UNC Ultrasound/Medical Augmented Reality Research
Augmented Reality Technology
Overview
Our research group is working to develop and operate a system that allows a physician to see directly inside a patient, using augmented reality (AR). AR combines computer graphics with images of the real world. This project uses ultrasound echography imaging, laparoscopic range imaging, a video see-through head-mounted display (HMD), and a high-performance graphics computer to create live images that combine computer-generated imagery with the live video image of a patient. An AR system displaying live ultrasound data or laparoscopic range data in real time and properly registered to the part of the patient that is being scanned could be a powerful and intuitive tool that could be used to assist and to guide the physician during various types of ultrasound-guided and laparoscopic procedures.
Head Mounted Display Research
Head mounted displays (HMDs) with appropriate characteristics for augmented reality are not commercially available. We have put a significant effort into modifying existing HMDs and building our own HMDs for use in our augmented reality projects.

Ultrasound Imaging (US) Format for Printing Why is Ultrasound Done? Ultrasound imaging (also called ultrasound scanning or sonography) is a relatively inexpensive, fast and radiation-free imaging modality. Ultrasound is excellent for non-invasively imaging and diagnosing a number of organs and conditions, without x-ray radiation. Modern obstetric medicine (for guiding pregnancy and child birth) relies heavily on ultrasound to provide detailed images of the fetus and uterus. Ultrasound can show fetal development, and bodily function like breathing, urination, and movement. Ultrasound is also extensively used for evaluating the kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart, and blood vessels of the neck and abdomen. Ultrasound can also be used to guide fine needle, tissue biopsy to facilitate sampling cells from an organ for lab testing (for example, to test for cancerous tissue). Ultrasound imaging and ultrasound angiography are finding a greater role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of

Medical Assistant Training Schools CALL TOLL FREE: 800-927-1239 Medical Assistant Schools Medical Career Programs Locations Start your career with the medical assistant training needed to secure your future! Ultrasound Technician Schools U ltrasound diagnostic digital imaging is one of the fastest emerging fields in the healthcare industry. Ultrasound technician schools are turning out well-trained students who are up-to-date with the most current sonography technologies. As a result, there is a very high demand for their unique experience sand skills. Ultrasound therapy is fast becoming the diagnostic method of choice in many areas of medicine, leaving healthcare institutions competing amongst themselves for the most qualified sonographers who are educated at the leading ultrasound technician training schools.
Sonogram Technicians use an instrument called a transducer to transmit high frequency sound waves through the body of the patient. As the sound waves bounce off the targeted body part or organ, their echoes are captured by specialized equipment that converts them into visual images. The internal images are then examined by a trained and credentialed diagnostic physician via digital imaging. Ultrasound is perhaps most often associated with pregnancies, but now diagnostic medical sonography is used to scan everything from the nervous system to the digestive system, blood vessels, tumors, the eyes and more. Health care professionals often prefer ultrasound to other diagnostic scanning techniques (such as radiographic technology, or x-rays) due to the safety of this non-invasive technology and its ability to capture such detailed images.

    • [Printer-friendly format] U ltrasound creates pictures of the internal organs of the body from sound waves. It is used to help find possible problems or to check a medical condition. During pregnancy, it can be used to examine the fetus . This pamphlet will explain:
      • What ultrasound is and how it works
      • When women—pregnant or not—might have an ultrasound
      • Types of ultrasound
Ultrasound is used to look for problems that may occur or to check on the progress of your pregnancy. It can be a useful tool, especially when used with other tests and exams. About Ultrasound Ultrasound is energy in the form of sound waves. There is no radiation involved. The sound waves are directed into a specific area of the body through a transducer The images appear on a screen similar to a television. Dark areas show liquid, like amniotic fluid . Gray or light areas show denser material, like tissue or bone. The type of ultrasound that is used most often combines still pictures to show movement, like the single frames that make a movie. This is called real-time ultrasound.
