process ceases and the 14C present begins decreasing through radioactive decay. Since the rate of decay is a known constant, the ratio of 14C to stable carbon can be used to determine the age of the sample.
