I am also working on a few new features to take advantage of the new client and this will be posted at a later date. There is one field in X-SETI (Doppler Shift) that will not be filled in with the new version of the client becuase the client no longer outputs this information. I will remove this field in a subsequent version. When running under Expect, this version of X-SETI depends on an option (-verbose) which is not documented in the UNIX client man page. It should be noted that X-SETI 0.8.2 will NOT work properly with version 1.x clients. Since the 1.x clients will soon be disallowed by the seti organization, I did not see the need to include code to make this new version of X-SETI work with both clients or to foolproof it against use with the old client. X-SETI is a simple Tk-based GUI front end for the UNIX SETI@home client. X-SETI optionally uses Expect to communicate with the client. This requires Expect be installed on the target system along with Tcl/Tk, but allows X-SETI to handle all interaction with the client, including account setup and login dialogs. As David Anderson, the SETI@Home lead who now works at United Devices, revealed at his speech at the O'Reilly P2P Conference yesterday, the project has 2.7 million users in 226 countries. "We've accumulated 500,000 years of CPU time. Our rate of computing is 25 teraflops, which is twice the speed of IBM's ASCII White, the fastest supercomputer in the world). We've analyzed 45 terabytes of data." They handle all this with a staff of three to five people. SETI@Home is the most popular and well-known distributed computing project on the Net, but it was initially embraced with open arms by the larger Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence project. "When we asked the SETI Institute for money, not only didn't they give us money, they didn't even like the idea of the project. They didn't think it would work with computers connected with modems. They thought we would get hacked and be used to download viruses, which would discredit the project. They were afraid some overzealous user would write their own analysis program and claim alien contact, thus discrediting the project." Anderson warns other distributed computing developers to expect a similar fate at the hands of whatever establishment they're dealing with. "IT managers feel threatened by paradigm shifts. The only way to counteract this is to have success stories. Don't set expectations too high. Make sure no disasters happen."

SETI@Home Service The SETI@Home service is a Windows NT service that controls a SETI@Home command-line client. Since it is implemented as a service, it is only usable on systems running Windows NT or Windows 2000. The goal of the SETI@Home Service is to help maximize your system's SETI@Home work-unit output. It uses the command-line client, which elimiates processing cycles that would otherwise be lost to displaying graphics. As a further boost, even the client's text output is disabled. The client is run as a background process, so that it can continually work without impacting anything else you may want to do on your machine. But the main benefit to running the client as a service is that it runs the client as long as your machine is booted. You no longer need to leave yourself logged on to process work units. If your machine is rebooted while you are away from it for any reason (eg: power outage), the SETI@Home Service will resume processing immediately after your machine reboots. A third way the SETI@Home Service helps you is with network outages. If your network connection happens to be down when the SETI@Home client completes a unit, it will quite likely terminate. This can leave you without any SETI processing for an extended period of time until you come back to the machine and notice the client's window is gone. The SETI@Home Service automaticly detects termination of the SETI@Home client and restarts it. A fourth way the SETI@Home Service helps you is with its handy built-in web server, which can report client status to any connected PC via your web-browser.
