Radon Overview
Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas. You can't see radon. And you can't smell it or taste it. But it may be a problem in your home. Radon is estimated to cause many thousands of deaths each year. That's because when you breathe air containing radon, you can get lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that occurs naturally in most soils. Although you may not be aware of its presence, radon is a substance that poses the potential for lung cancer when a person is exposed to high levels over long periods of time. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that radon causes between 7,000 and 30,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the U.S., making it the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking. Radon exposure has also been shown to increase the risk of lung cancer among smoker. This fact sheet describes how radon forms in soils, how it infiltrates our living areas, how you can detect it, and what measures you can take to reduce your exposure to it.
What is Radon?
Radon-222 is a radioactive gas that is produced by the decay of uranium-238. which is found in varying degrees of concentration in most soils, in rock, and in ground water. As uranium-238 decays, radon-222 is formed. It, in turn, decays into various particles which can be inhaled in the air we breathe. Most of the time radon enters the lower levels of buildings through cracks in foundations or openings around pipes. Once inside, it is free to move about, and dissipates as it does so. For this reason, concentrations are usually higher in lower levels of buildings as compared to upper levels. After the energy crises of the 1970s, some experts argued that advances in building construction to conserve energy made it more likely that radon concentrations could be elevated in doors. Studies undertaken over the past decade however, have not substantiated this claim. Radon levels have not been found to be higher in well insulated homes. Thus concern about radon should not prevent anyone from taking steps to making living quarters more energy efficient.

Yuma HOME RADON SURVEYS PHASE I AND PHASE II SUMMARY PHASE I AND PHASE II SUMMARY The Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency (ARRA), in cooperation with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), initiated a program to measure radon concentrations in homes. The survey was conducted in response to the growing concern about potential health risks associated with indoor radon exposure. The primary goal of the home indoor radon survey was to determine the statewide distribution of radon in homes and identify areas of potentially high radon concentrations. During the winter and spring of 1987-88, ARRA and EPA conducted Phase I, a population-based home radon survey in Arizona. ARRA completed a follow-up, Phase II, during the winter and spring of 1988-89. The state legislature provided funds for the purchase of laboratory equipment, charcoal canisters, salaries for part-time employees for Phase I, and miscellaneous administrative expenses. Without these funds, the Agency could not have participated in the EPA survey or accomplished Phase II.

Surgeon General Releases National Health Advisory On Radon
U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona warned the American public about the risks of breathing indoor radon by issuing a national health advisory today. The advisory is meant to urge Americans to prevent this silent radioactive gas from seeping into their homes and building up to dangerous levels. Dr. Carmona issued the advisory during a two-day Surgeon General's Workshop on Healthy Indoor Environment. "Indoor radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the county," Dr. Carmona said. "It's important to know that this threat is completely preventable. Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-established venting techniques." Radon is an invisible, odorless and tasteless gas, with no immediate health symptoms, that comes from the breakdown of uranium inside the earth. Simple test kits can reveal the amount of radon in any building. Those with high levels can be fixed with simple and affordable venting techniques. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates, one in every 15 homes nationwide have a high radon level at or above the recommended radon action level of 4 picoCuries (pCi/L) per liter of air.

or broken links to webmaster@radonease.com Yes Virginia, There Is A Radon Problem (but only if you ignore it!) One in four homes in Central Virginia has elevated radon levels as compared to one in fifteen nationally. This is an alarming fact that is not going away. Since this odorless gas causes lung cancer second only to smoking, the only smart thing to do to protect your family, is to test your home to see if you are at risk. Testing is easy and inexpensive. Radon-Ease, Inc. uses the latest computerized short-term testing procedures and equipment for maximum accuracy and integrity with minimal turnaround time. Within 5 minutes the radon monitor is placed in your home and left to take hourly readings. When the monitor is retrieved at least 2 days later, the results are ready. You will know if you have a radon problem. While Radon-Ease does not offer radon mitigation, elevated radon levels are easily correctable with remediation which also typically controls moisture, mold and mildew. This is an added benefit for those who suffer from these allergies. The cost of remediation depends on how your home was built and other factors. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs, like painting or having a new hot water heater installed. The average cost ranges from $500.00 to about $2000.00.

March, 1988 Radon, first discovered in 1910, is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas formed from the radioactive decay of radium. Radium in turn is formed from uranium which is present to some extent in all rocks but is most common in those of granitic composition. It is not unusual for granites to contain as much as 3.9 parts per million uranium and .0013 parts per billion radium. When rocks weather, these radioactive elements find their way into the soil. Radon has a half-life of only 3.8 days; consequently, most of the gas decays harmlessly in the ground or atmosphere. Under certain circumstances, radon can migrate through the soil and enter homes in quantities sufficient to become a health hazard. In order for this to happen, there must be a source of radon, the soil must be permeable, and there must be a conduit into the home. The most common points of entry are porous basement walls, cracks in concrete floors or slabs, and openings around utility accesses. Certain home sites exhibit reasonably predictable radon problems. These are :
  • Homes built in areas where the rocks contain greater than normal amounts of uranium.

    • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that a person has a 1 percent (1 in 100) risk of developing cancer from life-long household use and consumption of water containing 20,000 pCi/L of dissolved radon, or breathing air containing 4 pCi/L of radon. This is considered a high risk when compared to the cancer risks from other contaminants in drinking water, which are in the range of 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 1 million.
    • The EPA recommended standard for radon in air is 4 pCi/L.

Over 17 years of experience goes into every radon system; making sure they function properly and look aesthetically appealing. Radon Specialties Co, Inc. is primarily a mitigation company. This web site will help homeowners to see what is involved during the installation process; various fans, fan covers, floor drain seals, sump covers, piping systems, sealed floor cracks, properly installed systems and a few not so properly installed. Our standard proposal form let's the homeowner select from what type of fan they like to the piping, so when the project is completed there are no surprises. Over 90% of our radon systems are located on the exterior of the home. If the system is painted to match the trim and placed in the least noticeable part of the home most owners prefer that to the attic system. Although attic systems hide the fan and piping they have a few drawbacks: Fan is running continuously in your attic, fire dampers needed in the piping system, condensation problems on the piping and fan on high humid days (water will drip on the floor or ceiling from the piping and possibly fan) and in time mold will develop on the piping. In 1998 as the public became more aware of radon, Radon Specialties Co, Inc was filmed installing a mitigation system in an older home in Cincinnati, Ohio by ABC Evening News. This short film clip helped viewers understand what is involved in properly installing a radon mitigation system.
