    How Semiconductors are Made T he process of manufacturing semiconductors, or integrated circuits (commonly called ICs, or chips) typically consists of more than a hundred steps, during which hundreds of copies of an integrated circuit are formed on a single wafer. Generally, the process involves the creation of eight to 20 patterned layers on and into the substrate, ultimately forming the complete integrated circuit. This layering process creates electrically active regions in and on the semiconductor wafer surface.
    Wafer Production
    The first step in semiconductor manufacturing begins with production of a wafera thin, round slice of a semiconductor material, usually silicon. In this process, purified polycrystalline silicon, created from sand, is heated to a molten liquid. A small piece of solid silicon (seed) is placed on the molten liquid, and as the seed is slowly pulled from the melt the liquid cools to form a single crystal ingot. The surface tension between the seed and molten silicon causes a small amount of the liquid to rise with the seed and cool. The crystal ingot is then ground to a uniform diameter and a diamond saw blade cuts the ingot into thin wafers.

    Organic semiconductors span from quantum mechanics to human disease. For example, like Schroedinger's Cat, Darwin's deaf white kitty illustrates a macro quantum phenomenon. This is strong electron-phonon coupling in potent sound-absorbing organic semiconductors such as inner-ear melanin. Likewise, these materials promise exciting new technology such as light-emitting diode ( OLED ) displays, as well as literal "printed" circuits. Finally, the conducting polymer melanin figures in (e.g.) melanoma, deafness, and Parkinson's disease.
    Early History Of High-Conductivity Polymer "Blacks"
    In a series of papers in 1963, Australians DE Weiss and coworkers reported high conductivity in iodine-"doped" oxidized polypyrrole blacks. They achieved a conductivity of 1S/cm. These papers also describe the effects of iodine doping on conductivity, the conductivity type (n or p), and electron spin resonance studies on polypyrrole. Likewise, these authors noted an Australia patent application (5246/61, June 5, 1961) for conducting polypyrrole. Unfortunately, this germinal work was "lost" and went uncited by later workers. A decade later, we also achieved a high-conductivity state, but rather differently. This was the "ON" state of a bistable switch using DOPA Melanin, a mixed copolymer of polyacetylene, polypyrrole, and polyacetylene. While well-known at the time, in a major journal (

        Semiconductor History
        Memory chips have been called the crude oil of the twenty-first century. They are used in a wide variety of electronic applications from children's toys to sophisticated communication satellites. The current generation of memory chip (64 Mb) is capable of storing 3,355 pages of text on a piece of about the size of a dime.
        What is a Semiconductor?
        A number of elements are classified as semiconductors including silicon, zinc, and germanium. These elements have the ability to conduct electrical current, and they can be regulated in the amount of their conductivity. Silicon is the most widely used semiconductor material because it is easily obtained. Silicon is basically extracted from sand. It has been used for centuries to make cast iron, bricks, and pottery. In ultra-pure form, the controlled addition of minute amounts of certain impurities (called dopants ) alters the atomic structure of the silicon. The silicon can then be made to act as a conductor or a nonconductor, depending upon the polarity of an electrical charge applied to it. Hence, the generic term
