Instead, it focused on improving the usage of silicon on solar panels, finding ways to make PV-cell manufacturing more cost efficient. The company, with Bob Metcalfe (Ethernet co-inventor) and MIT professor Ely Sachs (developer of "string ribbon" PV cell manufacturing process) on board, says it's developed polycrystalline silicon cellswhich are 25 percent more efficient than traditional cells. ... Jump to: navigation search Solar energy can be concentrated using a parabolic reflector to achieve very high temperatures. Solar Energy systems come in a diverse range of technologies and are largely divided up into two main categories which are solar electric and solar heating. Solar electric really covers solar photovoltaic cells used for generating electricity while solar heating systems typically are used for heating water. A further subdivision could be thought of as active and passive systems. Active systems are those which are built solely to capture solar energy whereas as passive systems are more generally design features that make use of the available solar energy. An example of the latter is building architecture.

Introduction Solar Energy , radiation produced by nuclear fusion reactions deep in the Sun’s core ( see Nuclear Energy). The Sun provides almost all the heat and light Earth receives and therefore sustains every living being. Solar energy travels to Earth through space in discrete packets of energy called photons ( see Electromagnetic Radiation). On the side of Earth facing the Sun, a square kilometer at the outer edge of our atmosphere receives 1,400 megawatts of solar power every minute, which is about the capacity of the largest electric-generating plant in Nevada. Only half of that amount, however, reaches Earth’s surface. The atmosphere and clouds absorb or scatter the other half of the incoming sunlight. The amount of light that reaches any particular point on the ground depends on the time of day, the day of the year, the amount of cloud cover, and the latitude at that point. The solar intensity varies with the time of day, peaking at solar noon and declining to a minimum at sunset. The total radiation power (1.4 kilowatts per square meter, called the solar constant) varies only slightly, about 0.2 percent every 30 years. Any substantial change would alter or end life on Earth.

Improved System for Water Desalination by Solar Energy
Researcher: Prof. Gershon Grossman,
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Technion, Israel
A novel design has been proposed for a solar still, designed to produce fresh water out of sea or brackish water. In the proposed system, the solar heat is utilized more than once through recovery of the heat of condensation in a manner somewhat similar to multi-effect desalination. Unlike in conventional designs where the moist air in the solar still is practically stagnant, the present design generates circulation of the humid air. The air absorbs the humidity in a part of the still exposed to the sun, circulates and allows the humidity to condense in another, shaded part while preheating the feed water. Heat can be stored in the feed water so as to obtain additional evaporation and condensation that can continue after sunset and at night. Several design variations are envisioned based on this principle. Work on this project has been in progress for about one year, and concentrated mainly on the design and modeling of the solar still. A simulation model has been developed which describes the essential processes taking place in the system: The heating of the feed water by solar energy on the evaporator side (both direct and indirect heating are considered); the condensation of product water on the condenser side, while preheating the entering feed water; and the circulation of humid air from the evaporator side to the condensation side to transport the water. Heat and mass transfer coefficients, which are important design parameters, have been estimated as best as possible, but will have to be actually measured in the experimental system.

A description of solar energy as renewable energy source.
http://www.envocare.co.uk/solar_energy.htm
ez_codePath = "ezmenu/" document.write(""); showPermPanel('Main', 0, 90) Solar Energy Solar is an ideal source of renewable energy. It's always there in abundance with no unwanted emissions. Introduction:
There are three main, recognised ways of producing energy directly from the sun in most parts of the world including the UK ( indirect methods such water, wind etc are discussed elsewhere, eg see the overview on the Alternative and Renewable Energy page). The first two, described as passive and active respectively, absorb the heat and store it to be used, for example, for space and water heating. The third method converts sunlight to electricity using photo-voltaic (pv) cells, a method which is flexible since electricity can be converted and used in many ways.
Additionally, there are other methods for producing energy from the the sun's direct rays (eg the production of hydrogen from water) which are more applicable to warmer regions.
The question which naturally arises in the UK is do we get enough sun to make solar energy a practical source? According to the modern view it appears that we do get sufficient, but in our changeable climate the sun's intensity varies from moment to moment, and from season to season. This implies a need for storage and for it to be used in conjunction with other energy sources, so that the necessary supply rate can be evened out.

Lithuania has a sufficient solar, wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal resources. Lithuania is situated between 54-56° of Northern Latitudes, and it is the same as UK, Southern Denmark, Southern Sweden. Global radiation has been measured at two locations in Lithuania: this is in Kaunas at 54.54 N and Silute 55.21 N, 200 and 40 km from the West coast respectively. The duration of sunshine, measured throughout eleven stations in Lithuania, depends on the distance from the sea mainly and differs by 250 hours, even the distance from the coast to the eastern border is not more, than 350 km. (see fig.1). Average yearly solar radiation on the horizontal surface is 968 kWh/m

California plans $3 billion for solar energy projects

December 13, 2005
Tuesday the California Public Utilities Commission announced an ambitious program to expand the market for solar power, proposing to provide $2.8 billion of incentives toward solar development over the next 11 years.
The plan would offer more than $3 billion in consumer rebates over the next decade and aims to install panels to produce 3,000 megawatts of solar energy on 1 million homes, businesses and public buildings. Environmentalists said the California Solar Initiative could help reduce the cost of solar energy, create jobs and reduce greenhouse gases emissions blamed for global warming.
"With rising energy prices and continued air pollution, this is exactly the kind of landmark initiative California needs," Bernadette Del Chiaro, clean energy advocate for Environment California, told the Associated Press. "From this, we're going to see cleaner air, affordable solar energy and California regaining its world leadership in solar power."
The proposed initiative follows the state's approval of a project that would put some 20,000 solar dishes in the Mohave Desert to generate 500 megawatts of electricity. A second project in the Imperial Valley, east of San Diego, is awaiting state approval. Green energy advocates hope the two large solar projects in the desert of California could boost industrial-scale development of solar technology.
