NASA's science chief resigns
It's hard to know what to make of the news that Alan Stern, NASA's top-ranking science official, and John Mather, the agency's Nobel-prize-winning chief scientist, have decided to leave their posts , but the shake-up can't be good for the agency.
Stern took the helm in April 2007, moving to NASA headquarters in Washington, DC, from a top spot at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, where he headed up NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto.
As associate administrator for science at NASA, he made headlines for trying to keep agency missions on schedule and under budget , forcing some missions to reduce pre-flight testing, for example, to stay on track.
He also instituted a policy whereby only people who already had experience leading missions got to head up new ones - the idea being that they could better anticipate problems and manage the projects.
But cost and schedule overruns seem to be entrenched at NASA. USA Today reports that

First European Cargo Spaceship Docks to International Space Station
By Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides Categories: Space At 10:35 Eastern time this morning, the first non-US/non-Russian spaceship docked to the International Space Station. The European Space Agency launched the new automated cargo transfer vehicle to resupply the European lab module that was carried up to the Space Station by the Shuttle in February. The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) can carry seven and a half tons of cargo to the station bringing needed equipment, supplies, water, fuel and gases. It can deliver three times more mass then the Progress vehicles that have been servicing the Space Station (and MIR before that) since 1986. (The ATV's will b used to augment the current Progress launch schedule).

House Democrats Plan Attack on NASA's Mars Mission
By Aaron Rowe Categories: Space Tomorrow morning, the House Committee on Science and Technology will challenge NASA's vision for space exploration. According to a document on their website, the legislators are planning to grill NASA's representatives:
  • Does the exploration architecture, as laid out by NASA, present a technically and programmatically viable approach for executing exploration beyond low Earth orbit under a pay-as-you-go strategy?

Sir Arthur C. Clarke has Died
It is with a heavy heart I write that Sir Arthur C. Clarke has died . He died early Wednesday at a hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I had the privilege to meet Sir Arthur in 1997 in Sri Lanka, his home of 52 years. His creative mind inspired many people including myself. He will be missed but his creativity will live on through the people he inspired. When I met him in 1997 it was for a variety of reason. One of them was to talk about the space elevator. He was so excited to talk about it. We met the at Colombo Swimming Club , he was just finishing up a swim and we had lunch. He was 79 at the time and his mind was as sharp as ever. When we sat down for lunch he presented me with a stack of material he had collected for me on the space elevator. I was astounded that he should do this for me. But this was the nature of Sir Arthur. He was a kind and giving man who would regale you with stories at every opportunity. I enjoyed my brief visit with him.
