Welcome to my project page! What am I studying? I am studying evolutionary biology and I became interested in banana slugs because I feel that they are good organisms to study sexual conflict between hermaphroditic mating partners. My banana slugs are just so damn cute! Below I have a mating video and pictures of slug penises. All part of my PhD thesis... What is sexual conflict? The big picture is that there is often a conflict of interests between mating partners because each individual will differ in how it can maximize it's fitness (ie. how many babies it can make in its lifetime). For example, after a male and female mate, the female may want to mate again because she may benefit from gaining sperm from other males. But, from the point of view of the male that she just mated with, her remating is a very bad thing because that means that she will not fertilize all her eggs with his sperm, but with another male's sperm as well. This is an example of a conflict of interests where the female wants to remate, but the male does not want her to. This is a mating pair. Because their genital opening in near their head, they line up in the yin-yang position and stay like this for hours.

Slugs
Nudibranchs Description

Slugs are mollusks, related to oysters and clams. Slugs are referred to a "naked snails," as they possess no shell. Slugs lay clusters of translucent, pearly-shaped eggs under debris or buried beneath the soil surface. They can lay between 20 to 100 eggs several times per year, taking approximately two years for slugs to reach maturity. The gray garden slug, Peroceras reticulatum , is the slug generally encountered in Illinois. It is approximately 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long, ranging in color from pale yellow, lavender, to purple. In addition, they are covered with black or brown spots and mottling. Less commonly encountered is the great gray garden slug, Limax maximus . It is up to 7 inches long and is yellow-gray to brown with black mottling. Click on image for larger version

They are similar to snails, but have a raised mantle on the back instead of the familiar shell. Slugs overwinter mostly as eggs, but adult slugs can survive Maine winters, if they hide in areas protected from freezing. The gray garden slug is the most common and most destructive. This 3/4 inch pest varies in color from whitish yellow to nearly black, with brown specks and mottling . T he spotted garden or giant slug can range from 3 to 7 inches long. These slugs become lighter in color as they age. The yellowish mantle usually has three rows of black spots that continue to the end of the body. The species is found primarily on islands and along the coast, but it is becoming more common inland. The tawny garden slug seldom reaches 4 inches long. It is usually recognized by its yellow mantle, and lighter spots on a yellow body. This type is less common than the gray garden or spotted garden slugs. The approximately 100 eggs laid by male or female (slugs are hermaphroditic) gray garden slugs are about 1/8 inch in diameter. A 4 inch slug may produce eggs up to a 1/4 inch in diameter. It takes about 100 days for slug eggs to hatch at 32° to 40° F, but only 10 days in warmer weather, as in late May. Under ideal conditions with damp, warm weather, the life cycle of a slug could be as short as three months.

    Slugs
In North Carolina many types of ornamental and vegetable plants are damaged by slugs. Slugs are similar to snails but differ from snails in that they do not have a hard protective spiral shell. There are many species of slugs in this state which vary in appearance and habits.
    Size
The size varies from less than one-half inch to more than four inches in length and from one-eight to one-half inches in width.
    Color
The color varies from ash-gray or yellowish-gray to black. Some are the same basic color throughout the body; others are mottled. Immature slugs resemble adults but are smaller and usually lighter in color.
    Eggs
Eggs are gelatinous and watery in appearance. They range in size from 1/8 inch in diameter to almost 1/4 inch and vary in shape from round to oval. In the colder parts of NC, only the eggs overwinter. Eggs are resistant to summer heat, excessive moisture and prolonged drying. They are laid in clusters of about 25 on the soil surface in concealed moist locations.
    Life Cycle
In spring eggs hatch and young slugs appear. They resemble adults but may be lighter in color and smaller. Most slugs become mature and lay eggs in the fall of the first year of their life. If not killed by cold weather, they may live for two or more years. Slugs are active at night. Their silver-colored slime trails are quite noticeable each morning.

A special gland in the foot secretes mucus (a slimy fluid) that helps the slug move. The slug leaves a trail of slime behind them when they move.

Banana slugs. We see their stylized faces everywhere in Santa Cruz - on posters, T-shirts, and textbook covers - and that's when we're not confronting them face-to-face in all their gooey splendor. So what are they? Where do they come from? Are your prize begonias in trouble if these slick yellow critters are oozing about in the vicinity? And how do they ... get it on? All good questions. Some of the answers are known, others remain a mystery. What we do know about banana slugs, according to Aptos authority Alice Bryant Harper, is that they belong to the class Gastropoda ("stomach feet"), putting them in with other land slugs, sea slugs, and snails. And they belong to the genus Ariolimax, a group of land slugs that range from the Salinas Valley north to Alaska and east to the Sierra Nevada. The species question is under debate. Some folks think that there is only one, A. columbianus , throughout the range; others claim the presence of a second, A. dolichyphallus

    Introduction
Florida has a depauperate slug fauna, having only three native species which belong to three different families. Eleven species of exotic slugs have been intercepted by USDA and DPI quarantine inspectors, but only one is known to be established. Some of these, such as the gray garden slug ( Deroceras reticulatum Limax maximus L.), and tawny garden slug ( Limax flavus L.), are very destructive garden and greenhouse pests. Therefore, constant vigilance is needed to prevent their establishment. Some veronicellid slugs are becoming more widely distributed (Dundee 1977). The Paraguayan Angustipes Veronicella ameghini (Gambetta) has been found at several Florida localities (Dundee 1974, Gillmore 1982). This velvety black slug should be looked for under boards and debris in vacant lots and cemeteries. Slugs are not commonly seen or collected because they are active mostly at night and inconspicuous during the day. In Spanish, they are called "babosas" from the verb "babear" (to drool), because of the copious amount of mucus they secrete. Slugs should be preserved in 75% isopropyl alcohol. It is best to drown them in water overnight in a covered container without air pockets so the bodies will be extended. After drowning they should be washed under running water to remove excess mucus before placing in preservative. Notes on the color of the mucus secreted by the living slug would be helpful in identification.

Slugs can be very damaging pests in moist, shady gardens. They feed on the leaves of many plants, especially seedlings. Later in the season they can feed on ripening fruits and vegetables. Slugs are especially numerous during rainy seasons and in well-irrigated gardens. If slugs are abundant one year, it does not mean they will be as common the following season; the relative number of slugs in a given season depends on how moist the growing conditions are.
    Identification
Slugs are best described as snails without shells. They are a type of mollusk, related to clams and oysters. Slugs are soft bodied, generally brownish or grayish, with eye stalks. They vary in size from 1/4 inch to two inches or longer. Slugs leave a silvery slime trail that they secrete as they move. Slugs use file-like mouthparts to rasp and chew plant tissue. Because of their mouthparts, they create irregularly shaped holes. Feeding damage can be cosmetic, however extensive feeding can result in plant stress or even death.

    Brain Slugs

Brain slugs are an parasitic, invertebrate species native to the Brain Slug Planet. Brain slugs feed on cognitive energy in the form of the Alpha and Delta brainwaves. They attach themselves to their victims by using their adhesive slime to the scalp. The host's personality becomes totally supressed and their body is controlled by the slug. Brain slugs have a single, rudimentary eye that can only see the heat signatures of their prey, but they gain the use of their host's senses when they begin feeding. The slugs, as a species, are telepathically linked but prone to communicate with one another through their hosts.
Brain slugs are a fairly intelligent race. As primitive life forms they had a hard time establishing a society, but the assimilation of a DOOP survey crew allowed them to work together more effectively. Using their hosts' bodies, they set to work building a city with an important stop-over point on the way to many of the Universe's most popular tourist destinations. The spaceport the brain slugs built was a brilliant ploy to infest countless unknowing visitors on their vacations. The assimilated individuals return to their home planets and attempt to assimilate others by placing other slugs on their heads or convincing them to go to the brain slug homeworld.
The slugs will attack their hosts by crawling up their bodies until they reach the cranium. The only sure way to prevent infestation is to wear a helmet on the Brain Slug homeworld and use a garlic shampoo when in close proximity to an infested individual.
