By Mariano Iglesias aka "mariano" This behavior lets your models act as slug-based models, useful for generating Search Engine friendly URLs. Easy to install, and easy to configure. This behavior will let you create unique slugs for every record added (or updated) to any of your models you attach it to. This is particularly useful to create SEO links out of, for example, a table of articles. Instead of seeing those ugly /articles/view/4 URLs, use the Sluggable Behavior and easily accept URLs such as /articles/view/my-seo-friendly-article. It handles the slug creation, slug collision, and allows you to specify different settings such as the separator to use, maximum width of a slug, among other useful parameters.

Ugh! Slugs! Pesticide-free Solutions to Slug Problems Article in PDF Most people would agree that it's not fun to find slugs in your garden. They have what seems to be an endless appetite for plants you're trying to grow. They're also squishy and slimy. Don't give in to disgust, though, or pesticides. There are effective pesticide- free techniques for dealing with slugs so that they don't get out of control in your garden. What Kind of Slug Is This? Does it Matter? There are about 40 different kinds of slugs living in the U.S., but only about half of them are considered pests. Most of the pest slugs are species that people accidentally brought to this country from other parts of the world.(1) Common pest slugs in the Pacific Northwest include the European black slug, the gray garden slug, and the banded slug.(1-3) Managing the different species of slugs is similar, so you don't need to decide which kind of slug you've got in your garden. Benefits Slugs have important ecological roles. They help cycle organic matter, which in turns helps to build healthy, rich soil.(1) They also are food for wildlife, including raccoons, possums, garter snakes,(1) toads, turtles, and birds.(2) Signs of Slug Damage Slugs are most active at night; often you won't see them in your garden during the day unless it's cool and overcast. You'll see their silvery slime trails, though, and also see damaged plants. They chew large, ragged holes in leaves. They can also eat entire young plants, so that the plants completely disappear.(3)

Experimental studies on the control of slug flow by interfacial forces in silylated glass capillaries
Colloids and Surfaces Volume 55 Pages 257-270
Abstract
The effect of a solid surface on the resistance of a three phase contact line to motion was investigated in silylated, cylindrical and horizontal glass capillaries. The solid surface wetting property was modified by silylation procedures and prewetting with water or dodecane. To compare the calculated and measured values of different pressure drops the linear flow velocity and the dynamic contact angles were measured as a function of the hydrostatic pressure difference (driving force). The wetting heterogeneity of capillary surfaces, caused by water-prewetting and different silylation procedures, was suggested to be responsible for the capillary pressure drop which could not be described by the Laplace term alone.

Slugs © 2000. Ralph E. Berry, Department of Entomology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. Several species of slugs feed on potato, particularly West of the Cascade Mountains. The gray garden slug, Agriolimax reticulatum (Mollusca), is the most common. This slug is about 6 to 8 mm long and varies in color from gray to brown. All stages of slugs cause injury by rasping the tissues from the leaf surfaces. They can be associated with their injury by the trail of white shinny slime they leave behind. Eggs, which are yellowish-white and about 2 mm in diameter, are laid in clusters under clods, under boards, in weedy areas, or trash. Eggs are laid year around in cool moist conditions, but the majority are laid in late summer or fall before the rains begin. I know I'm not supposed to, but I pity Michelle Malkin. Really, I do. Punditry is a game of incentives, encouragement, luck. You write a hundred articles before striking paydirt with one. That zeitgeisty dispatch activates an eruption of applause and adulation, so you try to repeat it. Soon enough, you've got a niche, a style, a persona. The lucky ones, among whom I include myself, find their path opening towards responsible, serious commentary. The sort of articles that allow us to wake up, yawn, look in the mirror, and feel good about what we see. And then there are the unlucky ones, the Michelle Malkins, who achieve acceptance through hatred and venom, and find themselves groping down the darkest path to political success. Right now, the dark-haired, lashy, Ann Coulter understudy is happily wrapped in one of her typical controversies: a crew of students at UC Santa Cruz, my alma mater, protested some military recruiters, and Malkin got hold of a press release with their personal contact information a poorly conceived inclusion on the students' part, but then, these are undergraduates, not trained media flacks. Rather than calling and speaking to them herself, which is what members of the press are supposed to use such releases for, Malkin published their personal information on her website, prompting her hordes of orcish mouth-breathers to brandish their pitchforks and inundate the unsuspecting students with death threats (some of which you can read

Controlling Slugs and Snails in Your Garden
March 13, 1999
Ahhhhh! The joys of springtime abound... The new blossoms forming on your perennials, sunshine, longer days,........ slugs!
The slug... your adversary
Slugs may be a very serious problem to you if you live in the Northwest or other moisture laden areas of the country. A single lawn prawn can successfully remove an entire row of seedlings from your garden in no time at all. He can turn a perfect plant into swiss cheese over night and return to the safety of his hideaway, leaving you to wonder what happened...... As slugs wander about, doing their evil little slug deeds, they leave behind them a trail of slime which amounts to nothing less than a road sign for themselves and every other slug to follow to the grand feast. To make the situation even worse, slugs are hermaphrodites, they all have male and female reproductive systems. Yes, they can mate with themselves, and in the privacy of their own abode, each slug will produce two to three dozen eggs several times a year. The egg clusters look like little piles of whitish jelly BB sized balls. They will hatch in anywhere from 10 days to three weeks or longer, and these sluglingss can mature to adulthood in as little as six weeks. Destroy the eggs... wherever you find them.
Slugs may live for several years, getting larger with proportionately larger appetites each year. Now, do you

Pest control
CB is gone, off visiting different cities to investigate postdoc opportunities. Rather than dwell on it (OH MY GOOOOD IT SUUUCKS), I will entertain you with a story from my latest workplace.
I write and edit materials about plant conservation for a Very Important Institution. We have gardeners on-site to manage some of our exhibits, and yes, I'm being vague in the hopes it will take you longer than 30 milliseconds to figure out where I'm employed.
Just after Christmas, one of the staff gardeners let out a bloodcurdling screech from the shed where he kept his tools. Moments later, he came into the office looking several shades paler than normal.
For background information, this is a nutria. It looks cute, but it's actually slightly more evil than European starlings. Or your worst relative, in case you are a normal person who doesn't understand why starlings are the spawn of Satan over here. Nutria are an invasive species who happen to be champion eaters, so they inflict irreparable damage on our native wetlands as they munch their way across the United States. This is why you can find all sorts of interesting information online from people who hate nutria...like this handy book of recipes
Anyway, our gardeners hate nutria. Haaaaate. And while we environmentalists are all supposed to be hippy-dippy treehugger types, the truth is that we get downright pissed when invasive species show up and throw one more wrench into our sputtering ecosystems. Apparently, we aren't too good at keeping quiet, because someone figured out that our group is anti-nutria.

Slugs and Snails in the Garden
Slugs and snails can sometimes cause a lot of damage Summary: Slugs and snails can be important pests in the garden and landscape. They are most common in warm and wet climates but snails can be a problem in warm and dry climates as well. These critters feed on plants by shredding tender leaves and flowers. Jack DeAngelis, PhD OSU Ext. Entomologist (ret.) This page will help you get rid of slugs and snails from your garden and landscape. Slugs and snails are terrestrial (land) mollusks , related to clams and shellfish. Snails have an external shell while slugs do not (see pictures below). Both are garden pests in wet climates where they eat plants, especially tender leaves. In the US slug and snails are most important on the west coast and in southern states . Plant damage is usually irregular in shape sometimes accompanied by distinctive "slime trails" that mark where the critters crawled the night before. Outside the garden, slugs and snails actually do beneficial things. They recycle organic matter helping to build soils and they are important prey for other wildlife. Inside the garden and landscape, however, slugs and snails can do considerable damage and often must be controlled. Grey garden slug (about 1/2" long).

Banana Slugs and European Black Slugs The Banana Slug ( Ariolimax columbianus) and the European Black Slug ( Arion ater ) are two members of the Class Gastropoda found in the Northwest United States. They travel on a muscular foot leaving a trail of slime, which serves several purposes. They have on a dorsal hump, a radula with 27,000 teeth-like structures, and a mantle with a cavity. For a detailed look at a slug's anatomy, go to http://tammyslug.com/love-anatomy.html The Banana Slug can grow up to 12 inches (26 centimeters) and is the world's second largest slug. The European Slug's length may range from 2.8 to 6 inches. The coloration of the Banana Slug may be a bright yellow, slate-green, or white with or without black spots. The European Black Slug, which is not native to the United States, may be black, brown, or reddish in color. This slug can be easily identified by the numerous ridges and grooves on its dorsal side.
