To ensure accuracy in reporting of these squid the following brief notes have been prepared. First, a simplified account of squid morphology (Fig. 1), where we detail the differences between squid and octopus; second, an introduction to size and how it has been measured (and misreported); and third, an introduction to the two species we believe that we are reporting on: Colossal Squid ( Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni ), Giant Warty Squid (Kondakovia longimana), with a comparison made to the Giant Squid ( Architeuthis dux
Frequently cited acronyms in text are: Mantle length (ML), and Total length (TL)

    squid cephalopod order
    Main
any of numerous 10-armed cephalopods (order Teuthoidea) found in both coastal and oceanic waters. Squids may be swift swimmers or part of the drifting sea life. They range in size from about 1.5 centimetres (less than inch) to more than 20 metres (more than 65 feet), including the tentacles. Squids have elongated tubular bodies and short compact heads. Two of the 10 arms have developed into long slender tentacles with expanded ends and four rows of suckers with toothed, horny rings. The body of most squids is strengthened by a feathery-shaped, internal shell composed of a horny material. Squid eyes, almost as complex as human eyes, are usually set into the sides of the head. Little is known of the life history of squids. Some attach their eggs to floating weeds and others to the ocean bottom. In some species the young resemble the adults at hatching; in others there is a planktonic larval stage. The luminescent squids bear numerous light organs, which may be for recognition and for attracting prey.

    Giant Squid Profile
The giant squid remains largely a mystery to scientists despite being the biggest invertebrate on Earth. The largest of these elusive giants ever found measured 59 feet (18 meters) in length and weighed nearly a ton (900 kg).
Giant squid, along with their cousin, the colossal squid, have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, measuring some 10 inches (25 centimeters) in diameter. These massive organs allow them to detect objects in the lightless depths where most other animals would see nothing.
Like other squid species, they have eight arms and two longer feeding tentacles that help them bring food to their beak-like mouths. Their diet likely consists of fish, shrimp, and other squid, and some suggest they might even attack and eat small whales.
They maneuver their massive bodies with fins that seem diminutive for their size. They use their funnel as a propulsion system, drawing water into the mantle, or main part of the body, and forcing it out the back.

Heck, it's not even an octopus - they have 8 arms. The USB Squid has four arms, so it's sort of more a quadropus. But it more than makes up for its name with the special function of its arms. Just plug the USB Squid into your last USB port, and now you have four USB ports. The biggest difference between the USB Squid and other USB Hubs is the USB Squid's arms can bend in any direction (so all your USB cords don't have to be coming from the same place!) Also, they have ridges on one side and the top - and indents on the bottom and other side. You can actually connect the USB ports using these ridges in many different configurations. Maybe you need 4 vertical ports or 4 horizontal or the end two free and the middle stacked or maybe a zig zag hub. The choice is yours. Let's see a real squid do that!

Archie the giant squid at the Natural History Museum. You can see it on display through an Explore tour. A monstrous giant squid goes on display at the Natural History Museum. The giant squid, Architeuthis dux is 8.62 metres long and was caught off the coast of the Falkland Islands in March 2004. Called Archie, it can be seen through the Museum's Explore tours booked in advance. Rarely seen Suckers on the tentacles of the giant squid Architeuthis dux Scientists know very little about these creatures and much of what they do know comes from the remains of dead or dying specimens, many retrieved from the stomachs of sperm whales. Archie is not the largest giant squid ever caught , that record belongs to an 18.5-metre specimen caught in Island Bay, New Zealand in 1880. Archie was caught alive and is almost complete making it a very important specimen for research. Initial investigations suggest that Archie is female although this will be confirmed by future studies.

29 Nov 2006 Residents of the coastal town of Susami in Wakayama prefecture love the sea and the post office so much that the town once installed a mailbox on the ocean floor Produced by the Susami fishing cooperative, Surumail postcards consist of dried surume squid ( Todarodes pacificus ), the local seafood specialty. The squid jerky is flattened and vacuum-packed into the shape of a postcard, and an adhesive label is included for the postage, delivery address and a short message. The postcards cost 320 yen (under $3) each and are available at the Susami post office and JR Susami station, as well as through the Susami fishing cooperative. You can also order the postcards online, but it is unclear whether they ship outside Japan.
