Gone are the days of a fearless Indiana Jones battling through the jungle in search of ancient treasures. Today's archaeologists are using high-tech tools - from NASA satellites to Google Earth - to do the hard work for them. If they haven't been destroyed or dismantled, many ancient structures were long ago enveloped by soil, water, sand, volcanic ash, or thick vegetation. Though they might not be obvious to the naked eye, archaeologists are learning how to spot them. Since the World War I, aerial photography from low-flying aircraft has been widely used. These images can help to pick out relics betrayed by unusual mounds, lines or disjointed landscapes. In other places, buried structures are completely invisible to the naked eye. But they still reveal clues to their whereabouts - just not with visible light.

Domestic Use of Spy Satellites To Widen
Law Enforcement Getting New Access To Secret Imagery
By Joby Warrick Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, August 16, 2007; Page A01 The Bush administration has approved a plan to expand domestic access to some of the most powerful tools of 21st-century spycraft, giving law enforcement officials and others the ability to view data obtained from satellite and aircraft sensors that can see through cloud cover and even penetrate buildings and underground bunkers. A program approved by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security will allow broader domestic use of secret overhead imagery beginning as early as this fall, with the expectation that state and local law enforcement officials will eventually be able to tap into technology once largely restricted to foreign surveillance.

I wonder how long before this one stops coming up? Answer : There are a few advantages to the satellite readings, mainly the more uniform global coverage and the fact that readings can be taken at different altitudes. However, it is an extremely complicated process which uses microwaves emitted by the oxygen in the atmosphere as a proxy for temperature. The complications arise from many things, including decay of the satellite orbits, splicing together and calibrating records from different instruments, trying to separate the signals by the layer of atmosphere they originate from, etc. It is a little ironic that the same people who distrust the

As originally conceived by Motorola, Iridium involved 77 LEO satellites. (Hence the name, as Iridium is element number 77.) The system now pared down to just 66 (= Dysprosium) satellites, each weighing 700 kg, together with six spares. Iridium telephone service became operational September 1998 However, the origin Iridium Satellite Phone system went into Charter 11 bankrupcy. In March/April 2001 the service was once more operational, after a group of investors purchased the existing satellite system, that had cost over 5 billion US $, for a mere US$25 million. The first recorded fictional depiction of a satellite being launched into orbit is a short story by Edward Everett Hale The Brick Moon . The story was serialized in The Atlantic Monthly , starting in 1869. The idea surfaces again in Jules Verne 's The Begum's Millions In 1903 Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857–1935) published Исследование мировых пространств реактивными приборами ( The Exploration of Cosmic Space by Means of Reaction Devices ), which is the first academic treatise on the use of rocketry to launch

Introduction
These pages form an index to useful web information discussing satellite constellations. You won't gain a complete picture of what any proposed constellation is capable of, or really in-depth technical details, but you will gain an idea of what the developments in this area are, where the industry and technology is headed - and you will pick up background knowledge of satellites along the way. These pages do not discuss stellar constellations beloved of night-sky watchers everywhere. This is not intended to be a guide to individual satellites in geostationary orbit . Nor is this one of those fashionable weblog things - a weblog is just a chonological most-recent-first diary where old entries are left unchanged, making less sense over time as context fades and links break, while this tries to be continually useful by updating text and links when possible although it's really something of a cluttered mess.

More and more often, it will become necessary to ascertain one's precise position in space and time in a reliable manner. This will be possible with the GALILEO satellite radio navigation system, an initiative launched by the European Union and the European Space Agency. This worldwide system will ensure complementarity with the current GPS system. Satellite radio navigation is an advanced technology. It is based on the emission from satellites of signals indicating the time extremely precisely. This enables any individual to determine his or her position or the location of any moving or stationary object (e.g. a vehicle, a ship, or a herd of cattle, etc.) to within one metre thanks to a small cheap individual receiver.
