Severe thunderstorms feature heavy rain, intense lightning, strong gusty winds, hail, and, sometimes, tornadoes. Among the most violent of all weather events, severe thunderstorms strike fiercely and quickly. Severe thunderstorms are especially dangerous because they can produce tornadoes.
More about Severe Thunderstorms On a RADAR reflectivity image, meteorologists detect severe thunderstorms using the intensity color key. The shape and size of a severe thunderstorm may look the same as a less dangerous storm, but the intensity colors immediately indicate the severity.

Sounds of thunder rolling in the mountains here on Tuesday The creek in the secret garden started to flow again.. The sky cleared again by early evening, but by 8pm, the storms and rain started again. All in all, we received almost 3 inches of much needed rain in less than 24 hours. The creeks are full again (for now), and we even had some minor flooding in our area.
Bonnie hid in a basket behind a chair on the porch during the worst part of the storm. I took her inside after taking this photo. Click to enlarge. Click any photo to enlarge. More photos of the creeks and waterfall tomorrow.

Home Thunderstorms Tornadoes Glossary ... Weather Maps Thunderstorms What is a thunderstorm? A thunderstorm is a weather pattern that includes thunder, lightning, and usually rain or hail. It can lead to tornadoes The basic need for thunderstorms is warm, moist air, so they happen most often in the tropical areas. Over land, thunderstorms strike more often in the afternoon and early evening since the ground heats up from the sun during the day. They occur more frequently on hot summer days than in cold weather. Causes of Thunderstorms
  • Moist air, heated by the sun, rises which causes an updraft of air.
  • As warm air rises, water in the air forms clouds.
  • When water vapor in the cloud gets too heavy, it falls as rain.
  • Conflict between the warm updraft of air and cool water in the clouds causes thunder and lightning.
  • The severity of the thunderstorm depends on the difference in temperature.
What causes lightning? What causes thunder? In a cloud, swift air separates water droplets, causing electrical charges.

Severe Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms are the most common summer storm in Stearns County, occurring primarily in the months of May through August. Thunderstorms are always accompanied by lightning, and often have strong wind gusts and heavy rain. They can generate hail and tornadoes. Lightning may pose the greatest threat due to its frequency and damage caused. Since 1959, nearly sixty Minnesotans have died as a result of lightning, and many more have been seriously injured. Thunderstorms can also be classified as windstorms when they produce wind gusts in excess of 58 miles per hour. Winds up to 130 mph have been reported in the strongest thunderstorms. Downbursts and straight-line winds can cause major structural and tree damage across a large area. Hail is precipitation in the form of balls or clumps of ice. Hail storms occur when freezing water in storm clouds accumulates in layers around an icy core. Wind and hail can batter crops, structures and transportation systems. In Minnesota, most hail is not large enough to cause significant crop or property damage.

August 11, 1979 Arctic Thunderstorms
Article #325 by T. Neil Davis This column is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. T. Neil Davis is a seismologist at the institute. The history of thunderstorms observed in the high arctic reads like that of great auroras at low latitudeit dates back many years, but the number of events is not large. Part of the historical sparseness of observed thunderstorms in the Arctic Ocean and on surrounding shores is due simply to the lack of people to observe the thunderstorms. But mainly, thunderstorms are rare in arctic regions because the conditions necessary for formation of the tall clouds are lacking. A warm earth surface, irregular terrain and plenty of moisture in the middle atmosphere contribute to the formation of strong updrafts and the associated condensation of moisture at high altitudes involved in the development of thunderstorms. Looking into thunderstorm history, Mr. Arne Hanson of the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory at Barrow, Alaska, has uncovered an observation of an arctic thunderstorm made in 1580. A manuscript Hanson has prepared contains a quotation written aboard a ship sailing the Kara Sea, north of Siberia: "... the wince with a showre and thunder came to the Southwest and then wee ranne East Northeast."

The rare storms - a sign of recent turmoil on the planet - are helping scientists deduce what lies hidden beneath the clouds that shroud the solar system's largest planet. The Hubble Space Telescope captured the first of the two clouds by chance just as it was forming on 25 March 2007. A second, very similar cloud appeared just 9 hours later in an image taken by a team of amateur astronomers from the ground.

Don't Get Zapped By Your High Tech Gadgets
Summer is thunder and lightning season. We know the ususal safety precautions of avoiding water, open spaces, and high ground. We know not to stand near trees or under canopies. We are also supposed to avoid metal objects. But how many of you are aware of your metal appendages like the cell phone, headset, blackberry, etc. ?
There was a recent report from London about a 15 year old girl who was struck by lightning while using her phone. While these incidences are rare they serve as a reminder to exercise caution.
When you see lightning or hear thunder even with out the lightning you should turn off your gadgets and keep them away from your skin. Seek shelter in a solid building or in a car with closed windows. If lightning has hit near you and you are unable to find shelter, then it is advised to crouch down with your feet close together and keep a distance of 15 feet from other people . If you feel your skin tingling or your hair standing, lightning is about to strike you.

a violent, short-lived weather disturbance that is almost always associated with lightning, thunder, dense clouds, heavy rain or hail, and strong, gusty winds. Thunderstorms arise when layers of warm, moist air rise in a large, swift updraft to cooler regions of the atmosphere. There the moisture contained in the updraft condenses to form towering cumulonimbus clouds and, eventually, precipitation. Columns of cooled air then sink earthward, striking the ground with strong downdrafts and horizontal winds. At the same time, electrical charges accumulate on cloud particles (water droplets and ice). Lightning discharges occur when the accumulated electric charge becomes sufficiently large. Lightning heats the air it passes through so intensely and quickly that shock waves are produced; these shock waves are heard as claps and rolls of thunder. On occasion, severe thunderstorms are accompanied by swirling vortices of air that become concentrated and powerful enough to form tornadoes This article covers two major aspects of thunderstorms: their meteorology (i.e., their formation, structure, and distribution) and their electrification (i.e., the generation of lightning and thunder). For separate coverage of related phenomena not covered in this article, see

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM DEFINITION
A severe thunderstorm as defined by the National Weather Service is a storm with hail = or > than 3/4" in diameter or convective wind gusts = or > than 58 mph. Even if a storm is not severe, it still remains a potential killer. Lightning, flash flooding, wind blown hail (even small hail), and general thunderstorm wind gusts pose a threat to life and / or property. Severe thunderstorms also have the potential of producing a tornado with little or no advanced tornado warning.
NOAA WATCH AND WARNING DEFINITIONS
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH- The conditions are favorable for the development of thunderstorms that will contain hail = or > than 3/4" in diameter or convective wind gusts = or > than 58 mph. Severe thunderstorms are also capable of producing a tornado
TORNADO WATCH- The conditions are favorable for the development of tornadic storms
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING- A severe thunderstorm has been spotted by a valid storm spotter or there is strong evidence from radar data that a severe thunderstorm is occurring
TORNADO WARNING- A tornado has been spotted by a valid storm spotter or there is strong evidence from radar data that a tornado is occurring SPECIAL STATEMENTS- A special statement may be issued if a thunderstorm has characteristics that pose a danger to the public (even if the storm is not officially severe). Special weather statements could be issued for vivid cloud-to-ground lightning and localized flooding. With respect to loss of human life, flash flooding along with lightning are the two greatest killers
