SO WHAT'S IN
Sugar
How much sugar is in Energy drink? There is less than 1/2 calorie of sugar in Energy Drink. This qualifies for the government-approved statement "No Sugar". The 8 calories in Most 8 ounce energy drinks in the market today have over 100 calories from 27-30 grams of sugar, which is a simple carbohydrate. Most 12-ounce non-diet soft drinks have 170 calories from 40 grams of sugar. Most 5.5-ounce juice drinks have 80 calories from 20 grams of sugar.
Why is it important to not have sugar or carbohydrate calories in any drink? How does
drinks do use a proprietary blend of Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium (Ace K) and fruit essences to give the drinks their great flavor without sugar or empty calories. In fact the 8 calories in the drink come from the 2 grams of amino acids, which are protein calories.
Is safe for diabetics? drinks are exactly what diabetics have been looking for. With zero sugar, diabetics can safely enjoy great taste with great benefits and the extra boost of energy they need.

The Need for a Certified Athletic Trainer
by Steve Cohen, Collegiate Coordinator, East Penn RU In the EPRU, we have found that a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) at our championship and all-star events is an invaluable asset in the proper care and well being of our players. Some people may argue that an EMT and ambulance are all that is needed for being prepared. We certainly agree with the value of the having an EMT and ambulance on site, specifically in the case of an serious injury requiring hospitalization and recommend there is one there. However, the value that an ATC brings starts with his or her understanding of how to handle emergency situations that do not necessarily require prompt hospitalization, which are the majority of injuries that occur during a match. The most significant role an ATC provides is in his or her ability to recognize, evaluate and provide care for injuries. For example, from the October 2001 EPRU men's collegiate championships over three matches, the event ATC had to deal with (in consecutive order):
  • dislocated shoulder
  • laceration above the eye
  • quadriceps contusion from previous game that was not treated
  • grade 2 concussion
  • spiral fracture of the fibula
  • medial ankle sprain, tendon strain

    Supplement Use on Rise
Two new studies show an increase in drug use by student/athletes. By Staff Athletic Management, 13.6, October/November 2001, http://www.momentummedia.com/articles/am/am1306/bbsupplement.htm After a steady decrease among NCAA athletes in the early 1990s, the use of performance-enhancing substances among teenagers and college-age athletes appears to have increased recently, according to two surveys released this past summer. Both surveys, however, indicate that the increases are small and that those who use banned or questionable substances remain a small minority. The substances asked about in the surveys include both nutritional supplements and banned substances such as anabolic steroids and ephedrine.
Results regarding college athletes come from the 2001 edition of the "NCAA Study of Substance Use Habits of College Student-Athletes,"which the NCAA research staff has conducted every four years since 1985. Data about younger people comes from a random telephone survey done by The Healthy Competition Foundation, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association project.
After declining from about 4.9 percent of respondents in 1989 to 1.1 percent in 1997, the 2001 NCAA survey showed anabolic steroid use slightly increased to 1.4 percent. Amphetamine use continued to increase, from 3.1 percent in 1997 to 3.3 percent in 2001. And ephedrine use went to 3.9 percent from 3.5 percent in 1997.

XS Energy Drink - The drinks are ENERGY drinks and in order to deliver energy without loads of calories from sugar, you have to find a way to quickly deliver B-vitamins and amino acids. Caffeine is a great way to enhance performance as well as open the blood vessels so that vitamins and amino acids can quickly enter the bloodstream and give you a boost without the sugar highs and crashes. Isn't caffeine on the "Banned Substances" list used by the Olympics and NCAA college athletics? This is an important question. Many athletic organizers have heard rumors, but don't know the whole truth. Caffeine is NOT BANNED. It is listed on the "Banned Substances" list with an asterisk next to it that clarifies that it is only banned in high doses that would most likely have to be injected. WHAT HAPPENS IN A OLYMPIC DRUG TEST?
For an event test, the athletes selected for a drug test are notified immediately following the event (for example, at the end of the 400m sprint or Rugby League Grand Final). For "out of competition" testing athletes are normally notified by telephone that they will have to have a drug test done within the next 24 hours. ASDA can, however, conduct some "no notice - out of competition testing" if an International Sporting Federation requests "Out of competition" tests are normally carried out at training sessions.
The athlete will be accompanied to the drug control (an area which has been set up for the testing) by a chaperone. Chaperones are nominated by ASDA, not the sporting organization. The athlete may also be accompanied by their coach or manager.
To do a drug test an athlete must give a urine sample. Sealed drinks are provided to help the athlete go to the toilet.
