Seti I
by Jimmy Dunn
Seti I was the father of perhaps Egypt's greatest rulers, Ramesses II , and was in his own right also a great leader. His birth name is Seti Mery-en-ptah, meaning "He of the god Seth, beloved of Ptah. To the Greeks, he was Sethos I, and his throne name was Men-maat-re, meaning "Eternal is the Justice of Re". He ruled Egypt for 13 years (though some Egyptologists differ on this matter, giving him a reign of between 15 and 20 years) from 1291 through 1278 BC. In order to rectify the instability under the Amarna kings, he early on set a policy of major building at home and a committed foreign policy. Seti was the son of Ramesses I and his queen, Sitre. He probably ruled as co-regent, evidenced by an inscription on a statue from Medamud. Seti married into his own military caste. His first wife was Tuya, who was the daughter of a lieutenant of charioteers. His first son died young, but his second son was Ramesses II. There was also a daughter, Tia, and a second daughter named Henutmire, who would become a minor queen of Ramesses II. This was truly a great period in Egypt, and perhaps the greatest in regards to art and culture. In the building projects that Seti I undertook, the quality of the reliefs and other designs were probably never surpassed by later rulers. He is responsible for beginning the great Hypostyle Hall in the

We may never know if we rely on space travel distances between the stars are unimaginably vast, and our most advanced ideas for space rockets , such as light propulsion nuclear propulsion solar sails and matter-antimatter engines , are many years away from becoming reality.

Using sensitive radio receiving equipment to Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. Resources, links and contact details.
    http://www.jsquared.co.uk/seti-uk/
Welcome to the web site of the UK branch of the SETI League.  - Last update This site is intended to complement the main SETI League Web Site which, although giving a wealth of useful information, can tend to be a little US-centric at times. We aim to provide information which is of specific interest to members of the SETI league in the UK, or to non-members who are interested in our Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence.
What is SETI, and why in the UK?
SETI - The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence is an attempt to obtain evidence of intelligent life outside our Solar System. There are many projects pursuing this goal, but we are focusing our efforts looking for narrow-band radio transmissions in the 1GHz to 10GHz region, and with the majority of stations looking at the frequency of neutral hydrogen - 1420MHz. The SETI League is a global organization, and this is essential for the search because not all of the sky can be viewed from any country. A signal seen in the UK at a particular point in the sky will be visible for confirmation on the East coast of the USA 5 hours later. It is a function of the SETI League to co-ordinate this activity.
    Why a UK regional page?

    Optical SETI
At the University of California, Berkeley Optical SETI is the search for visible or infrared signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. There are two optical SETI programs at UC Berkeley; both searches are supported by The Seti Institute and The Planetary Society . Other optical SETI searches are in the works at Harvard Lick Observatory and Columbus Many of the recent developments in optical SETI have stemmed from the SETI Institute sponsored "SETI Science and Technology Working Group", a team of international scientists preparing a plan for new directions for SETI searches and systems over the years 2000-2020. Members of the optical SETI sub-group include Eric Becklin, John Carlstrom, Sandy Faber, Giovanni Fazio, Paul Horowitz, Mike Lampton, Larry Lesyna, Geoff Marcy, Seth Shostak, Charles Townes, and Dan Werthimer (chair). One of the two seaches at Berkeley is a search for laser signals that are on continuously, or at least a large fraction of the time. This search, directed by Geoff Marcy, is a 1000 star program to search for ultra narrow band signals in the visible. They plan to search though thousands of extremely high resolution spectra for very sharp lines (lines which are not thermally broadened). Much of the data has already been taken by Marcy and Butler in their ongoing planet search , and more data is coming in all the time, mostly from Lick and Keck observatories, and some from the Southern Hemisphere search for planets in Australia.

SETI@home looking for more volunteers By Robert Sanders, Media Relations BERKELEY Since SETI@home launched eight years ago, the project based at the University of California, Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory has signed up more than 5 million interested volunteers and boasts the largest community of dedicated users of any Internet computing project: 170,000 devotees on 320,000 computers. Yet, new and more sensitive receivers on the world's largest radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and better frequency coverage are generating 500 times more data for the project than before. The SETI@home software has been upgraded to deal with this new data as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) enters a new era and offers a new opportunity for those who want to help find other civilizations in the universe. "The next generation SETI@home is 500 times more powerful then anything anyone has done before," said project chief scientist Dan Werthimer. "That means we are 500 times more likely to find ET than with the original SETI@home."

Amateur SETI Looking for company... A back-bencher US senator decided to get himself some publicity in 1991 and chose NASA's SETI ( Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence ) program as an easy target. Saying it was a waste of money to look for little green men , he got the program canceled. This occurred despite the fact that the project, the High Resolution Microwave Survey , was a thoroughly refereed program with support across the scientific spectrum and its budget was actually very modest. In the wake of this sad affair, non-governmental and amateur programs have arisen to continue the effort. Most of the SETI efforts rely on public donations to fund at least some of what the NASA could have done. This included the Phoenix project that rose from the ashes of the NASA program.
