Environmental Toxicology: Linking Human Health, Microbiology and the Environment The Environmental Toxicology program at U.C. Santa Cruz seeks to understand environmental poisons and pathogens that harm humans and other living things. Working within the highly collaborative environment of U.C. Santa Cruz, we use a systems-based approach in research and graduate training, seeking to understand the broad principles of toxicity and pathogenicity. Our faculty members are leaders in their disciplines and welcome collaborators throughout campus and beyond. Virtually all faculty are engaged in interdepartmental efforts. Chief among our partners are bioinformaticists, chemists, microbiologists, and earth and ocean scientists. Our educational program We are small department with a huge appetite for technology , which has led our faculty members to spearhead the acquisition of funding for major instrumentation facilities. Welcome
The Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology (BEST) is the National Academies' principal study unit for environmental pollution problems affecting human health, human impacts on the environment, and the assessment and management of related risks to human health and the environment. BEST addresses questions about air and water pollution; solid and hazardous waste; toxicology; epidemiology; risk assessment; applied ecology; natural resources; and environmental engineering, economics, law, and policy. The breadth and multidisciplinary character of BEST's program is reflected in the board's diverse membership, as well as its broad constituency of government and private sponsors. The oversight of BEST's program is provided by the National Research Council's Division on Earth and Life Studies.

    FROM THE CHAIR:
Welcome to the WEB site for the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah, which is located in Salt Lake City at the foot of the beautiful Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. Pharmacology and Toxicology are integrative and interdisciplinary sciences that investigate the actions of chemical agents on living systems. These chemical agents can include endogenous molecules, such as hormones and neurotransmitters, materials in the environment that can produce adverse effects, as well as synthetic and naturally derived drugs that can treat human disease. Pharmacologists and Toxicologists have an exceptionally broad perspective and investigate virtually every organ system from the molecular to whole organism level. The mission of our Department is three-fold, and focuses on

METC promotes research at UW-Madison and the UW System that addresses fundamental mechanisms through which toxicants produce adverse effects; provides ways to assess or predict the impact of these agents on humans and other species; develops biological and physicochemical processes that can control releases or deplete the environment of these harmful agents. Programs of the METC are supported in part by grants T32 ES07015 and T35 ES07295 from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

These hazardous substances are ranked based on frequency of occurrence at NPL sites, toxicity, and potential for human exposure. Toxicological profiles are developed from a priority list of 275 substances. ATSDR also prepares toxicological profiles for the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Energy (DOE) on substances related to federal sites. So far, 296 toxicological profiles have been published or are under development as “finals” or “drafts for public comment”; 281 profiles were published as finals; 130 profiles have been updated. Currently, 7 profiles are being revised based on public comments received.. These profiles cover more than 250 substances.
