The three-toed sloth is a gentle herbivore. Its slow movements, together with its cryptic coloration, protect it from its major predator, the harpy eagle.
Viewed up close, the sloth appears as a hallucination, an ecosystem unto itself that softly vibrates with hundreds of exoparasites. The animal's mottled appearance is due in part to a blue-green alga that lives symbiotically within its hollow hairs. A dozen varieties of arthropods burrow beneath its fur; a single sloth weighing a mere ten pounds may be home to over a thousand beetles. The life cycles of these insects are completely tied to the daily round of the sloth. With its excruciatingly slow metabolism, the sloth defacates only once a week. The animal climbs down from the canopy, excavates a small depression at the foot of the tree, voids its feces, and then returns back up. Mites, beetles, and even a few species of moth leap off the sloth, deposit an egg in the dung, and climb back onto their host for a ride up the tree. The eggs germinate, and in one way or another, the young insects find another sloth to call home. Why would this animal go down to the base of the tree, exposing itself to all forms of terrestrial predation, when it could just as easily deficate from the treetops?

Choloepus hoffmanni ): SPECIES ACCOUNT
GEOGRAPHIC RANGE
The extinct West Indian sloths lived in the West Indies, in island countries including Haiti. Living two-toed sloth species reside in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.
HABITAT
The earliest West Indian sloths were arboreal, living in trees. Later species lived both on the ground and in trees. Most two-toed sloths live in trees in the rainforest, an area where there is much rain throughout the year. Sloths also range in cloud forests, forests in high altitude areas that are kept moist by the clouds at that height.
DIET
West Indian sloths probably ate leaves. Two-toed sloths are herbivores, eating mostly leaves and twigs. They also eat fruit. Since sloths move from tree to tree, their diet is as varied as the trees they live in.

Slow moving, they actually have blue or green algae which grows in their fur, providing the perfect camouflage. Sloths live in Central and South America. They are mostly nocturnal and eat leaves, blossoms and berries, sometimes stripping entire trees. At birth, a baby three-toed sloth is only 2 inches long. She studied and filmed extensively at the Aviarios Sloth Rescue Center in Costa Rica, as well as in the wild rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama. "There is very little information available about sloths," she says. "And much of what has been printed is incorrect." Early in 2005 Jeri and photographer Bill Hatcher received a grant from the National Geographic Expedition Council to film a species of sloth that was just described in 2001. The three-toed pygmy sloth is found only on a tiny remote island off the coast of Panama. During the expedition she captured some priceless footage of a pygmy sloth entering the water and swimming with surprising grace and poise. This behavior had been theorized by scientists but never previously documented. Hanging with the Sloth is a delightful, slow-motion romp with the world's most charming mammal. Slow of movement and fond of sleep, this animal has long been considered dim-witted, primitive and noteworthy only in that it survived at all. It didn't help to be named for one of the Seven Deadly Sins. This engaging documentary, filmed in Costa Rica and Panama, dispels that image and introduces you to a unique, intriguing and extraordinary animal. Prepare to fall in love.

by Jacalyn Giacalone, Ph.D. Other than howler monkeys, not many mammal species on BCI can live and flourish on a steady diet of tree leaves, but sloths do very well on this food source, provided they are the right kinds of leaves. Tree leaves tend to be coarse and difficult to digest, full of tough cellulose and protected by toxic chemicals produced by trees to ward off their predators. In this war between plants and the animals that would eat them, sloths have succeeded through adaptations that enable them to be leaf-eaters, or folivores. Furthermore, they do their leaf-eating on the crowns of mature trees, only infrequently coming down to the ground, so they are called arboreal folivores. The story of their adaptation to the canopy of the forest and to leafy food supplies is an unusual one. Sloths have long, shaggy fur that they groom carefully every day. The mother sloth (facing to the left) was clinging to a tree trunk and carrying a baby near her neck (see the small face?).

Toe Each His Own : Growing up, Mike Connor always wanted a pony. Now he wants this sloth. No dice. Send in the Sloths By Mike Connor O nce upon a time, nature shows were hypnotic fare. In subdued tones and scientific language, the usual deep baritone of the narrator detailed the often gruesome struggle for life: lions hunting their prey; jackals feasting on their kill. Hours slipped away with nobody even noticing the bowl was cashed. These days, Animal Planet is just a vehicle for "Funniest Home Videos" shows and zany jump-cut malarkey like the Crocodile Hunter. Granted, it's my favorite show, but still, the antics to which these shows resort to hold a kid's attention are downright dizzying. Enter Steven Karlin, executive director of Wildlife Associates. At a presentation for the Museum of Natural History on Saturday, Karlin will bring the real deal to Santa Cruz: an African crested porcupine, an arctic fox, a golden eagle, a baby American alligator and a two-toed sloth. Whether he's presenting at marketing seminars or elementary school assemblies, Karlin uses a decidedly holistic approach to teach people about the natural systems on which all life depends. This weekend, he will arrive in town with a bunch of animals and a two-toed sloth named Hershey
