Robotics requires a working knowledge of electronics mechanics and software , and is usually accompanied by a large working knowledge of many subjects. A person working in the field is a roboticist Although the appearance and capabilities of robots vary vastly, all robots share the features of a mechanical, movable structure under some form of autonomous control. The structure of a robot is usually mostly mechanical and can be called a kinematic chain (its functionality being akin to the skeleton of the human body). The chain is formed of links (its bones), actuators (its muscles) and joints which can allow one or more degrees of freedom . Most contemporary robots use open serial chains in which each link connects the one before to the one after it. These robots are called serial robots and often resemble the human arm. Some robots, such as the Stewart platform , use closed parallel kinematic chains. Other structures, such as those that mimic the mechanical structure of humans, various animals and insects, are comparatively rare. However, the development and use of such structures in robots is an active area of research (e.g.

Welcome to the JPL Robotics website! Here you'll find detailed descriptions of the activities of the Mobility and Robotic Systems Section, as well as related robotics efforts around the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. We are approximately 100 engineers working on all aspects of robotics for space exploration and related terrestrial applications. We write autonomy software that drives rovers on Mars, and operations software to monitor and control them from Earth. We do the same for their instrument-placement and sampling arms, and are developing new systems with many limbs for walking and climbing. To achieve mobility off the surface, we are creating prototypes of airships to fly through the atmospheres of Titan and Venus, and drills and probes to go underground on Mars and Europa. To enable all of these robots to interact with their surroundings, we make them see with cameras and measure their environments with other sensors. Based on these measurements, the robots control themselves with algorithms also developed by our research teams. We capture the control-and-sensor-processing software in unifying frameworks, which enable reuse and transfer among our projects. In the course of developing this technology, we build real end-to-end systems as well as high-fidelity simulations of how the robots will work on worlds we are planning to visit.

Technorati Tags: Write Comment UGOBE Releases Details on Pleo Software Development Kit The News Hobbyiest Written by William Cox Friday, 01 February 2008
Today UGOBE has released initial details on the upcoming software development kit for Pleo. The Pleo Development Kit, or PDK, will allow users to create applications that will run on top of Pleo's "Life OS". The applications will be written in PAWN, which is ... ... a simple, typeless, 32-bit extension language with a C-like syntax.
The initial PDK release will focus on giving users access to Pleo's motors, sensors, and other low-level OS features. Future PDK releases will expose all of Pleo's Life OS to applications, creating a huge array of potential applications.
Applications will be allowed to override built-in Pleo behavior, which UGOBE calls "shadowing", to allow users to take total control of Pleo and his behavior.

Current Research Topics Our research group covers both Robotics and BioEngineering. Current topics of interest include: Neural Prosthetics and Brain-Machine Interfaces. A neural prosthesis as a ``direct brain interface'' that enables a human, via the use of surgically implanted electrode arrays and associated computer decoding algorithms, to control external electromechanical devices by pure thought alone. In this manner, some useful functions that have been lost through disease or accident can be partially restored. Patients who might benefit from such a prosthesis would include those with spinal cord sections or lesions, peripheral nerve disease, stroke to motor cortex, and ALS. Our lab collaborates with the laboratories of Prof. Richard Andersen and Prof. Y.C. Tai to develop neural prostheses and brain-machine interfaces. Our group focuses on these main issues:
  • Autonomously Moving Neural Recording Probes Neural decoding algorithms
Locomotion Rehabilitation.
