Radiometric dating
'Radiometric dating ' is a technique used to date materials based on a knowledge of the decay rates of naturally occurring isotope s, and the current abundances. Various methods exist differing in accuracy, cost and applicable time scale.
Fundamentals of radiometric dating
All ordinary matter is made up of combinations of chemical element s, each with its own atomic number , indicating the number of proton s in the atomic nucleus . Additionally, elements may exist in different isotope s, with each isotope of an element differing only in the number of neutron s in the nucleus. A particular isotope of a particular element is called a nuclide . Some nuclides are inherently unstable. That is, at some random point in time, an atom of such a nuclide will be transformed into a different nuclide by the process known as radioactive decay . This transformation is accomplished by the emission of particles such as electron s (known as beta decay ) or alpha particle s.

    "Radiometric" dating?
The section " Short-range dating techniques " in this article contain interesting descriptions concerning various dating methods such as dendrochronology, "varve analysis", "hydration dating" or "obsidian dating", and thermoluminescence. Strictly speaking, however, those methods do not belong to the topic of Radiometric dating , the current title of this article. Therefore, in my opinion, one of three things should be done: (1) rewrite the section so as not to appear as overtly off-topic; (2) move those other techniques to their proper places and place a link in "See also" section; or (3) rename the article to reflect a more general topic such as "Dating techniques" or the like. What do others think about this? HYC 21:32, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Jump to: navigation search Radiometric dating (often called radioactive dating ) is a technique used to date materials, usually based on a comparison between the observed abundance of a naturally occurring radioactive isotope and its decay products, using known decay rates. It is the principal source of information about the absolute age of rocks and other geological features, including the age of the Earth itself, and can be used to date a wide range of natural and man-made materials. Among the best-known techniques are radiocarbon dating potassium-argon dating and uranium-lead dating . By allowing the establishment of geological timescales, it provides a significant source of information about the ages of fossils and the deduced rates of evolutionary change. Radiometric dating is also used to date archaeological materials, including ancient artifacts. Different methods of radiometric dating vary in the timescale over which they are accurate and the materials to which they can be applied.

    Environmental Radioactivity
The environmental radioactivity page is devoted to the subject of radioactive materials in the Human Environment. While some isotopes are only found on earth as a result of human activity (e.g. Sr and Tc), and some isotopes are only present due to natural processes (e.g. K), a few isotopes are present as a result of both natural processes and human activities (e.g. tritium). The concentration and location of some natural isotopes (such as U) can be affected by human activity. For more details of uranium and radium please see Uranium in the environment and radium in the environment.
    Overview
A review of the subject has been published by SCOPE in the report SCOPE 50 Radioecology after chernobyl. This report has seven main subsections.

The releases of man-made radioactivity (and NORM) into the environment can be divided into several classes.

All ordinary matter is made up of combinations of chemical elements , each with its own atomic number, indicating the number of protons in the atomic nucleus. Additionally, elements may exist in different isotopes, with each isotope of an element differing only in the number of neutrons in the nucleus. A particular isotope of a particular element is called a nuclide. Some nuclides are inherently unstable. That is, at some random point in time, an atom of such a nuclide will be transformed into a different nuclide by the process known as radioactive decay. This transformation is accomplished by the emission of particles such as electrons (known as beta decay) or alpha particles. While the moment in time at which a particular nucleus decays is random, a collection of atoms of a radioactive nuclide decays exponentially at a rate described by a parameter known as the half-life, usually given in units of years when discussing dating techniques. After one half-life has elapsed, one half of the atoms of the substance in question will have decayed. Many radioactive substances decay from one nuclide into a final, stable decay product (or "daughter") through a series of steps known as a decay chain. In this case, usually the half-life reported is the dominant (longest) for the entire chain, rather than just one step in the chain. Nuclides useful for radiometric dating have half-lives ranging from a few thousand to a few billion years.

    Radiometric Dating
Discovery of Radioactivity In 1896 Henri Becquerel and Marie Curie discovered that certain isotopes undergo spontaneous radioactive decay, transforming into new isotopes. Atoms of a parent radioactive isotope randomly decay into a daughter isotope. Over time the number of parent atoms decreases and the number of daughter atoms increases. Rutherford and Soddy (1902) discovered that the rate of decay of a radioactive isotope depends on the amount of the parent isotope remaining. Later it was found that half of the parent atoms occurring in a sample at any time will decay into daughter atoms in a characteristic time called the half-life. It was also learned that elements may have various numbers of neutrons in the nucleus, thereby changing the mass of each atom. These mass variants are called isotopes. Most carbon atoms have six protons and six neutrons for a mass of 12. A small percentage of carbon atoms have six protons and seven neutrons for a mass of 13 (carbon 13). Others have six protons and eight neutrons for a mass of 14 (carbon 14). Carbon 12 and carbon 13 are stable isotopes of carbon while carbon 14 is unstable making it useful for dating organic materials. Radiometric Dating The duration of a half-life is unique for each radioactive isotope. Some examples: the half-life for the decay of potassium 40 atoms into argon 40 atoms is about 1.3 billion years, the half-life for the decay of uranium 238 into lead 206 is about 4.5 billion years, and the half-life for the decay of carbon 14 into Nitrogen 14 is 5730 years.
