There are only three species of slugs native to northeast Florida. Of the three, Philomyus carolinianus (Bosc, 1802), is by far the rarest - usually restricted to wooded areas, where it associates with rotting logs . The other two species are relatively common and survive quite nicely in the lawns and gardens of urban populated areas. Boiled Sea-Slugs.
(Catching sea-slugs).
When a man wants to take sea-slugs, he first goes for a thin shaft which is used by the salmon fishers. He takes two thin cedar sticks, each one a short span long and a little thinner than the little finger, flat on one side and he takes cedar-bark and splits it in narrow strips. The two cedar-sticks are to be hooks at the end of the sea-slug spear. He puts these near the end of the harpoon-shaft, and ties them on with split long strips of cedar-bark. When it is finished, it is this way: [A simple illustration is omitted, of spear with hook lashed on end]. Then he waits for it to be calm at low tide. When it is calm, he launches his sea-slug-gathering canoe. He takes his sea-slug-gathering paddle, and his knife for cutting off the heads of sea slugs, and also the stick for catching sea-slugs. Then he paddles to a place where he knows there are many sea-slugs. He looks down into the water; and when he sees a place where there are many of them together, he takes his stick for catching sea-slugs and pushes it down into the water. He pushes the hook-end under the sea-slugs. Then it comes up lying crosswise over his canoe. He takes the sea-slug, takes his knife, and cuts off the neck. Then he squeezes out the insides, and he throws it down hard into his canoe, saying as he is throwing it down

I would really appreciate learning more about what makes up the slime that envelops slugs, or even more about slugs in general. I have handled more than my share of the lovely little beasties, (I have a water turtle that is possessed with a penchant for slug souffl©,) and the residual slime left on my fingers is tougher to scrub off than super glue.
There's a similar depiction (in much better resolution, detail, and color) in the film "Microcosmos" that is just absolutely stunning. It's actually erotic in a really odd sort of way.
And slugs creep me out a bit, so that's saying something.

ScienceDaily (May 3, 2006) See also: The new research is significant because the sea slug known as Tritonia diomedea, a nudibranch mollusc species found in the shallow northeast Pacific, is important in laboratory studies of the how the brain controls behavior, a field known as neuroethology. Biologists Russell Wyeth and Dennis Willows, of University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories, launched the study to help provide missing information on this important research animal. "Tritonia is one of the testing grounds for a lot of ideas for how nervous systems work," says Wyeth. "Field work with this organism is helpful because it gives you a good idea of how to set things up in the lab." Observations of the slug's natural behaviors and the sensory cues that trigger them also add exciting new context for scientists studying them under experimental conditions and provide information that cannot be obtained in laboratories. The study sheds light on the sea slug's navigation, feeding, mating, and egg-laying behavior, and confirms that many of this creature's behaviors in the wild are similar to published descriptions of laboratory behavior. The navigational observations are among the study's most exciting findings, not only because they are new to science, but also because they suggest that sea slugs don't just inch randomly around the sea.

      Spikers stomp Slugs
March 3, 2008 By Christina Nguyen The No. 9 Stanford men’s volleyball team added another win to its current four-game streak last Friday, bringing down Division-III’s No. 2 ranked team, UC-Santa Cruz, in three games: 30-21, 30-16, 30-21. Santa Cruz is home to some of the smaller and older gyms among west coast schools, with hard floors and poor lighting, wheeled-in bleachers and fans sitting on the floor and standing against the walls, but the Cardinal did not let that affect its play. “When you play in a small gym, even a small crowd seems like a big crowd,” said freshman Garrett Dobbs. “It did get loud, there was definitely a lot of energy, a lot of heckling. But our players did a good job of keeping cool-headed, staying consistent with playing.” Freshman outside hitter Spencer McLachlin led the team with 12 kills at an impressive .478 overall attack percentage. Junior middle blocker Brandon Williams wasn’t far behind with nine kills at a stellar .818 attack percentage, while senior outside hitter Matt Ceran and sophomore opposite Evan Romero added nine and seven kills, respectively.

    Shotgun Slugs By Chuck Hawks
The first shotgun "slugs" were probably round, lead "pumpkin balls." These were common projectiles for muskets and shotgunsany sort of smooth bore long armfor a long time. Unfortunately, the accuracy of a lead ball fired from a smooth bore barrel is pretty sad. Hitting the target is problematical and precise bullet placement is nearly impossible except at very close range. Also, a lead ball has a very poor sectional density (SD), and consequently poor penetration. There had to be a better way. The answer, of course, was the rifled barrel. Imparting spin to a projectile to stabilize its flight was a quantum improvement in accuracy. Rifled barrels also made possible the conical bullet, and later the familiar spitzer (pointed) bullets used by most hunters today. But demand remained for some sort of solid projectile that could be fired from a smoothbore gun and used on medium game like deer. Some one-gun families did not own, and could not afford to buy, a rifle. What was needed was an improvement on the lead ball, both in terms of accuracy and penetration. Foster type rifled slugs The eventual solution to this problem was the Foster "rifled" slug. This is a short, blunt lead bullet that is solid in front and hollow in the rear, analogous to a badminton bird. And, like a shuttlecock, it is its weight forward balance that allows the Foster slug to fly through the air to its target with reasonable accuracy. Compared to lead balls, this was a big improvement in both accuracy and SD.

    Slugs 'n isopods
Many slug species tend to aggregate when they are resting. That behavior is called huddling. Here is a note I had in issue No. 15 of Tentacle that was about a specimen of the native U.S. slug Philomycus carolinianus that was huddling with an introduced Arion subfuscus
I have many rocks in my backyard and almost every large rock has one or more resident slugs underneath it. Even more numerous in the same places are isopods, which appear to be more sensitive to dehydration than are slugs. On many occasions I have seen isopods clustered around resting slugs. This morning I was able to photograph 2 such clusters under one rock.
The smaller slug was probably a juvenile Limax maximus , while the larger one in the picture below is probably an Arion subfuscus
If we define huddling loosely as the clustering of animals for mutual protection against environmental extremes, then what we have here would be an example of interphylar huddling. However, the isopods are probably benefiting much more from huddling against a slug than is the slug from having isopods lined up against its body.

    http://www.naturepark.com/bslug.htm
Banana Slug Ariolimax columbianus Here's a photo peek of this native shell-less mollusk! Banana Slug are Mollusks, which means they are soft-bodied with no visible skeleton. They also belong to the class Gastropoda, which can be recognized by having a muscular foot, a mantle with a cavity, a meaty hump on their back, and a radula (or sand-paper-like grinding mouth parts). They are Pulmonates, which means they have a small lung inside their bodies which opens to the outside with a pneumostone Banana Slugs are the second largest slug in the world, growing up to 25 cm long. They are so named because very often their coloring resembles a banana, bright yellow body with black spots. Solid greenish, pale brown and even almost white specimens can be found locally too. They can change their color slightly over time, becoming more intense or paler as the light, moisture and food allows. These colors help them to camouflage with the leaves on the forest floor. They may be confused with an introduced species, the Black Garden Slug, as it is large and also comes in a brownish color. If you look closely at the Garden Slug, you can usually see an orange-striped edging around the foot and textured furrows on all upper parts of the body except the mantle. The Banana Slug does not have any orange on its body and its body is smooth. The Banana Slug lives in moist forest floors along the Pacific Coast of North America from California to Alaska. It is a decomposer, which means it chews up leaves, and animal droppings and other dead plant material and recycles it into soil. One of their favorite foods seems to be mushrooms. In the process of eating, they also spread seeds and spores.

    Slug History
The Story of the Web's Favorite Mascot.
For many years, the banana slug (ariolomax dolichophalus to the world of science) served as the unofficial mascot for the University of California at Santa Cruz campus. It represented many of the strongest elements of the campus: contemplation, flexibility, non-agressiveness and, perhaps above all, an iconoclastistic challenge toward the status quo. Besides, the Banana Slug is indigenious to the region and shares a symbiotic relationship with the California Redwood that populates the scenic campus.
In 1986 students demanded that the Slug be blessed with official mascot status. Five years previous to this, the Chancellor at the time had named the Sea Lion to this distinguished post this in an effort to make the campus more mainstream.
Well, students would have none of that. They demanded to be associated with the mollusk. They produced t-shirts bearing the Fiat Slug logo (still produced today by Oxford West) and the newly established Student Union Assembly prepared for a vote to see which mascot students prefered.
The Chancellor, in his infinite wisdom, refused to have campus money spent on the student referendum; in his mind, the issue was moot. There would be no official Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.
