Sound Is Energy
To enjoy all of our sound files download "RealPlayer" for free from the Internet. Did you know? Horn and woodwind players kiss their instruments? Watch one, next time, and you’ll see why! The position of the player’s mouth around the reed or mouthpiece is called "embouchure" which comes from the French word "boucher" meaning "to kiss".
Energy In The Air: How Sound Is Made
CRASH! BANG! Did you hear that sound? It was made by air vibrating. The same is true for sounds made by musical instruments. The difference between NOISE and MUSIC is that musical sounds are organized into patterns that have pitch and rhythm. Noise is just random, disorganized sounds. Sounds are made and travel in the same way whether they are musical sounds or noise. A musical sound is called a tone, and is produced by air vibrating a certain number of times per second. These vibrations are called waves. These sound waves must be contained in some way so that the performer can control the loudness, quality of the tone, and how long it plays. Most musical instruments have a reed, a string, or some other device that creates sound waves when moved. Sounds are different because of harmonics , which are higher and quieter sounds mixed in. They are not heard separately, but add to the tone of the sound, making an oboe sound different from a trumpet or drum.

Sound Waves
by Ron Kurtus (revised 26 June 2005) Sound is a series of compression waves that moves through air or other materials. These sound waves are created by the vibration of some object, like a radio loudspeaker. The waves are detected when they cause a detector to vibrate. Your eardrum vibrates from sound waves to allow you to sense them. Sound has the standard characteristics of any waveform. Questions you may have include:
  • What is sound? What are the characteristics of sound? How is sound created and detected?
This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson. Useful tools: Metric-English Conversion Scientific Calculator
Sound is waveform in matter
Sound is a waveform that travels through matter. Although it is commonly associated in air, sound will readily travel through many materials such as water and steel. Some insulating materials absorb much of the sound waves, preventing the waves from penetrating the material.

Did you hear that? In this BrainPOP movie, Tim and Moby introduce you to the world of sound! In the movie, you’ll find out how sound and ocean waves are similar, yet different, as you learn about different kinds of waves. See how air molecules, air pressure, pitch, and vibration all play a part in everything you hear. Plus, you’ll be introduced to a cool mechanism designed to measure sound waves! Discover how fast sound can travel through mediums like air, water, and steel. And see how aquatic animals like whales use sound to communicate underwater! Hey, this sound movie sounds pretty cool, right?!

About UbuWeb Sound
Originally focusing on Sound Poetry proper, UbuWeb's Sound section has grown to encompass all types of sound art, historical and contemporary. Beginning with pioneers such as Guillaume Apollinaire reading his "Calligrammes" in 1913, and proceeding to current practitioners such as Vito Acconci or Kristin Oppenheim , UbuWeb Sound surveys the entire 20th century and beyond. Categories include Dadaism, Futurism, early 20th century literary experiments, musique concrete, electronic music, Fluxus, Beat sound works, minimalist and process works, performance art, plunderphonics and sampling, and digital glitch works, to name just a few. As the practices of sound art continue to evolve, categories become increasingly irrelevant, a fact UbuWeb embraces. Hence, our artists are listed alphabetically instead of categorically.
UbuWeb embraces non-proprietary, open source media. As such, most of our newer files are encoded in the more universally readable MP3 format. However, when a recording is still in print and available, we only serve it in streaming RealMedia; we don't wish to take whatever small profits might be made from those taking the efforts to gather, manufacture and properly distribute such recordings. Instead, we hope that by streaming these works, it will serve as an enticement for UbuWeb visitors to support the small labels making this work available.

Playing Sounds On The Web
Sounds can be played "inline" or by a "helper", depending on the HTML element you use.
Inline Sound
When sound is included in a web page, or as part of a web page, it is called inline sound. If you plan to use inline sounds in your web applications, be aware that many people find inline sound annoying. Also note that some users might have turned off the inline sound option in their browser. Our best advice is to include inline sound only in web pages where the user expects to hear the sound. An example of this is a page which opens after the user has clicked on a link to hear a recording.
Using A Helper (Plug-In)
A helper application is a program that can be launched by the browser to "help" playing sound. Helper applications are also called Plug-Ins. One great advantage of using a helper application is that you can let some (or all) of the player settings be controlled by the user.

Home Page Trail Trail: Sound The Java Sound API is a low-level API for effecting and controlling the input and output of sound media, including both audio and Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) data. The Java Sound API provides explicit control over the capabilities normally required for sound input and output, in a framework that promotes extensibility and flexibility. The Java Sound API fulfills the needs of a wide range of application developers. Potential application areas include:
  • Communication frameworks, such as conferencing and telephony
  • End-user content delivery systems, such as media players and music using streamed content
  • Interactive application programs, such as games and Web sites that use dynamic content
  • Content creation and editing
  • Tools, toolkits, and utilities
The Java Sound API provides the lowest level of sound support on the Java platform. It provides application programs with a great amount of control over sound operations, and it is extensible. For example, the Java Sound API supplies mechanisms for installing, accessing, and manipulating system resources such as audio mixers, MIDI synthesizers, other audio or MIDI devices, file readers and writers, and sound format converters. The Java Sound API does not include sophisticated sound editors or graphical tools, but it provides capabilities upon which such programs can be built. It emphasizes low-level control beyond that commonly expected by the end user.
