Administration on Aging Back to Previous Statistics on the Aging Population The older populationpersons 65 years or oldernumbered 37.3 million in 2006 (the latest year for which data is available). They represented 12.4% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 20% of the population by 2030. Executions
In 2007, 42 inmates were executed, 11 fewer than in 2006. Executions, 1930-2007
  • In 2007, 42 persons in 10 States were executed 26 in Texas; 3 each in Alabama and Oklahoma; 2 each in Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee; and 1 each in South Dakota, Georgia, South Carolina, and Arizona.
    Of persons executed in 2007:
    28 were white
    14 were black
    All 42 inmates executed in 2007 were men.
    Lethal injection was used in 41 executions in 2007; 1 execution was by electrocution.
    Thirty-eight States and the Federal government in 2006 had capital statutes.
Prisoners under sentence of death The number of prisoners under sentence of death decreased for the sixth consecutive year in 2005. Prisoners on death row, 1953-2006
  • At yearend 2006, 37 States and the Federal prison system held 3,228 prisoners under sentence of death, 17 fewer than at yearend 2005.
Since the death penalty was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976, white inmates have made up more than half of the number under sentence of death.

Welcome to the Department of Statistics! The Department of Statistics at Yale University consists of 8 faculty members, 3 staff, and 29 graduate students. We offer M.A. and Ph.D. programs, as well as an undergraduate concentration in Statistics through the major in Applied Mathematics. We have active research programs in statistical information theory, statistical genetics and bioinformatics, bayesian methods, statistical computing, graphical methods, model selection, asymptotics, and other topics. Our faculty and students are also active in collaborative research with other departments throughout the university, including computer science, biological sciences, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, bioinformatics, economics and applied mathematics. We occupy the James Dwight Dana House, which is listed as a National Historic Landmark and carries the Landmark Plaque of the New Haven Preservation Trust. In addition to office and classroom spaces, the Dana House is home to a computing laboratory for use by our faculty and students.
