Jump to: navigation search This article is about the field of statistics. For statistics about Wikipedia , see Wikipedia:Statistics . For other uses, see Statistics (disambiguation) A graph of a normal bell curve showing statistics used in standardized testing assessment. The scales include standard deviations , cumulative percentages, percentile equivalents, Z-scores, T-scores, standard nines, and percentages in standard nines. Statistics is a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data . It is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines , from the natural and social sciences to the humanities , and to government and business. Statistical methods can be used to summarize or describe a collection of data; this is called descriptive statistics . In addition, patterns in the data may be modeled in a way that accounts for randomness and uncertainty in the observations, and then used to draw inferences about the process or population being studied; this is called inferential statistics . Both descriptive and inferential statistics comprise applied statistics . There is also a discipline called mathematical statistics , which is concerned with the theoretical basis of the subject.

What we do
Introduction
Good statistics enable everyone to look more closely, see more clearly and act more conscientiously. Improved statistics are vital to changing the world for and with children. UNICEF plays a leading role in strengthening methodologies for the measurement and assessment of key indicators related to monitoring progress toward the Millennium Development Goals, the goals of A World Fit for Children and other global commitments. UNICEF has stimulated the dialogue between users and producers of data and thereby heightened debate on the issues, contributing to intensified action on key problems affecting children and women. On these key indicators, UNICEF produces statistics globally and by country and provides a tool for generating customized statistical tables . The statistical tool includes economic and social data from 195 countries and territories, with particular reference to children’s well-being. These statistics are derived from UNICEF’s flagship publication, The State of the World’s Children 2005 More in-depth information on core indicators is also available.

Welcome to the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley!
We are a community engaged in research and education in probability and statistics . In addition to developing fundamental theory and methodology, we are actively involved in statistical problems that arise in such diverse fields as molecular biology, geophysics, astronomy, AIDS research, neurophysiology, sociology, political science, education, demography, and the U.S. Census. We have forged strong interdisciplinary links with other departments and areas of study, particularly mathematics, computer science, and biology, and actively seek to recruit graduate students and faculty who can help to build and maintain such links. We also offer a statistical consulting service each semester.
