This article is about technical standards. For other uses, see Standard (disambiguation)

Standardization (or standardisation ) is the process of developing and agreeing upon technical standards . A standard is a document that establishes uniform engineering or technical specifications, criteria, methods, processes, or practices. Some standards are mandatory while others are voluntary. Some standards are de facto meaning a norm or requirement which has an informal but dominant status. Some standards are de jure meaning formal legal requirements. Formal standards bodies such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or the American National Standards Institute are independent of the manufacturers of the goods for which they publish standards. The goals of standardization can be to help with independence of single suppliers commodification compatibility interoperability ... repeatability , or quality In social sciences , including economics , the idea of standardization is close to the solution for a coordination problem , a situation in which all parties can realize mutual gains, but only by making mutually consistent decisions.

    Standards.gov
Standards.Gov offers background materials and useful links for locating information about the use of standards in government. Our primary focus is on federal agency use of standards for regulatory and procurement purposes.
    The NTTAA
Standards.gov supports the requirements of The National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA), which became law in March 1996. The NTTAA directs Federal agencies with respect to their use of private sector standards and conformity assessment practices. The objective is for Federal agencies to adopt private sector standards, wherever possible, in lieu of creating proprietary, non-consensus standards. The Act directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to bring together Federal agencies, as well as State and local governments, to achieve greater reliance on voluntary standards and decreased dependence on in-house standards. Progress toward accomplishing NTTAA aims is summarized in annual reports prepared by NIST, in collaboration with the Interagency Committee on Standards Policy (ICSP).

NIST plays a variety of roles in support of voluntary standardization efforts that respond to market and industry needs. We provide technical expertise and facilitate private sector agreement. In addition, NIST supports trade agreements by helping to build the underlying conformity-assessment infrastructure necessary to harmonize standards and regulatory requirements across borders. We also coordinate federal agencies' use of voluntary standards. The Illinois Learning Standards (ILS) define what all students in all Illinois public schools should know and be able to do in the seven core areas as a result of their elementary and secondary schooling. The Illinois Learning Standards have not changed since their adoption in 1997. The Performance Descriptors and ILS-aligned Classroom Assessments were developed by Illinois teachers for Illinois teachers to enhance the ILS and to serve as resources to help teachers determine local performance expectations at each grade level.
    • The ILS contain 30 goals, 98 standards and over 1,000 benchmarks. Illinois was one of the first states to develop and adopt Standards in 1997. More than 270 Illinois educators, business people, and community members developed the ILS.
